Dear People of God,If the timing of my letter writing has been successful, today is Trinity Sunday. And that brings meto a question I was asked about the Trinity; namely, how does it work? Well, that’s a mystery we’llhave to wait and ask once we get to Heaven, which is a good reason to live a life worthy ofHeaven. On the other hand, I’ll borrow from modern science to propose a passive way to betterunderstand the mystery. Albert Einstein proposed a theory in the 1930’s that everything we knowtoday began with the Big Bang (he didn’t call it that but his work led to the advanced theoriesabout the Big Bang). His theory reduced everything to the famous equation E mc2 which seemssimple enough but suggests that there is a strict, unbreakable relationship between matter, energyand gravity. Today, physicists are moving closer and closer to a unified theory which will informus how those three realities move from one form to the other and back again. As an aside, there isa theory about the Big Bang that has caught up to the Book of Genesis: prior to the Big Bang, therewas nothing, i.e., creation ex nihilo. At any rate, the key here is relationality – things are inrelationships. Shifting to the arena of theology, we know that God is in relationship to us: I will beyour God, you will be my people, creates a relationship or mode of interaction which governsbehaviors. Because of this universality of relationships, theological theorists believe that Godmust be internally relational and related, hence the existence within the divine of related personswho we call Father, Son and Holy Spirit. We can get a grasp of what those internal relationshipsmust be from how the divine relates to us: as creator, as savior, as spiritual/intellectual awakener. In the revelations from the Bible, we can easily discern God’s creative self, and in the Gospels ,the self which comes to save. In the celebration just a week ago of Pentecost, we can clearlydiscern a relationship of awakening humanity to its deeper and richer sense of being. At this point, the theorists generally default to the accepted generalizations about the internal functioning of theTrinity, using the language of the Creeds. God the Father begets God the Son, and the Holy Spiritprocesses from Father and Son. What remains is a mystery but a mystery God actually expects usto explore so that our relationship in the love of God can continually grow. For those interested ina beautiful reflection on the trinity, take a look at Richard Rohr’s Divine Dance which is areflection on an early Church icon depicting the Trinity. The Celebration of SacramentsInfant Baptism: The Sacrament of Baptism is regularly celebrated on Sunday during or after the Eucharistic Liturgy. Registeredparishioners are asked to arrange for the Baptismal Preparation Class and the Liturgical Celebration by calling the Parish Office.Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults: RCIA is the process of growing in your faith and love of God. The exact date and time ofyour wedding should not be determined until after consultation with a priest or deacon. If either party has previously been civilly orreligiously married, the Presider is not permitted to set a date for the wedding without resolving the previous marriage.Pastoral Care of the Sick: When a parishioner is admitted to the hospital, nursing home, or confined to home because of age orinfirmity, please call the Parish Office.
