Napoleon HillNapoleon Hill was born into poverty in 1883and achieved great success as an attorneyand journalist. In recent years, theNapoleon Hill Foundation has publishedhis bestselling writings worldwide, givinghim an immense influence around theglobe. Among his famous titles are Thinkand Grow Rich Action Pack, NapoleonHill's A Year of Growing Rich, andNapoleon Hill's Keys to Success.

PrefaceNapoleon Hill as a youth was no differentfrom most young people today. Heassociated success with money in his earlycareer. He wanted to be important, with adisplay of opulence. People today tend toassociate the popular book Think and GrowRich in terms of money - but Hill'sperspective was to change as he matured.Hill remarked in one of his papers thatduring his early career when he wasreceiving large sums of money, he believedit essential that he drive nothing less thana Rolls Royce. He purchased a large estatein New York; he had servants and a varietyof other employees to tend to his wants. This extravagant spending prior to the

Great Depression of 1929 led to Hill losinghis possessions and, later on, his estate. When Grow Rich! with Peace of Mind waspublished in 1967, Hill was eighty-fouryears old. His message had changed. Hewas older, much wiser, and he wanted toportray the importance of peace of mind.Hill in Grow Rich! with Peace of Mind stateshe is trying to help the reader avoid themistakes he made. As you read the book, perhaps you can learn from Hill's life thatmany other things besides money andmaterial items are needed in order to trulyhave peace of mind. You will read oflearning from your past, developing apositive mental attitude, living life free offear, and the importance of sharing yourwealth with others.

Napoleon Hill had a very interesting life ofresearch, interviews, and writings as towhat constitute success. This final bookcombines all of his knowledge on living alife with peace of mind.Don M. GreenExecutive DirectorNapoleon Hill Foundation

ForewordI began to plan this book in the closingyears of the nineteenth century. It has thusbeen nearly seventy years in preparation.During those years I have witnessed morevital changes in the affairs of men than hadtaken place in all the previous years of thehistory of civilization.I have seen the advent of the automobile, the airplane, radio, television, atomicpower, the age of space. I have seenelectric power spread across the country, industry rise to levels of production beyondnineteenth-century dreams, science andtechnology enjoy an almost explosivedevelopment.I have seen old nations disappear, newnations arise, jungles give way to paved

roads, cities burgeon where sleepy villagesonce stood. And I have seen people adaptthemselves to all these changes and goright on being people, just as they havebeen for uncounted thousands of years. You will find this book takes cognizance ofthe changing world. In speaking of people, however, I speak of the forces whichalways have moved people and always will.We still see that without sufficient moneyour lives are mean and hemmed in, so wewant success in earning money. And alongwith money-success we want to be free offears,nervoustensions,self-inducedillness, worries, unhappiness. That is, inaddition to money-success we seek peaceof mind to make our lives complete. Whilethis book may help you win great wealth, it

can help you win peace of mind inabounding measure. As you will see, when we speak of peaceof mind, we speak of more than peace as arestful state. Peace of mind is at the sametime restful and dynamic, or, we might say,a restful base upon which your lifedynamism stands. It has been called thewealth without which you cannot really bewealthy. It manifests itself in many ways:It is freedom from negative forces whichmay take possession of the mind, and fromany such negative attitudes as worry andinferiority. It is freedom from any feeling of want. It isfreedom from self-induced mental andphysical ailments of the kind whichchronically degrade life.

It is freedom from all fears, especially theseven basic fears we shall expose in alltheir ugliness. It is freedom from the common humanweaknessofseekingsomethingfornothing. It is possession of the joy of work andaccomplishment. It is the habit of being oneself and doingone's own thinking. It is the habit of checking one's attitudestoward life and toward one's fellow men,and always adjusting these attitudes for thebetter. It is the habit of helping others to helpthemselves!

It is freedom from anxiety over what mayhappen to you after you die.It is the habit of going the extra mile in allhuman relationships. It is the habit of thinking in terms of whatyou wish to do, instead of thinking of theobstacles which may get in your way.It is the habit of laughing at the pettymisfortunes which may overtake you.It is the habit of giving before trying to get.Peace of mind covers a surprisingly broadfield, doesn't it? In every way you use it, ithelps you win money-success - and more.Peace of mind helps you live your life onyour own terms, in values of your ownchoosing, so that every day your life growsricher and greater.

This volume is written by a man who hasfound peace of mind the hard way, by trialand error. Its purpose is to help others findtheir own peace of mind, along with moneysuccess, by a shorter and less costly route. If some of the episodes seem ultrapersonal, please remember that it is theseemingly small events of a man's lifewhich make up the greater portion of hisexperiences. In my own personal experiences you mayseeyourown.Noticehowsmallexperiences conceal both success andfailure. They are the first testing ground inwhich you are given the opportunity toprove that you are the master of your fate, you are the captain of your soul.

I realize that nobody wishes to takemedicine prescribed by a doctor who doesnot take it himself when seeking thebenefits, he proclaims. The "medicine"given herein is the "medicine" proved by itsmarvelouseffectuponmyselfandthousands of others. Thanks to circumstances I have had the aidof more than five hundred of the mostsuccessful men in America. These menallowed me to go behind the curtains oftheir private lives and see for myself boththeir good qualities and their weaknesses;their successes and their failures; how theyenjoyed or did not enjoy using their money;how this factor related itself to theirpossession or non-possession of peace ofmind.

It was with the Science of PersonalAchievement, built on my interviews andresearch, that I have helped thousands ofmen and women whip poverty, wipe out theeffectsofanegativelyconditionedchildhood, solve problems, rise abovecircumstances which held them back.Let me say I did this many years after Imyself had risen above a heritage of fiveevils - you may know some or all of them: Poverty Illiteracy Ignorance Hopelessness FearAs a youngster I was often hungry. Therewas a time when I ate bark I scraped off

birch trees. Until I reached my teens, Icontinued to be hungry.I am still hungry! Not for physical food, butfor mental food; food for a searching mindwhich still seeks to know more about whysome men succeed and some fail, somehave inward peace, and some have inwardconflict. But I have left my childhoodhandicaps far behind. There came a time when one of the world'srichest men, Andrew Carnegie, backed mein a plan to find the secrets of moneysuccess and life-success. I have been anadviser to three United States Presidents,William Howard Taft, Woodrow Wilson, and Franklin D. Roosevelt, and I helped thefirst President of the Philippines to attainfreedom for his people.

There was a period in which I courted fame.I craved for it, prayed for it and workedendlessly to achieve it. At long last my mailcame from all over the world, sackfuls, more than I ever could read, let aloneanswer.Promoterslookingformycooperation came by the score, merchantsoffered me all kinds of credit and manyoffered to buy my endorsement of theirwares. My tastes now are different. It was when Ifound that if I wanted any sleep, I could nothave a telephone registered in my namethat I began to appreciate peace of mind.Yet while I courted fame, I never stoppedwriting. Book followed book in my effort totell the world what I had learned aboutsuccess, about the value of a positive state

of mind, about human relations. Here is alist of the books I have written - The Law ofSuccess (8 volumes); Think and GrowRich; How to Sell Your Way Through Life; The Master-Key to Riches; How to RaiseYour Own Salary; Mental Dynamite (16volumes);ScienceofPersonalAchievement; and a seventeen lessoncourse now being taught in home study andlocal class groups in the U.S. and manyother countries. The passing years have helped me judgethe value of these books and gauge theireffect upon their readers. They havehelped hundreds of thousands, perhapsmillions, to build lives of happiness andsuccess. I have been interested, all thiswhile, in finding out which of the manyitems of advice have turned out to be most

useful and of most universal application. Ihave checked carefully to see whichanecdotes and types of anecdotes haveprovided the upward turning point at whicha man finds himself and goes. This book represents, in part, a carefulchoice of items which have stood the testof time. In reading these items you willknow that they in particular have somethingwhich takes hold in the mind and builds thepower of the mind to will the best and findit. Also you will find much that is new. Theworld changes not in principle, but incertain aspects which bring different kindsof opportunities to the seeking man. Moremoney-making opportunities have arisen inthe United States during the past two

decades than existed in all of our previoushistory, and still they swarm thick and fast. You will acquire a vast vision for theseopportunities as you read this book. You will find, if you have read my previousworks, that this one has a new and differentobjective, emphasizingvalueswhichmoney alone cannot buy. All of my booksshow in many ways that there is more to lifethan making money. This book proves thepoint far more fully than I was able to proveit years ago - and shows, too, that peace ofmind in itself is a mighty force in helpingyou make money.I have said this book has been nearlyseventy years in the planning. Quite true, but until recently I did not know it. I believewe all are guided by invisible sources of

inspiration; and recently there came to meinspiration from a strange and very realsource, revealing how much of my life hasbeen spent in preparing to write thesepages, urging me to uncover my typewriterand get to work. The man who speaks to you is in hiseighties. His life remains full and hearty. His possessions - of which he surely hasenough - have not taken away the thrill ofaccomplishment. The book is the first stepofaccomplishment;thebestoftheaccomplishment comes in knowing thatthis book will bring wealth and happiness tothose who read and think.I am ready now to write more clearly andmaturely than ever was possible to mebefore. Join me and we will go on a

fascinating journey together . a journeytoward riches, a journey toward thefulfillment of your dearest dreams, ajourney toward a Supreme Secret whichgives you mastery of life itself.- Napoleon Hill 1967
