Worth’s research shows students who use theLaunchPad adaptive testing called Learning Curve outperform students who do not. You canfind the learning curve and other resources by expanding the various sections of the LaunchPad. There are also diagnostic chapter quizzes that will let you know where you need to domore work. Directions on accessing Launch Pad are in the content section of the course in D2Lunder Resources. LaunchPad requires an activation code that should be present with most newtext purchases. It can also be purchased separately. Student feedback has been positive.

Study Guide for Hockenbury 6th ed (Probably not necessary with LaunchPad access- the LaunchPadshould be a very effective study tool. If you will not have LaunchPad it’s worth considering buyingthis)) D2L Website (REQUIRED): The course documents (syllabus, assignments, handouts, etc.) must beaccessed on the internet, on our D2L course site. After the start of class, you can access the site at:https://ecc.desire2learn.com/index.asp Detailed information about how to access D2L can be foundhere: www.elgin.edu/online . If you have problems logging on to D2L it is your responsibility toaddress them immediately. If you should need technical assistance with the Desire2Learn systemduring the course of your online class, please contact the D2L Help desk, at 847-214-7506 or by e-mailat d2lhelpdesk@elgin.eduooIn an emergency getting work in before the deadline is your priority so email if you have to butbe aware I will deduct points if the work is not submitted as required in D2L.If you do not have access to the internet at home, we have several computer labs on campus oryou can use the Psychology Lab computers on the in F 116. Required: Frequent checking of your student gmail (there is a link at your homepage in D2L in thestrip on the top labeled “Student Mail”) is required. You are responsible for knowing informationdistributed through student email which may include changes in due dates. Required: A stable internet connection for taking the reading quizzes and submitting the chapterexams and essay exams. If your computer is questionable or you want to have a way to document acomputer problem take the quizzes at a campus computer lab so that an ECC employee can document itif there is an issue. I do not recommend taking quizzes on a wireless connection unless you are SUREyou will not have time out issues. Timing out will cause D2L to stop working, definitely not what youwant to happen in the middle of a quiz. I do not recommend attempting to take quizzes on a cell phone,IPAD or tablet. Required: Paying attention to D2L messages – Make sure you pay attention to your D2L homepagefor announcements about D2L downtime and D2L related technology issues (that often come up ifbrowsers are updated before D2L is). Strongly Recommended: When accessing D2L, I recommend using Firefox (PC) as your webbrowser. Safari is fine if you are using a MAC. HOW TO REACH ME:o The best way to reach me is via email. Always identify yourself with your name, the courseyou are enrolled in, and your course and section number. Demonstrate familiarity with the major concepts, theoretical perspectives, and empirical findings ingeneral psychology.2. Understand and apply basic research methods in general psychology, including research design andinterpretation.

3. Use critical thinking, skeptical inquiry, and the scientific approach to solve problems related topsychological processes.4. This means there will be group work, including assignments that require out of class work to be completed between course meetings. You can expect that between day 1 and day 2 of any given chapter that there will be out of class workthat will need to be done. Although much of this work will be discussed or presented in groups, the actual out of classassignments between classes are all individual in nature (i.e. you will not have to coordinate to meetwith group members outside of class to do these assignments). Although there is a lot of group responsibility in terms of learning and presenting information, allgrading is on an individual basis. Groups will be semi-persistent (i.e. you will keep the same groups if the majority of class memberswant to keep their groups, although I reserve the right to shuffle groups if one group ends up too smalldue to student attrition). Because of the nature of this course it is VITAL that you come to class prepared, on time, and havingread the chapter, which is why there are chapter reading quizzes worth a substantial portion of yourgrade, due before we begin each chapter in class. If I become aware that you have come to class unprepared and are unable to do the work required as aresult of this you will lose participation/attendance points. You also should always bring your textbook to class. If you are missing your textbook and thus areunable to effectively participate in class you will lose attendance points. There are many group assignments that require you to bring information or data to class. If you failto complete these assignments and show up without the information you should bring (as assigned bythe instructor or as decided by your group) you will lose attendance points.

Although this course will include many opportunities to work together with your classmates, please notethat all GRADED work (i.e. reading quizzes, essay exams, in class exams and the individualpresentation) must be YOUR individual work. Working together on individual assessments is not acceptable and will be considered cheating. Yourgrade must reflect your own knowledge about the course material. If you include material in your work from external sources without providing an accurate reference tothose sources you will FAIL this course. I regularly flunk students for academic misconduct. Youhave been warned. Note that in a three credit hour class approximately 3 hours in class and 6 hours outside of class shouldbe spent on the course each week. By being prepared and participating in the active learningcomponents of this course you should end up with a deeper understanding of psychology than in astandard lecture/discussion format course.METHODS OF EVALUATION:A) Attendance & Participation Attendance is required and will be taken every class period. If you come into class after I have taken attendance, an absence will still be recorded. It is yourresponsibility to meet with me after class if you would like the absence changed to a tardy. If you donot, an absence will be recorded for you for that class session. You are responsible for any information given during class, including announcements, handouts, basiclecture material. Etc. It is your responsibility to get notes and information for classes you missed from other students in thiscourse. Exams come largely from class material and not everything is adequately covered in the textbook. Inorder to excel in this course you must be in class. Classes are worth 2 points each if you are on time and do not leave early or 1 point if you are late orleave early. At the end of the semester I will adjust these grades to give you one week of “extra credit”. If you miss three classes in a row without communicating with me you may be withdrawn from thecourse. You will also lose all participation points if coming to class unprepared makes you unable to participatein class activities, if a failure to bring the textbook makes you unable to participate in class activities, orif you fail to bring information to class to be used in group activities as assigned by the instructor or byyour group. You cannot make up attendance/participation points unless you meet the criteria for an excused absence(See Makeup Work). You may be required to complete class activities in addition to documentingyour emergency in order to make up attendance points. If you cannot be consistently in class, prepared and on time, you should not take this course .Attendance estimated at about @ 50 pointsB) Extra Credit Points:The total amount of possible extra credit in this course is 24-74 points over the course of the semester. Therewill be no additional extra credit. This is also why the makeup policy is as stringent as it is. Do not wait until

the last minute to do work for this course. I realize that given the computer testing, computer or electricityissues may occur that cannot be documented, this is why I will replace one chapter exam at the end of thesemester (see below). The bonus points from the syllabus and plagiarism quizzes are sufficient to replace 2missed reading assignments over the course of the semester.Extra Credit Syllabus Quiz: Bonus points added to your point total for the course Due Sunday by 11:59 pm on the end of the first week of classes. See your D2L Calendar at the course homepage for what this date is Up to 10 bonus points. Untimed, ONE attempt. Covers material from the syllabus Cannot be made upPlagiarism Quiz: Bonus points added to your point total for the courseDue Sunday by 11:59pm on the end of the second week of classes.See your D2L Calendar at the course homepage for what this date isUp to 10 bonus points.Untimed, repeatable (unlimited attempts previous to due date/time).Covers material from the ECC plagiarism modules (see the course content in D2L for a link to this) andthe syllabusCannot be made upAttendance At the end of the semester I will adjust the final attendance so that there is one week of bonus points forthe course (i.e. if you have perfect attendance in the last section of attendance you will earn a week ofbonus points). Up to 4 pointsChapter Exam Replacement At the end of the semester I will replace your lowest chapter exam grade with your grade on yourIndividual Presentation (provided this will increase your grade).C) Reading Quizzes: Chapter reading quizzes are in the course management system of the course and must be taken previousto the chapter being covered in class. The language of the reading quizzes is not always identical to the book language- this is on purpose! It is YOUR responsibility to know when we are starting a new chapter by attending class and followingthe course schedule (we will generally spend 2 days on every chapter, so basically one of these will bedue before every other class day). The intent of these assignments is to make sure everyone comes to class with a working knowledge ofthe vocabulary of the chapter – so they are mostly surface level assignments that do not require a lot ofthought (minus the one for chapter 5). Do not be led astray- the chapter exams will be targeted at thelevel of application and will be *much* more difficult!

These assignments are mainly multiple choice and matching, although there are some other types ofquestions occasionally. They are untimed, and you can have 2 chances at them, PROVIDED you make at least a 60% on yourfirst attempt (i.e. you must make a real attempt on your first try or you do not get a second try). Because of the difficulty of the Chapter 5 reading quiz, the bar for that quiz is set at 40% on the firstattempt. Assuming you get a second attempt the higher attempt will count. Quizzes will be disabled by the instructor when the chapter is begun so you will not see due dates onthem in D2L (this is to prevent having to redo the entire quiz schedule if a day of class is cancelled forsome reason). Once the grading period has passed I will reopen the reading quizzes so you can use them to practice forthe exams. At that point you will not be able to earn any points on the quizzes. If the grading periodhas passed and you cannot open an old quiz, email me with your section and the quiz number and I willmake sure to get it open for practice ASAP. There will be NO late reading quizzes unless you meet the criteria for an excused absence (See MakeupWork) You are welcome and encouraged to take reading quizzes early!Reading Quizzes (10 points x 12 chapters) 120 pointsD) Chapter Exams: When accessing D2L, I recommend using Firefox (PC) as your web browser. Safari is fine if you areusing a MAC. Do not take assessments on a phone or tablet! I recommend reading the handout “How to Study for My Class” in the content section of D2Learly in the semester to guide your studying for my exams. Due dates for Chapter exams are in the course schedule (subject to change- pay attention in class!) It is your responsibility to keep track of the due dates and any changes that are stated in class or viaemail Chapter exams must be both saved and submitted by 11:59 PM on the due dates You are welcome and encouraged to take exams early. If you wait until the last minute to do workand have a computer issue you will NOT be allowed to make up the work- this is a recipe fordisaster! DO NOT DO THIS! Chapter Exams consist of 50 multiple choice questions and must be taken via the Desire 2 Learn coursemanagement system. The time limit for chapter exams is 75 minutes, and they are worth 1 point per question or 50 points perchapter. I will replace your lowest chapter exam grade with the proportion of points you get on yourindividual presentation at the end of the semester (provided you are not already earning an A in thecourse without doing so). Graded Chapter Exams are TIMED and you only get ONE attempt on each quiz. You have 75minutes to take each graded quiz from the time you open the exam. Make sure to SAVE and SUBMITyour answers BEFORE the time expires. You will not have time to look up the answers; I encouragethe use of prepared notes! Once they are SAVED and SUBMITTED (previous to the due date/time), Chapter Exams shouldautomatically export your grade into the grade book in desire to learn. Always check the gradebook to

make sure your results are there. This should happen automatically. If a grade for an exam submittedon time does not show up in the grade book, email me with details immediately. You will NOT have access to which questions were answered incorrectly until after the due date for thatmaterial has passed. This access will open after the makeup period is over and remain open for oneweek. Feedback Availability: Feedback will be open starting 1 week after the due date/time for at least oneweek. After that you will not be able to see detailed feedback. How to check your Quiz Questions/ Essay Feedback in D2L1. Click Quiz Tab2. Next to your completed quiz there is a triangle that is associated with a pulldown menu. Click that, then click “Submissions”3. You will see summary statistics for your quiz4. Click “Attempt 1” (if this is an essay feedback will be in both attempts if you submitted essaysseparately- after you look at attempt 1 look at attempt 2)5. If you are in the window where feedback is available (see above) you should be able to see thecorrect answers for each question.6. You can also navigate to feedback via the gradebook. If something funky happens while you are taking a quiz write down the questions (partial is fine, enough to identify it) and your answers (A, B, C, etc) so that you can immediately email them tome before the due date/time. Failure to do so will result in a zero for that exam. I cannot beresponsible for computer problems on your end, so make sure you are taking the Chapter Exams on areliable machine with reliable Internet. If you have problems once, do not use the same setup again(common sense!). If you really want to play it safe take your assessments in a monitored computerlab on campus so an ECC employee can verify if you have a computer malfunction during an exam. In addition to the graded Chapter Exams and my reading assignments there are publisher providedpractice quizzes which are not graded under the quizzes tab- they are there to assist you in studying andself-testing prior to taking the graded Chapter Exams. Because the practice quizzes are publishercreated quizzes they may contain material that is not in my learning objectives and will not be on mygraded Chapter Exams. There are also diagnostic quizzes and adaptive learning quizzes at LaunchPadif you have access to that tool. The Learning Curve quizzes are highly recommended at launch pad as astudy tool! There will be NO late chapter exams unless you meet the criteria for an excused absence (See thesection on Makeup Work)Chapter Exam Points12 multiple choice chapter exams,50 questions @ 1 point each 600 pointsAdditional information on testing: I will never ask you when any psychologist was born or when they died. I will not ask you the year of when experiments were done. Basically on the whole I care much more about your ability to apply your knowledge to newexamples (I love questions with made up people in them- look for these in the practice quizzesto get an idea of what they may look like on the graded quizzes) than your ability to look upwhen exactly nitpicky parts of development happen. KNOWING WORD DEFINITIONS WILL NOT BE ENOUGH! You need to be able to applythe terminology to new examples and scenarios.

E)Short Essay Exams:(!!!) Please read the information about citation and plagiarism at the end of the syllabus if you are usingany external information in your essays. It is not necessary to use external sources, but you are welcometo provided you cite them correctly. I WILL flunk you for the course if I find external information inyour written work and you have not provided a reference to where you got that information (!!!) If you have previously taken this course (or any other course with me) you CANNOT reuse old writtenwork. Please select new questions to answer for the essay questions. Self-plagiarism will result ineither a zero or course failure. Essay exams can be found in the “Quizzes” tab of D2L, and the essay questions to select from are thissyllabus. Basically the Exams consist of two blanks to put your essays into. Essay exams are due as stated in the course schedule (subject to change). You are responsible for knowing about any changes in due dates as discussed in class or via email. You are welcome and encouraged to submit essays at any time. If you procrastinate and miss a due dateI cannot help you- so don’t wait! Each essay is worth up to 20 points. For this course you will choose two essays to answer PER UNIT. You must select one Critical Thinking essay and one Multiculturalism/Individual Differences essay foreach Unit (they are labeled as such in the handout). Additionally, the two essays you select CANNOT be from the same chapter. Make sure you label your essays with what chapter they are from and which type of question they are(i.e. you could choose Ch1 Critical Thinking with Ch3 Multiculturalism OR Ch2 multiculturalism withCh3 critical thinking, but NOT Ch2 critical thinking with Ch2 multicultural, 2 multicultural essays or 2critical thinking essays). I have purposefully given you flexibility on topics so that you can select essays that are interesting toyou. The expectation for length on short essays is at least 350 words or longer. Paraphrasing, copying or quoting from the textbook or any other source without proper citation isunacceptable and will result in either a zero on the essay or COURSE FAILURE depending on thelevel of academic misconduct. If your essays have external material and there is not an accuratereference to where that material came from you will fail this course. I will make an exception only for definitions of words- you may use/copy definitions only from therequired textbook only without citation. You may also reference (textbook) (class video) or (personalknowledge) if you are including opinions from the book, facts/opinion discussed in either the video orfacts you know from other courses or your life experiences. You NEVER need to cite your ownpersonal examples or opinions. I strongly recommend that you write the essays in a word processing program so you can check themfor spelling and grammar and so you have a copy if you accidentally navigate away from the essayexam or your Internet connection times out (there is a spellcheck in D2L but it’s not terribly easy touse). You should be able to copy/paste the essays from a word processing program the Essay ExamQuiz. The keyboard shortcuts Ctl-C (copy) and Ctl-V (paste) may be useful commands if you do notalready know them. Don’t forget to fix the font size. Make sure to SAVE and SUBMIT your essays via the Essay Exams in D2L or they will not count asturned in. Accepting essays in any other way (email, on paper, etc.) is up to my discretion (the answer

is generally no unless you have contacted me in advance and have a good reason) and will result in aloss of points. Late work will not be accepted except in extreme, unavoidable, unforeseeablecircumstances that you can physically document (see makeup work). For essay exams you will be able to see feedback once they are graded. This is NOT automatic;obviously I have to do this manually so there will not be a grade in the gradebook until I’ve done myweekly grading sweep. If you have notifications turned on D2L may send you an auto-email that youhave a zero when you submit your essays- do not panic! To see the feedback to go "Quizzes" then find the essay exam. Click "Submissions" next to the exam. Then select the graded attempt number(s) on which you want to read feedback. Finally under youranswer click "View Feedback" to see my comments. You need to be in the same attempt in which yousubmitted a particular essay in order to see your answer and view my feedback. Essays that get 100%may not have comments, any essay where points were lost will. I will make every effort to give you feedback on essays within one week of the due date of thematerials. E-mail is the most efficient means of communication if you have questions about the courseor the grading. If it has not been at least one week since the essay due date please do not contact me further aboutwhere your grades are. I will give you written feedback designed to help you write future essays by adding my feedback to theessay exam quizzes while I am grading them. If you want copies of your graded essays, be sure tomake copies of your work. The Write Place on campus can assist you if you need help with yourwriting. There will be NO late essay exams unless you meet the extremely strict criteria for an excused absence(See Makeup Work)ESSAY GRADING INFORMATION In addition to losing points for not completely or accurately answering the specific question asked(content) , I also have the following expectations for college level writing:Spelling & Grammar-Essays with more than a fewspelling or grammar mistakeswill automatically lose 10%.Proofread!Format: Complete sentences, paragraphs, font size-Essays that fail to useparagraphs or use improperformat (lists instead ofsentences or incompletesentences) will lose points.Font size must be legible (TNR12 or larger).Use of an introduction &conclusion-Essays that fail to use anintroduction and/or conclusionwill lose pointsEffective integration of textmaterial and personalthoughts/examples-You must make it clear thatyou understand and can applythe material from the textrelevant to the essay questionyou select or you will losepoints. Use the language fromthe question to make sure youare staying on topic.Organization-Your essay must have sensibleorganization and flow. If thequestion has multiple parts besure to specify which parts ofyour essay are addressing eachpart of the question or you willlose points.Length-Essays that do not meet thelength requirement (titles andsuch do not count) willautomatically have aproportional number of pointsdeducted and be rounded downto the next whole number.
