Ayoung man approaches Jesus asking whathe must do to inherit eternal life. The Lordresponds telling him to keep the commandments. The young man tells Jesus that hehas kept all of the commandments hiswhole life. Jesus then tells the young manthat he is lacking in one thing. He tells him,“Go, sell what you have, and give to thepoor and you will have treasure in heaven;then come follow me”. In reaction, theyoung man goes away sad, “for he hadmany possessions”.What is striking about this encounter is thatthe young man knows his purpose, hewants eternal life with God. However, despite his good intentions, he is unable toembrace the path that leads to eternal lifebecause he is too tied to worldly things.Though he wants to go to Heaven, he is unable to detach himself from his possessionsin this life. This should serve as a reminder to all of usthat good intentions are not enough. Wemust be desperate for eternal life, totallyintent on achieving union with God, andwilling to lose everything in order to gainthe kingdom of God. We must allow thegrace of God to open our eyes to see thatthe beauty and glory of eternal life far surpasses the wealth of the world.God Bless,Fr. Bill
