UNDERGRADUATE REGULATIONS & SYLLABUSES 2020/2021THE FACULTY OF SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGYMESSAGE FROM THEDEANWelcome to the Faculty of Science & Technology (FST), at TheUniversity of the West Indies, St. Augustine. We are proud andenthusiastic that you have chosen the FST for tertiary levelcertification and the attendant competencies that will serve youon your career path. Your programme may permit you theopportunity to explore more than one discipline within this oranother faculty. As far as possible, you should acquire new skillsthat would complement your chosen discipline or which maycontribute to the enhancement of your capabilities andadaptability within a rapidly changing workforce. The FST offers programmes in the fundamental sciences:Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Computer Science andBiological Sciences. Reflective of our vibrant research activity, wealso offer programmes in important areas of technologyincluding Environmental Technology, Information Technology,Renewable Energy Technology, Biotechnology, Electronics,Computer Science & Technology, Environmental Science,Biomedical Technology and Biomedical Physics. At the StAugustine Campus, the FST delivers the most diverse suite ofacademic programmes by highly qualified and committed academic, administrative, technical and support staff. We offeryou a robust educational experience. This booklet contains important information on Faculty Regulations as well as details on our programmes. It is anindispensable asset for navigating your progress and you will need to familiarise yourself with it to take advantage of thevaluable guidance available from regular meetings with your academic advisors. Traditionally, The UWI has focused mainlyon course and programme delivery as in-person activities. Over the past six years, we have developed some courses andprogrammes as fully online content, or to be delivered in a blended format, including roughly 66% face-to-face delivery and33% online or remote delivery. The current health and safety protocols necessitate modifications in coursedelivery/instruction modality. These modifications and more detailed information on how your programmes will be deliveredare not indicated in this booklet but shall be shared with you by your respective Departments as the COVID-19 Pandemic isdynamic and situations may change with little notice. Any and all changes are subject to Campus and National directivesand would be reflected in communiques disseminated by Campus Marketing and Communications. This year our classes will be delivered online through remote teaching. We know that some of you may experience challengesaccessing your classes remotely and we give the assurance that we are taking all of this into account. We are following thelatest national guidelines for physical distancing and safe operations.Your ability to focus and remain dedicated will reap rich rewards. Most departments operate Help Desks which are designedto meet students at their particular skill level and assist in building frameworks for growth. On a broader perspective, thereare also several support systems in place under the umbrella of the Division of Student Services & Development that aredesigned to foster your success and assist you in managing the challenges of university life. I urge you to consider club andother activities as it is important to build your networks and experience as much as possible. On behalf of the staff of the FST, I offer you a warm welcome and wish you an enjoyable and successful time at the StAugustine Campus of The University of the West Indies.Dr Brian N.
