Lunch will beserved at noon.Combined campaign officials fromthe state office will be on hand to sharetips and helpful suggestions for thesolicitors as they work with departmentand offices. Representatives from the10 agencies that received the mostfunding from Western’s campaign lastyear will be on hand to share howWestern’s donations were used and hearabout potential future needs.The Combined Campaign beginson October 1 and runs throughNovember 14 with a goal of raising 29,000. “We're looking forward tohaving some fun with this year’s StateEmployee's Combined Campaign, pluswe know it's a great opportunity to helpour community and state because stateemployees make a great state evenbetter,” said Web manager Bob Orr,chairman of Western’s campaign.The September 18 event will featuredoor prizes and gifts for the solicitors.

The boxes contain specializedradios that transmit directly over Western’s policeradio frequency to officers on patrol and aredesigned to provide quick response to anyone inneed of police assistance. The 48,000 cost of theproject was financed through a traffic fundsupported by campus vehicle registration fees.“While we receive very few emergency calls on theboxes, we do receive several calls a week frompeople who need assistance or directions or whoneed to report accidents. Five New Members Join Western's BoardThe president of Western North Carolina’s largest healthcare system, the head of one of the world’s leading furnituremanufacturing companies, an Asheville attorney, the mayorof Asheville, and an economic development executive arethe five newest members of the Western Carolina Universityboard of trustees.They are Robert Burgin, president and chief executiveofficer of Mission-St. Joseph’s Health Systems in Asheville;Gerald L. Kiser, president, chief executive officer anddirector of La-Z-Boy Inc. in Monroe, Michigan; SteveWiganarren, a partner in the Asheville law firm of Long,Parker, Warren & Jones; Charles Worley, Asheville mayor,attorney and part owner of Highland Farms RetirementCommunity in Black Mountain; and Rosemary Foley Wyche,a vice president with North Carolina Citizens for Businessand Industry in Raleigh.Burgin, Kiser, Warren and Worley were appointed toWestern’s board by The University of North CarolinaBoard of Governors. Wyche was appointed by GovernorMike Easley. All will serve four-year terms scheduled toexpire June 30, 2007.Raleigh entrepreneur and former U.S. AmbassadorJeanette Hyde was re-appointed by Easley to a second fouryear term.
