Iowa Department of Administrative Services – Human Resources EnterpriseSelective ListIntroduction to SelectivesSelective certification requirements, known simply as “selectives,” are position-specific additionalqualification requirements that are based on the demonstrated job-related needs of an individualposition being filled. Not every position will require the use of a selective and some positions mayrequire more than one selective. Each selective used must be directly related to the duties of the job.Using a selective narrows the applicant pool by seeking a more specific type of background within thestated minimum qualifications. Selectives do not take the place of the minimum requirements for avacancy; rather, selectives are necessary, position-specific requirements that an applicant must meetin addition to the minimum qualifications listed for each vacancy. These selective certification requirements are usually based on technical competencies specific to anindividual position. Selectives are often expressed as six months of experience or 12 semester hours ofeducation in the selective area, or a combination of both. However, some others may requirepossession of a specific license, endorsement, or professional certification instead of education or workexperience.Revised June 13, 2019

As the chart above depicts, in the case of vacancies that require a selective, an applicant is qualified ifthe minimum qualifications and the selective certification requirements are met. An applicant is notqualified for the particular position if the minimum qualifications for the job classification are met butthe position-specific selective certification requirements are not met. In that instance, the applicantcould still be qualified for another vacancy in the same job classification that does not require aselective or that requires another selective for which the applicant meets the criteria. In cases where more than one selective is identified as required for a vacancy, the applicant must meetthe requirements for all selectives listed to be considered qualified for the position.Using this ListThe selectives on this list are sorted numerically by a three-digit selective code. Where applicable, adefinition for the selective can be found by clicking on the hyperlinked selective title in the Table ofContents section below. Specific words can also be searched for in this document by using the Edit Find function (Ctrl F) in Adobe Reader.Revised June 13, 2019
