Secondly, and best of all, you can always look up therules when they do come into play. There is no need foryou to memorize anything.ADVENTURE GAMEChapter One:Welcome, Warrior!Welcome to the Warriors Adventure Game!In this game, you and your friends will create catcharacters of your own and lead them through excitingadventures. Along the way, your characters may bumpinto familiar faces, and visit some of the same places asthe warrior cats. You’ll also meet new characters andexperience adventures no warrior cat has ever dreamed of.What’s more, you won’t just read about these situations;you will control what your characters do and how theproblems they face get resolved. In an adventure game, you and your friends each willcreate a character in a story—in this case, cats from thewarrior Clans. Your cats will find themselves involvedin adventures and mysteries, just like the characters inthe novels. At its heart the Warriors Adventure Game is a kindof group storytelling event. As a group, you and yourfriends will create tales about your cats’ adventures. Youget to decide what your character thinks and says anddoes based on what his or her individual goals are. Whileyou’ll keep track of different scores, the game itselfmostly involves talking about and imagining what yourcat characters would do in certain situations. Are There Rules?Like any game, this one has rules. Some of them arerules about how to create your cat, while others are abouthow to tell whether or not your cat is successful at thethings he or she tries to do.At first glance it might seem as if there are an awfullot of rules—so many that it may be a bit intimidating.Don’t worry. First of all, you don’t have to learn everyrule to play. There are just a few basic rules that you’llneed during most of the game. The rest of them will onlycome up in certain situations.Who Wins? There are no winners and losers in the WarriorsAdventure Game. The goal is not to win or beat the otherplayers; the goal is to have a good time playing and tosuccessfully complete each adventure. In fact, you can consider Rule #1 to be:Having fun is more important than following therules as written. That’s not to say that you should just throw out theserules. They have been designed to help make the gamemore fun for everyone involved. However, becausea storytelling game has almost limitless possibilities, there may be times where following the rules leads toconfusion or even arguments. At those times rememberRule #1.As long as everyone playing the game is having fun, then you’re definitely doing it right. What You’ll NeedThe best way to learn the Warriors Adventure Game isto jump right in and make a cat character for yourself. It will get you familiar with the rules and will teach youa lot about what the game will be like. In order to do thatand begin playing, you’ll need the following things. These Rules: Since you’re reading this sentence, you’vealready got your first need covered.Paper and Pencil: Making your cat character isreally just a matter of making a few simple choices andjotting down the results. But as you’re creating your catfor the first time, you might also want to write downquestions as they occur to you. Most of them will beanswered as you go through the character creationprocess; but if you write them down, you and yourfriends can sort them out later. It’s also handy to keepa paper and pencil around while you’re playing. As thestory unfolds, you may want to jot down importantinformation or make other notes to yourself.www.warriorcats.comPermission to reproduce and distribute this page granted by the copyright holder, Working Partners. All rights reserved. What Is an Adventure Game? The Warriors Adventure Game is a cooperative game. You and your friends work together to tell your characters’tales. Storytelling is the most basic action in this game, and the only thing you ever really need to know is theanswer to one simple question: What would your catdo next?1

Character Sheet: A character sheet is a page designed tohold all the information you’ll need about your characterduring the course of play. Chapters Two and Three willwalk you through the process of making a character.Download and print one out at www.warriorcats.comor make a copy of someone else’s. When you’re finishedcreating your cat, all the information you’ll need to playwill be on that one sheet. That’s It for Now: Eventually, you’ll need a few moreitems—in particular, you’ll need three different kindsof chips (colored stones, coins, etc.)—but not until youstart playing the game. During the game you may alsofind it useful to keep a map of the Lake region handyso you can track where your cats are going. A full-colorcopy of the map has been specially made for the game(you can find it on the reverse side of the jacket forOmen of the Stars #1: The Fourth Apprentice, or as adownload on warriorcats.com). For now, though, aslong as you have the items listed above, you’re ready tocreate a cat. Before you go to the next chapter and startcreating your cat, let’s take a quick look at what theend result will be—an apprentice cat’s character sheet.Below is the character sheet for a cat that we’ve created:Muddypaw, a young apprentice from WindClan. You’lllearn more about Muddypaw as we go along throughthese rules, and we’ll watch him develop at the sametime your cat does.MuddypawAlthough Muddypaw wants to help his Clan, fighting makes him nervous. He’s physically small, but he’s very clever and makes friends easily.Cat’s Name:MuddypawPlayer’s Name:like,If you’dicturedraw a pnacuoygineyou imasatacof yourictureere’s a pHr.ehre’llhim ohe cat wt,wapye goof Muddith as wwginybe plas.the rulethroughWindClanClan:ADVENTURE GAMEBrown tabbyCat’s Color:Cat’s s 1 2Arch (Strength)Jump (Spirit)Bite (Strength)Listen (Spirit)Smell (Intelligence)Climb (Strength)Ponder (Intelligence)Focus (Spirit)Pounce (Intelligence)Swim (Strength)Hiss (Spirit)See (Intelligence)Wrestle (Strength)Sneak (Spirit) 1Swat (Intelligence)KnacksUse the back of this sheet to draw a picture of your s Adventure Game created by Stan! www.storytimewithstan.com Art by James L. The whole premise ofthe Warriors Adventure Game is that you and your friendsare able to imagine your cats, their personalities, and theworld around them. What Makes a Warrior?

How the Game WorksWhile Muddypaw’s character sheet does not have anoverwhelming amount of information, it still can look alittle confusing. What do all those numbers mean? Beforewe go any further, let’s take a quick look at how thosenumbers will be used in play. This will give you a basicidea of what playing the Warriors Adventure Game willbe like.In this example, Erica and Bill are playing a shortsession of the Warriors Adventure Game. Bill is theNarrator, and he has an adventure printed out andsitting in front of him on the table. Erica is playing. Hercharacter is Muddypaw, so she has the character sheetyou just saw printed out and sitting in front of her. Shealso has one red chip, two blue chips, and two greenchips. These chips are based on Muddypaw’s Abilityscores: the red chip is for the one Strength point, bluefor Intelligence, and green for Spirit. (When you play, the chips can be any colors you like as long as they areeasy to tell apart.)Bill: With a See Check of 2, you don’t noticeanything.Erica: How about if I try to hear the voles scurryingaround?Bill: That’s a good idea. Make a Listen Check.Erica: Listen is also based on Spirit, but I AM trainedin it. In fact, Muddypaw gets 2 to ListenChecks because he’s from WindClan, so mytotal is 4. But I really want to listen hard, soI’m going to spend one of my green chips toget a bonus point.Erica takes a green chip and sets it aside.Erica: That gives me 1 bonus point, so my total is 5.Bill: Great! With a 5 you definitely hear the voles. They’re scurrying all around here, and you cantell that one is right near you!Erica: I want to get it!Bill: Muddypaw’s training assignment today is to goout alone and catch some fresh-kill for the Clan.So where do you go after you leave the WindClancamp?Bill:Erica: I’m not sure. Where would be a good place tohunt?Erica: Oh. Muddypaw’s Strength is only 1, and he’s nottrained in Bite.Bill: To figure that out, you’ll have to make a PonderCheck.Bill: Sorry, a 1 isn’t good enough. You miss and thevole scurries away. But you hear another onenearby.Bill:Right.Erica: Well, I’m hunting, so I want to chomp on it.Bill: Doing that requires a Bite Check. That’s based onStrength.Erica: Th is time I’m going to get it. I’m going to spendmy Strength chip.Erica: Okay. Muddypaw has a score of 2 in Intelligence.Erica takes the red chip and sets it aside.Bill:Erica: That gives me 1 bonus point to my StrengthCheck, so the total is now 2.And is he trained in the Ponder Skill?Erica: Yeah. He has a 1 in Ponder. So 2 plus 1 is 3.Bill: So you have a Ponder Check of 3.Bill looks at the adventure to see what that result means.Bill: Okay, you remember a spot where there are a lotof vole burrows.Erica: Voles? They’re easy to catch! Muddypaw is goingthere!Bill: Okay. You get there. Now make a See Check tofind out if you can see any voles running around.Erica: That’s also based on Intelligence, but I don’thave any training in the See Skill. So I just get a2 from my Intelligence score.Bill: That’s still not very high, but it’s enough to get thevole. Now figure out how much damage you do.Erica: Okay, Muddypaw’s Strength is 1, so he’s onlygoing to do 1 point of damage . . . but I do get anextra 1 because he’s biting. That’s a total of 2.Bill:More than enough to kill a vole.Erica: Great! I can’t wait to add my vole to the fresh-killpile!Permission to reproduce and distribute this page granted by the copyright holder, Working Partners. What are yougoing to do now?Erica: Hunt some more, of course!www.warriorcats.com3

As the game continues, Bill will use the adventure todescribe more things that happen to Muddypaw, andErica will continue to tell him how her cat reacts. That’spretty much how every session of the Warriors AdventureGame will go, except that you’ll be playing with agroup of friends who each have a cat character, and you’llall be making the decisions together. The adventuresyour cats go on will be more detailed than just huntingfor voles, but the basics of the game will remain thesame.Just the BeginningNow that you know what a character sheet in theWarriors Adventure Game looks like and have a basic ideaof how the game mechanics work, it’s time for you tobegin creating your own cat character.Chapter Three will allow you to give your catthe full advantage of warrior training and you will beginto decide what aspects of the warrior’s life are mostimportant to him or her—that will put the finishingtouches on your character sheet. In Chapter Seven you will find character sheets for afew of the important cats from the Warriors books, andChapter Eight has a mini-adventure so that you andyour friends can jump right in and begin playing thegame. If you are anxious to start playing right away, you and your friends can each select a character fromChapter Seven and use him or her to play the adventurein Chapter Eight, then create your own cat charactersafterward. But we recommend taking the time to createyour own cat first. It’s a fun process, and it will help youunderstand the game better.Permission to reproduce and distribute this page granted by the copyright holder, Working Partners. All rights reserved. In Chapter Two you will pull together the basicinformation that defines your cat as he or she starts downthe road to being a warrior. You will create your cat asan apprentice just entering training. Whenyou’re done with this first part of creating yourcat, you’ll have a character that is in the samestage of life as Muddypaw.4www.warriorcats.com

Chapter Two:Creating Your CatEvery cat, from the strongest warrior to the mostspoiled kittypet, begins his or her Clan training as anapprentice. The same is true for your character in theWarriors Adventure Game, so your first step will beto figure out what your cat is like at the beginning ofhis or her training.Part of this creation process is pure imagination. You get to picture what kind of cat your character is atheart: What things does he love? What does she hopeto achieve for herself and her Clan? What makes himlose his temper? What’s her favorite thing to do on asunny summer afternoon? With those ideas in mind, you will make a few simplechoices and create the core of your game character. In Chapter Three you will build on that core characteras your apprentice graduates to being a full-fledgedwarrior. This is still just the beginning of his or herlife story, though. As you play through adventures, your cat will continue to grow and improve.Who Are You?The apprentice you’re creating will be your alter egoin the adventures you’re about to undertake, so it’simportant that you understand him or her inside andout. Begin by thinking about the following questions. You don’t need firm answers to them all, but havinggeneral ideas about them will help you make some ofthe decisions you’ll have to make during this charactercreation process and during the course of play. Theywill help you understand who your cat is, what he orshe thinks is important, and what he or she will doin stressful situations. You don’t have to write down the answers. They arenot important to the game except that they will helpyou to understand who your cat is. Just remember tothink about these questions from the apprentice’sperspective, not your own real-world point of view. W hich is more important, being strong or smart? W hen out on patrol, would you rather be alone inthe front or part of the main group? Doyou enjoy listening to the elders tell storiesabout what happened many moons ago?You can download blank character sheets from thewarriorcats.com website. If you can, print one out nowand keep it handy as you go through the next fewchapters. If not, don’t worry. You can write down all ofthis information in a notebook or on a piece of scrappaper, then transfer the results to a character sheet later.Start by TalkingThere are many different types of cats in theWarriors books, with a wide variety of personalitiesand goals. Just imagine how boring the storieswould be if every cat had exactly the same skills, abilities, problems, and dreams. It is the mix ofbravery, fear, hope, strength, weakness, ambition, and a thousand other emotions, goals, andmotivations that make the Warriors world soengaging. The same will be true in the Warriors AdventureGame. It may be a good idea to sit down with the W hichis more important, to know how to dosomething or to understand why it should be done? Ifyou saw a rogue cat in your territory, wouldyou chase it off yourself or go tell the rest of theClan?other people with whom you’ll be playing thegame and talk about what kinds of cats you allhope to build. If everyone builds a nearly identicalcharacter, the game will be a little boring andprobably too competitive. Players may feel theneed to prove that their cat is the best of the lot.And if the cats come across a problem that none ofthem is well suited to deal with, how will the groupsucceed? On the other hand, if the characters have a fairlywide array of Skills and Abilities, and a healthy mixof outlooks on life, the group will be much better ableto handle a variety of different stories and situations.www.warriorcats.comPermission to reproduce and distribute this page granted by the copyright holder, Working Partners. All rights reserved. Wouldyou rather be the Clan’s deputy or itsmedicine cat?Character Sheet5

Is a sharp sense of smell more important for huntingor for knowing when an enemy is near? Wouldyou rather be a good climber or a goodswimmer? W hich is worse, being hungry or being cold? Does StarClan ever send you dreams? If an enemy was attacking your camp, would yourather be defending the main entrance or guardingthe weak sections of the walls? W hich is scarier, a dog or a snake? At this point you should have a fairly strong idea ofwho your cat is and what kind of warrior he or she hopesto grow up to be. In just one or two sentences, write downa basic description of your cat’s personality and goals.Permission to reproduce and distribute this page granted by the copyright holder, Working Partners. All rights reserved. For example: Muddypaw is quiet and a little shy, buthe’s fiercely loyal to his friends and his Clan. Fightingmakes him nervous, and he hopes to one day become a greatmedicine cat.Once you are satisfied with your description, it’s timeto choose a Clan and decide your cat’s Ability scores.Choosing a ClanAs anyone who has read the Warriors novels knows, cats don’t choose their Clans—they’re born into them. But things are a little more forgiving in the WarriorsAdventure Game. You get to choose which Clan yourapprentice belongs to, and your decision will be one ofthe first things other players look to when assessing yourcat and deciding how to approach him or her.Chances are, you already know a good deal aboutthe four Clans that live around the Lake, but a basicdescription of each is provided below. First, though, let’s talk about a few points you may want to considerbefore selecting your cat’s Clan.Other PlayersThe Warriors Adventure Game is a cooperativeexperience. It might be a good idea to sit down andtalk to the other players about their expectations forwhat the game will be like. If everyone else wants tobe members of a single Clan, then it might be difficult ifyou decide to play a cat that is antagonistic towardthat Clan.Even if everyone wants to play cats from different Clans, there may be some tension. What if half of the playerswant their cats to be open and cooperative withother Clans, but the other half want to be suspiciousand aggressive?6Remember, It’s Just a GameA lot is said in this chapter about the importanceof personalizing your character, understandingwho he or she is, and creating a strong mentalbond with him or her. This is to help you get intothe spirit of role-playing your character, butremember: when all is said and done, this is only agame and the apprentice you are creating is not real.Just as in the Warriors novels, a lot of bad things canhappen to your character during the course of hisor her adventures. He or she can become woundedor worse, but it’s all part of the game.Nothing that happens in the Warriors AdventureGame is any more real than your imagination.None of these problems is insurmountable, but it isimportant for the group to get together and talk aboutthem before the game begins, and preferably beforecharacters are created.Other CharactersOnce you have an idea how the other players feel aboutthe different Clans, you may want to look at things fromthose characters’ perspective. If one of the other cats has a dark history with acertain Clan—perhaps having had a relative killed ina battle or having been bullied by members of the Clanat some point—it will make relationships within thegroup more difficult if your cat comes from that Clan.Of course, just as this sort of thing can make for goodstories, it can also make for good storytelling games. However, you should be clear about that sort of thingbefore starting play.Clan HistoryRemember that all of the players will probably be justas familiar with the world of the Warriors novels as youare—perhaps even more so. They will enter the gamewith ideas about what it means to come from each ofthe Clans, and those ideas will probably be shared bymost of the people in the game.Sometimes it’s fun to imagine a character that goes“against type,” for example, a member of ThunderClanwho is greedy, covetous, and antagonistic toward thewww.warriorcats.com

other Clans. However, you should rememberthat the other players will probably expect yourcharacter to fit the usual image of his or her Clan. And ifyou intend to make your character something different, you should let the other players know right away so thereis no confusion.Personal StorylineEven within the most close-knit Clan, individual catshave a wide variety of goals and aspirations. However,in the world of the Warriors novels, the Clan almostalways comes first. Bear that in mind, particularly if yourcat and any of the other characters are from the sameClan. The other players will expect your cat to remaintrue to the warrior code, and you should expect no lessfrom them.ThunderClanWhile Thunderclan cats believe strongly in living upto both the letter and the intent of the warrior code, theyalso are not afraid to challenge traditions and laws thatseem unfair. ThunderClan is most interested in seeingthat all cats are treated with justice and respect. Some Clans interpret ThunderClan’s willingness tocompromise as a weakness. They believe that the Clanspends so much time talking about “fairness” because theylack the strength to protect themselves from aggressors. But the members of ThunderClan are more than readyto back up their beliefs with tooth and claw if necessary.ThunderClan BonusAny cat that is a member of ThunderClan automaticallyhas 1 level of training in the Ponder Skill. (Skills will beexplained in detail later in this chapter.) When it is time topick Skills, you may make one of your choices to increasethe value of your Ponder Skill from 1 to 2.RiverClanEach Clan has many impressive qualities, but membersof RiverClan are especially proud of their Clan and itshistory. Cats in this Clan tend to be sleek and have long, glossy coats.RiverClan cats are fiercely self-sufficient. Because oftheir close ties to the water, RiverClan cats are usuallySome other Clans think that RiverClan is a littletoo proud, and that makes it more difficult for them toweather hard times. But the members of RiverClan saythat they only do what every other Clan does—use anymeans necessary to keep themselves strong and healthy.RiverClan BonusAny cat that is a member of RiverClan automaticallyhas 1 level of training in the Swim Skill. When it is timeto pick Skills, you may make one of your choices toincrease the value of your Swim Skill from 1 to 2.WindClanEvery Clan suffers through difficult times occasionally, but WindClan has a more troubled history than most. These cats are the most susceptible to extremes ofweather and incursions by animals, Twolegs, and evenother cats. But in the end they always come back toreclaim what is theirs.Cats in WindClan must be quick and have extra-sharpsenses (particularly hearing) in order to successfullyhunt on the open moor. As a result, they are especiallydifficult to take by surprise. Some other Clans interpret WindClan’s history ofcoming and going as indicating that these cats arecowardly—running away from threats rather thanfacing them. They think that living on a barren plainhas made them soft, weak, and unfit to be calledwarriors. But the cats of WindClan will point outthat there is no honor to be gained from unnecessaryfighting. And no one has ever succeeded in permanentlytaking territory away from their Clan.WindClan BonusAny cat that is a member of WindClan automaticallyhas 1 level of training in the Listen Skill. When it is timeto pick Skills, you may make one of your choices toincrease the value of your Listen Skill from 1 to 2.ShadowClanAll of the Clans value their privacy, but none moreso than ShadowClan. Members pride themselves onbeing the most aggressive and battle-hardened Clancats, always ready for a fight and never needing to bowtheir heads or give concessions to anyone. Living in thewildest of territories, they believe that survival of thefittest is a basic part of the warrior code. If a Clancannot defend its territory against invasion, thenthat Clan doesn’t deserve that land after all.www.warriorcats.comPermission to reproduce and distribute this page granted by the copyright holder, Working Partners. All rights reserved. While all the Clans enjoy times of peace and relativecalm, ThunderClan is probably the Clan that does themost to promote quiet coexistence for all cats. Thesecats are respectful of other Clans, their habits, and theirterritories. ThunderClan has a long history of speakingout against injustice and seeking to mediate differencesbetween individual cats and even whole Clans.excellent swimmers who don’t mind being wet the wayother cats often do.7

If you’re strong, clever, or sneaky enough to getsomething, then it rightfully belongs to you. Some Clans interpret ShadowClan’s aggression anddeception as proof that these cats are nothing more thanbattle hungry, untrustworthy sneaks. But the cats ofShadowClan believe they have the truest warriors of anyClan, and if anyone wants to contest that claim they’llhave to back it up with claws and fury.ShadowClan BonusAny cat that is a member of ShadowClan automaticallyhas 1 level of training in the Sneak Skill. When it is timeto pick Skills, you may make one of your choices toincrease the value of your Sneak Skill from 1 to 2.Permission to reproduce and distribute this page granted by the copyright holder, Working Partners. All rights reserved.Ability Scores8Ability scores represent your cat’s most basic physical, mental, and emotional abilities. Just about everythingyour character does in the Warriors Adventure Game willbe based at least partially on his or her Ability scores. And the best part is that over time these numbers will getbetter as your cat gains experience through adventures. The three Abilities are: Strength, Intelligence, andSpirit. Each Ability is linked to a specific kind of activity, and is represented by a number between 1 and 10. As anapprentice, your character only has a total of 5 points tospread among these abilities. After reading the descriptions below, decide what yourkit’s starting Ability scores will be. He or she must haveat least 1 point in each Ability. With only 5 points tospend, this limits your possibilities, so choose carefully. When you’ve decided just how you want yourapprentice’s Ability scores to be distributed, write themdown on your character sheet.StrengthStrength represents your apprentice’s physical powerand coordination. Cats with higher Strength scores arebetter able to climb, pounce, wrestle, and do other bitsof roughhousing. When they fight, Strength makes theirblows hit harder (though not necessarily land moreaccurately).Cats with the higher Strength scores are usuallylarger, or at least more muscular, and more imposingthan cats with lower Strength scores. They tend to makegood warriors and hunters, and are generally admiredfor providing protection for the Clan.MuddypawYou already know what Muddypaw’s Abilityscores are, but it might be helpful to see whythey are that way. With only 5 points to spend, Muddypaw had tohave at least one Ability with a score of 1. Since heis a relatively small cat that doesn’t like fightingor roughhousi

What Is an Adventure Game? In an adventure game, you and your friends each will create a character in a story—in this case, cats from the warrior Clans. Your cats will find themselves involved in adventures and mysteries, just like the characters in the novels. At its heart the Warriors Adventure Game is a kind
