FORTIS ACADEMY GOALIE MOVEMENT CIRCUITS/ DRILLS – SQUIRT THROUGH BANTAMHow to use the following circuits to maximize development? Goalies can often get forgotten or passed overduring skills portions of team practices. A large factor leading to this is coaches who do not have goalie coachingknowledge or experience and may feel uncomfortable giving advice or may not know drills for goalies to build onmovement skills. As coaches and goalie coaches you will be with the team and goalie everyday and should have agoal to make sure the goalies just as other players are always doing something to build on strength and movementskills.Performing the same movements and exercises on a frequent basis before adding more advance techniques. It’sbetter to focus intensely on a given skill in a shorter period of time than try to hit a bunch of skills at one. Becauseif this each age level will have a list of basic items and skills that you should be focusing on. There will be a varietyof movement drills to choose from so feel free to switch it up and use a variety of drills, but during all of thesedrills be sure a goalie is focusing on the noted skills and has a strong command of those items before moving tomore advanced movements. All drills can be applicable at all levels. These breakouts are rudimentary guidelines and a good starting point foreach age level. That does not mean that a younger goalie can not or should not do drills from an older level. Forexample, if you have a squirt goalie who is capable and has strong foundations feel free to utilize drills from otherage levels. On the reverse side continue to reinforce the foundation with basic drills in the older goalies, a bantamgoalie (and beyond to high school, college, etc.) is never too old to work on the drills listed under the squirtcategory. These age levels are soft guidelines and you should cater the drills and workouts to your specific goalie. You don’t need to do all the exercises listed. On a given practice is the team is skating for 10-15 minutes someoneshould be working with the goalie and going through movement drills for about the same amount of time. Eachage group will have a large selection of drills, but you do not need to utilize them all. There may be certain drillsyou see as being more beneficial to your specific goalie, or that may focus on a weakness they have. Feel free totailor the drill selection to fit your goalie(s).If you’re not sure, don’t be afraid to ask. Teaching goalies is something that is very difficult as methods areconstantly changing and developing, on top of that not all coaches are going to have experience playing or workingwith goalies before. Fortis wants to make sure that our goalies get the best coaching possible and to do so we wantto help the coaches whenever possible. IF you have questions come up or aren’t sure how to do something or whywe are doing it, please ask us and we’d be happy to help answer any questions.

FORTIS ACADEMY GOALIE MOVEMENT CIRCUITS/ DRILLS – SQUIRTSThe Basics. Squirt goalies are still very new to the position so be sure to focus on the foundation of the movementdrills. Be sure to watch for these and help guide the goalies to focus on the basics. The drills in this section will bevery simple movement drills designed to focus on the following items. Strength and familiarity with shuffles and t-pushesHand and chest balance while moving. – chest up butt out, hands steady, hands and stick guidingmovementsQuick short movements – squirts will not have the strength to execute movements or drills in the samemanner as older goalies. Focus on keeping movements short, explosive and in good form even if it takestwo shuffles vs one. Don’t let a goalie drag out t-pushes or shuffles to get more distance. The Drills.ZIG-ZAG DRILLSFind an area of the ice to utilize, either between the blue lines or betweenthe blue line and goal line works well. Goalie will face one directionthroughout entirety of the drill. Goalie starts square and pivots to one side. Then executes two shuffles. Goalie pivots back other direction and pushestwice other direction. Repeats for remainder of the distance. Once shufflesare complete repeat with two t-pushes.Focuses: Good positioning - Chest square, stick on ice, and handssteadyStrong, quick pushesPivot at correct depth- don’t cheat to shorten drillSHUFFLE/ T-PUSH AROUND CREASE DRILLSimple drill to work on quick feet in the crease. Start on one pipeand push out to edge of the crease. Quickly shuffle following theedge of the crease around to other pipe, repeat other direction.Once shuffles complete repeat with t-pushes.Focuses: Good positioning - Chest square, stick on ice,and hands steady

Strong, quick pushesPushes are smooth and quick, but not short and choppyBoth feet on ice at all times.PIPE TO PIPE DRILLSimple drill to work on shuffles and awareness and familiarity inthe net. Start on one pipe and shuffle across to the other. Followvision progressions as you move across. Vision tracking from zone1 through to zone 4.Focuses: Always look first, vision should lead pipe to pipemovementHands and stick move firstSeal on either pipeALWAYS shuffles. Even if it takes two or three shuffles, never t-push pipe to pipe. Need to be ableto quickly reverse back other direction.BOX DRILL & U-DRILLStart on one pipe for box drill push out to corner of crease then t-pushacross top and shuffle back to other pipe repeat other direction. For u-drillstart on pipe, shuffle pipe to pipe, then out to corner of crease and back, repeat other direction.Focuses: Stop with correct outside foot, facing up ice.Correct vision progression during pipe-to-pipe in U-drillADVANCE DRILLS FOR SQUIRTS:If your squirt goalie has confidently mastered the drills and focuses above, feel free to move into the followingdrills described in the PeeWee section while still focusing on the same key concepts. Y-Drill, X-Drill, & W-DrillIron Cross

FORTIS ACADEMY GOALIE MOVEMENT CIRCUITS/ DRILLS – PEEWEESThe Basics. PeeWee goalies should have basic foundation of the core movements and can begin to expand thesetechniques into new situation and skills. We will do so by still focusing on developing leg and core strength throughslightly more complex and demanding drills. Begin to push goalies to maintain good form while pushing for more strength and speedBegin to incorporate advances techniques at an elementary level (i.e. butterfly slide and out and backpushes)Goalies in PeeWees will begin to develop their own style. This is a tough line to draw but we must let ayoung goalie develop their own style and what works best for them while still teaching correct techniquesand stifling any bad/ incorrect habits.Out and back pushes:In PeeWees one key technique we will begin to incorporate is strong forward and backward pushes. With thesepushes we will be trying to eliminate goalies moving forward and backward with c-cuts. PeeWee goalies shouldhave an easy grasp of doing a strong push forward but will struggle with backwards. We need to get thembeginning to work on single backward pushes instead of wiggling with c-cuts. Many drill sin the PeeWee sectionwill focus on this item. The Drills.OUT AND BACK PUSHESWith this new technique simply have the goalie work on pushing forward and backward approximately 3’. Be sureto practice with both feet. Easiest way to see how well a goalie is doing is the marks thy leave in the ice. We wantto see short straight cuts perpendicular to movement vs long swooping c-cuts in the ice. This will be very difficultfor the goalies to grasp and achieve. Continue to work on throughout drills and remind goalies to work towardsthis.GoodBad

IRON CROSSStart at the bottom of a face off circle. Push forward to the center, then beginshuffling to the right. Once at the outside of the circle switch direction andshuffle left to center. Once at center push forward to top of circle then pushbackwards to center again. T-push left to outside of circle then t-push right tocenter. Finish with strong backwards pushFocuses: Strong out and back pushes, not c-cutsQuick strong shuffles/ t-pushesX-DRILLPipe to pipe out to opposite corner of crease and back. Repeatthrough other side. Repeat through entire cycle multiple times.Focuses: Strong precise movementsPivot and push to pipe, don’t just back in.Y-DRILLStart on pipe and push out past top of crease as if challenging abreak away. Backwards push to top of crease then pivot andpush to opposite pipeFocuses: Strong out and back pushes, not c-cutsPivot and push to pipe, don’t just back in.

W-DRILLStart on pipe and push out at shallow angle stopping withoutside foot. Push back to pipe, then to top of crease. Pivotand push to opposite pipe. Repeat steps from oppositepipe, repeat full cycle multiple timesFocuses: Forward and backward strong pushesQuick shallow step off pipeStopping with outside foot.ADVANCE DRILL OPTIONS FOR PEEWEES:If your goalie is comfortable and able begin to also work in butterfly slides into the drills listed below. Work oncontrolling slide, staying in good form, and not sliding too far. Control your slide by stopping yourself with yourleading blade. Work on starting standing and sliding into butterfly position as well as starting in butterfly andpushing to standing. Butterfly slides can be incorporated into the following drills Zig Zag, Y-drill, Iron Cross, T-push Butterfly slide

FORTIS ACADEMY GOALIE MOVEMENT CIRCUITS/ DRILLS – BANTAMSThe Basics. Bantam level goalies should have a very strong grasp of the basic movements and when to utilizethem. For bantam goalies we really want to push them to be quicker, stronger, and more precise. Hockey is a gameof inches and every movement for a goalie needs to have a reason and be precise. For bantams we will continue toincrease the complexity and speed of drills and make sure our goalies understand what they are doing in everymove and have complete control of their body during movement. Form needs to be held consistent during movements, no excuses for a bantam goalie’s body to be out ofcontrol or sloppy during movementsIncorporate butterfly slides, recoveries, and transitions into all drills to always be introducing new anddifferent movements to our goalies.Continue to allow/help goalies develop in their own style and cater drills to not only strengthen theirweaknesses but also grow into their personal style and strengths. The Drills.BUTTERFLY SLIDESStart down in the butterfly position. Simply slide back andforth between two pucks to gain control of your body andedges while moving in the butterfly position. Start withsimple side to side motions and progress to moving out andback with and without pivotsFocuses: Controlling slide as to not overslideGaining power, speed and confidence on edges whiledown.
