Dear Friends of Horizons,With family homelessness on the rise in Massachusetts and a pandemic that has deeply affected Horizons’community and the world, this year has been marked by challenges. However, despite uncertain times, ourteam and supporters rose to those challenges and continued to make a difference in the lives of familiesexperiencing homelessness. The pandemic brought new obstacles and pressures that have impacted the homeless in profound ways. Ourteam responded by innovating to meet those emerging needs and kept us moving forward in the areas ofchild development, family support and advocacy. While our work and how we did it changed, our resolve toempower families creating better futures for themselves and their children only grew stronger. When the COVID-19 crisis hit in March, while we had to observe a temporary shut-down in our childcarecenters, we stepped up for our families in new ways providing groceries, hygiene products and gift cards soour families could buy much needed supplies. Our staff remained in constant contact with our families toprovide guidance and support. We ensured that children quarantining in shelter had access to technology andtoys that would keep them engaged and learning. As summer approached, we created and implemented newsafety protocols so we could reopen our early education centers while keeping staff and children healthy andsafe. At the same time, we partnered with organizations across the state to advocate for legislative prioritizationand funding that would better support families on the brink and early educators, an undervalued and yetcritical part of our economic infrastructure. We expanded professional development opportunities for Horizonsemployees, and worked hard to continue to foster diversity, equity and inclusion within our organization. As we reflect on our past successes, we also look to Horizons’ exciting future. Next year, we will open thedoors of the Edgerley Family Horizons Center – our new headquarters and centralized location for all of ourearly education programs. Over the next several years Horizons will deepen our curriculum in the areas ofSTEM and Literacy, serve more children and families and give them on-site access to medical care and othermuch needed services to support their transitions into housing and economic self-sufficiency.Our success in this trying year would not be possible without the many friends of Horizons who believe in ourmission and the impact we make on families experiencing homelessness. On behalf of the leadership team, thank you for your support and commitment to the families we serve.Sincerely,Kate BarrandPresident & CEO1
