SOCIETY OF MAINTENANCE AND RELIABILITY PROFESSIONALSCERTIFYING ORGANIZATIONCMRP Candidate Guide for Certification and RecertificationI. CertificationStatement of Purpose The Society for Maintenance and Reliability Professionals CertifyingOrganization (SMRPCO) is organized for the purpose of fostering high standards of ethical andprofessional practice in the delivery of services through a recognized, credible credentialingprogram that assures the competency of practitioners of Profession. The underlying ethic uponwhich the certification process rests is absolute fairness and equity in the administration ofexaminations and recertification for all applicants without discrimination. (i.e. because of age, color, creed, gender, ethic or religious background, lifestyle, marital status, national origin orpolitical affiliation, race or sexual orientation.)Rationale for Certification: Achieving the SMRP Mission The key elements of SMRP’smission are the improvement of the maintenance and reliability profession and supporting theeducation of maintenance and reliability practitioners. From the first days of SMRP, it was clear that there were no consistent, well-defined standardsfor the body of knowledge and capabilities that maintenance and reliability practitioners shouldhave to be effective. Further, there was no way to differentiate those who have mastered thevarious elements of excellence from those who simply hold the job. SMRP realized that without awell-defined body of capabilities and a method of assessment it could not realistically fulfill allelements of our mission.Improving the profession requires a standard of excellence and an incentive to attain thestandard. Maintenance and reliability managers are often promoted because of technical skills, without regard for their ability to improve work processes, create change, or manage people.SMRP believes that maintenance and reliability practitioners need greater stature and credibilityin their organizations and industry to be heard. We believe the message of Maintenance andReliability adding value is often drowned out by day-to-day production demands.Benefits of Certification The benefits of certification are apparent for many fields and veryattractive to practitioners in many organizations.
