The First PageDo what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law.It was a heartwarming and gratifying experience recently to see upwards of fiftymembers of the Portland Thelemic community attend the mid-week SpringEquinox celebration at the Center. It’s an impressive testament to the high levelof enthusiasm and fraternal commitment that characterizes the local membershipfor this many people to choose to spend a Tuesday evening ushering in the newseason with their Sisters and Brothers (and it didn’t even seem vaguely crowded– O, the joys of space to spare!!). While such events admittedly constitute onlyone part of what we’re all about, they are nonetheless a very important part, andrepresent a significant and indispensable counterpoint to other focal areas ofwork such as Initiations, Gnostic Masses, and Classes. It’s a sentiment that wasperhaps best captured by the immortal words of our esteemed Grand SecretaryGeneral during NOTOCON 1999: “What brings us together? Our parties!!”Many thanks go to Fra. JRT for performing a powerful opening ritual; to Fra. JTfor organizing and overseeing the evening; to Sor. N for the luscious banquet; toFra. T and the other musicians for providing the beat; and to all the othermembers, guests, and children who worked on or attended this memorable event.News Briefs:Mass Invasion: A hearty helping of out-of-town visiting and new local Massteams in the past few months. Yes!!Mo’ MoE’s: And yet another full round of initiations at the Center: congrats tothe new Minervals, Firsts, Seconds, and Thirds.Class of the Star: Fra. G has illumined us all with his Astrological wit andunderstanding.Rite When You Can: Fra. M worked his directorial magic to bring us the Rite ofMercury. Sor. C provided invaluable assistance. And the cast and crew shone.Bravo!!Love is the law, love under will.Fraternally,Frater Diapason4

Letters to the EditorFrom Brother L-P- in Amon-Ra Lodge,Toronto, Canada.Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of theLaw personal content snipped I would like tomake a request concerning the followingessays, which I found while reading The Lionand the Serpent:“Hunter, Knight, and Priest: The SymbolicRole and Function of the Lance in theGnostic Mass” by Frater Mark Z. Oldknow“Analysis of the Gnostic Mass (parts I & II)”by Frater. V.I.T.R.I.O.L.Found these essays to be excellent and sovery useful. I’m in the process of gatheringtogether as much information pertaining tothe Gnostic Mass as possible and collectingit all into a guide for our clergy andcongregation here. The intent is to enrichour understanding and assimilation of theGnostic Mass, enabling us to bring it to lifein our performances. The ability to identifywith it and become it is very important Ithink. The inclusion of the above articleswould be very precious and useful so Irequest the authors’ permission to reproduceand include their respective essays into theguide. Nothing will be added or subtractedand the authors’ names will appear as wellas the name of the source wherein I foundthe articles. Thank you.Yours fraternally,L- PLove is the law, love under willThanks, man. I feel fortunate that we arebeginning to receive submissions fromoutside Portland for Lion and Serpent (e.g.Br. Mark Z. Oldknow is from Soul of theDesert out of Santa Fe, New Mexico). Suchsubmissions can only add to the quality ofthe journal.5

On the Nature of Anubisas Expressed in Atu XVIII: The Moon.by Frater Michael Osiris SnuffinIn the Moon card of Aleister Crowley’sThoth tarot deck we find the image ofAnubis in dual form guarding a path passingbetween two towers. While the image of twocanines guarding the path is found in theearliest occult versions of the Moon, theidentification of these figures with Anubishas its origins in the Philosophus ritual ofthe Golden Dawn:“Hierophant: TheDogs are the jackalsof the EgyptianANUBIS, guardingthe Gates of the Eastand of the West, shown by the twoTowersbetweenwhich lies the Path ofall the heavenlybodies ever rising inthe East and settingin the West.”1Thus, in order tounderstandthesignificance of thedual form of Anubisas he pertains to theMoon in the Thothdeck, we mustexamine the god inthe context of theGolden Dawn.I.The concept of dual forms of Anubis wasprobably gleaned by Golden Dawn foundersMathers and Westcott from the research ofEgyptologist E.A. Wallis Budge. Budge wasthe Keeper of the Egyptian Antiquities ofthe British Museum and the principle source1 Regardie, Israel. The Golden Dawn. 6th Ed. p1856of information on the subject of Egyptologyin his time. In Gods of the Egyptians, Budgewrites of“ The two jackal gods Anpu, or Anubis, and Ap-uat, who are only two forms of oneand the same god. Strictly speaking, Anpuis the ‘opener of the roads of the South, thepower of the two lands,’ and Apuat is the‘opener of the roadsto the North, thepower of heaven.’The two jackal godsare often depicted onstelae, where theysymbolize the twohalves of the year, and the night and theday sky, and theperiods of waxingand waning of thepowers of nature insummerandwinter.”2Budge associates thedual form with thenorth and southdirections. As theguardians of the“Gates of the Eastand West,” that is, thepath oriented on anEast-West axis, we find them placed in theirproper directional posts to the Trump.Budge also presents the dual forms ofAnubis as a pair of polarized opposites:earth and heaven, night and day, winter andsummer. In essence, they are darkness andlight, or expressed in terms of the Tree ofLife, severity and mercy.2 Budge, E.A. Wallis. Gods of the Egyptians. Vol.1. pp493-4.

“Hiereus: The sentinel is without the Portalof the Hall and has a Sword in his hand tokeep out intruders. It is his duty to preparethe Candidate.”4“Kerux: My place is within the Portal. Myduties are to see that the furniture of theHall is properly arranged at the Opening,to guard the inner side of the Portal, toadmit the Fratres and Sorores, and to watchover the reception of the Candidate; to leadall Mystic Circumnambulations carryingthe Lamp of my Office, and to make allreports and announcements.”5II.Within the framework of the Golden Dawn,Anubis’ duality is most clearly defined inthe Neophyte Ritual, where each of theofficers represents an Egyptian godform. The dual role of Anubis is expressed in thecommentary on the Neophyte ritual, the Z1 document:“The Kerux is the principal form of Anubis,as the Sentinel is the subsidiary form.“Kerux is ‘Anubis of the East’.“Sentinel is ‘Anubis of the West’.“The Kerux is the Herald, the Guardian andWatcher within the Temple, as the Sentinelis the Watcher without.”3The directions attributed to the dual formshave been reoriented to coincide with thepositions of these two officers within thetemple. The doorway to the temple is in thewest wall, with the Sentinel posted west ofthe door (outside the temple) and the Keruxposted east of the door (inside). In theNeophyte ritual, the dual forms of Anubisstand within the portal rather than on eitherside of it as pictured in the trump. The two officers reflect the polarity of thedual forms of Anubis as expressed aboveby Budge. The Sentinel represents darkness, for he is posted outside of the temple, andhe bears the sword of severity. The Keruxbears the lamp and wand of light, and he ismerciful in that he acts as a guide andadvocate for the Candidate (see below).Note that both officers are charged withguarding the Portal to the Neophyte temple. The role of Anubis as the guardian of thetemple is reflected in the Golden Dawn’sinterpretation of the 125th chapter of the4 Regardie, op cit. p118.5 Regardie, op cit. p119.6 “The ceremony of the 0 0 symbolically occursin the Hall of Judgment which is described in the125th chapter of the Egyptian Book of the Dead.Cicero, Chic and Sandra Tabitha Cicero. Selfinitiation into the Golden Dawn tradition. p4.The duties of the Sentinel and Kerux areexplained in the Opening of the Neophyteritual:3 Regardie, op cit. p341.7

Egyptian Book of the Dead, whichis depicted on the black pillar ofthe Neophyte temple. 6 A sublecture on the pillars within theFirst Knowledge Lecture explainsthe significance of the scene:“The 125th chapter is concernedwith the entry of an initiate intothe Hall of the Two Columns of Justice, andcommenced with a most beautiful andsymbolic description of Death, as a journeyfrom the barren wilderness of Earth, to theGlorious Land that lies beyond.“This chapter describes the introduction ofthe initiate into the Hall of Truth byANUBIS, who, having questioned theaspirant, receives from him an account ofhis initiation, and is satisfied by his rightto enter. He states that he has been takeninto the antechamber of the temple and thenstripped and blindfolded, he had to gropefor his entrance to the Hall, and havingfound it, he was reclothed and anointed inthe presence of the Initiated. He is thenasked for the Pass-words and demands thathis Soul should be weighed in the GreatBalance of the Hall of Truth, whereuponANUBIS again interrogates him concerningthe symbolism of the door of the Hall, andhis answers being found correct, ANUBISsays: ‘Pass on, thou knowest.’”7Thus we see that the Golden Dawn not onlyassociated Anubis with the Kerux andSentinel, but also placed an emphasis ontheir roles as a guardian who prepares theCandidate for admission to the temple.III.In our examination of the dual form ofAnubis, we have established the origin ofthe concept in the writings of Budge, itsidentification with the officers of Sentineland Kerux of the Neophyte ritual of theGolden Dawn, and the role of both theofficers and Anubis as the guardian of theportal of the temple. With this analysis inmind, let us now examine Aleister7 Regardie, op cit. p58.8Crowley’s commentary on the Moon fromThe Book of Thoth:“To what god shall we appeal for aid? It isAnubis, the watcher in the twilight, the godwho stands upon the threshold, the jackalgod of Khem, who stands in double formbetween the Ways. At his feet, on watch, waitthe jackals themselves, to devour thecarcasses of those who have not seen Him,or who have not known His Name.”8This interpretation contains many textualreferences that link it with the Neophyteritual. Here Anubis is referred to as theWatcher, just as the Sentinel is called theWatcher Without and the Kerux is calledthe Watcher Within. The Z-1 documentstates that “Enterer of the Threshold” is thename of the 0 0 grade of Neophyte, andhere Anubis is “the god who stands uponthe threshold.” Finally, it is the Sentinel andthe Kerux that stand in the double form ofAnubis between the Ways, that is, the portalof the Neophyte temple.Given the textual clues combined with theknowledge that Crowley was an initiate ofthe Golden Dawn, it follows that he includedtheir initiated interpretation of Anubis in hisversion of the Moon. Crowley takes thesymbolism one step further by placing actualimages of the god-form in the Neophyteritual.9IV.There is another important role of Anubisin the Golden Dawn that is pertinent to ourinvestigation of the Moon. It is Anubis wholeads the deceased through the darkness ofthe underworld to the kingdom of Osiris,“a journey from the barren wilderness ofEarth, to the Glorious Land which liesbeyond.” His role as guide is reflected inthe duties of the Kerux “to lead all MysticCircumnambulations” of the Officers and“to watch over the reception of theCandidate.”8 Crowley, Aleister. The Book of Thoth. p112.9 The god-form of Anubis is described in the Z-1document. See Regardie, op cit. p335.

In the Neophyte ritual, the Kerux leads thehoodwinkedcandidateashecircumnambulates the temple, making surethat he is properly purified and consecratedand taking him to the ordeals of the Westand of the East. After the climax of theritual, where the hoodwink is removed, theHierophant reveals the secret nature of theKerux to the Candidate:“In all thy wanderings in Darkness, theLamp of the Kerux went before thee, thoughit was not seen by thine eyes. It is the Symbolof the Light of the Hidden Knowledge.”10In the subsequent grades of Zelator andTheoricus, the Kerux uses his “HiddenKnowledge” to further act as guide andadvocate for the Candidate, leading theaspirant through the ordeals and oftenspeaking on his behalf in the temple.Crowley instructs us to appeal to Anubisfor aid in our journey of the path of theMoon, and we can find the nature of thataid documented in the Theoricus ritual:10 Regardie, op cit. p126“Hierophant: follow your Guide, Anubisthe Guardian, who leads you from thematerial to the spiritual.“Kerux: Anubis the Guardian said to theAspirant, ‘Let us enter the Presence of theLord of Truth. Arise and follow me.’”11In light of the demonstrated link betweenthe Thoth trump card and the Golden Dawninitiations, we can confidently state thatAnubis acts as both guardian and guide inthe Moon. That Anubis leads the aspiranttowards truth is important in the context ofthe Moon, for it is a glyph of darkness andillusion. Without Anubis, the traveler of thispath falls prey to the jackals that “devourthe carcasses of those who have not seenHim, or who have not known his Name.”But with the help of Anubis, the guardianand guide of the path, the aspirant may passthrough the ordeal of the Moon and into theglorious dawn of the following trump, theSun.11 Regardie, op cit. p1579

Excerpts from the FBI file of Jack Parsonsby Frater MickAlthough we are familiar with Jack Parsons as a leadinglight of Agape Lodge in Los Angeles in the 1940s, andauthor of the collection Freedom is a Two-EdgedSword1 , he was also one of the founding fathers ofAmerica’s rocket science program. Indeed, it is inconnection with this that the FBI, who assembled a 130page document on him, once investigated him. He wascharged with removing confidential documents fromHughes Aircraft Company, with a view to giving thesedocuments to the government of Israel. He was, however, found innocent of espionage.he was suspended from his employment in that he wasalleged to have associated with Communists but that in1949 he was cleared and rehired. The following are quotes from the FBI file of JackParsons, viewable under the Freedom of Information Act.Most of the file concerns Parsons’ technical career. However, it also mentions his association with the Churchof Thelema and OTO, and these are of great historicalinterest. This is the first mention of the OTO in Parson’s FBI file. While the rest of the file primarily consists of his allegedespionage, I shall quote relevant sections that deal withthe OTO or Thelema.Note that most of the material mentions the Church ofThelema, founded by Agape Lodge head Wilfred Smithin 1934, and that OTO per se is not as widely mentioned.I have omitted much material that is mere recapitulationof previous statements in the document. Note too thatmuch of the file is blackened out by the FBI prior torelease. Here then, are excerpts from the FBI file of Jack Parsons. All excerpts are in italics.File 65-9131Subject, on September 15 1950, removed certaindocuments pertaining to jet propulsion motors androcket propellants without authority from HughesAircraft Company, Culver City, California, his place ofemployment. He planned to submit this withemployment application through American TechniconSociety for employment in the country of Israel. There follows a statement by Parsons on his removal ofthe document, and plans for Israeli employment. Parsonsprepared this on September 27, 1950. Apart from givingexact details of his intentions, he stated that it was neverhis claim to harm the security of the United States, andthat he regretted his actions. There follows details of his past employment andpersonal activities. He advised that in 1948 while employed with the NorthAmerican Aviation Corporation, Inglewood, California,1 Parsons, Jack. Freedom is a Two-Edged Sword.Scottsdale: New Falcon/OTO.10Parsons advised that in 1941, while residing at 1003South Orange Grove, Pasadena, California, he was amember of a religious cult which was alleged to havebeen involved in immoral activities. He said that he isno longer connected with this group and has severedall relations with it. He described himself as being an“individualist.”A religious cult, believed to practice sexual perversion, was organized at the subject’s home at 1003 SouthOrange Grove, Pasadena, California, which wasreported subversive, and that the subject had beenquestioned regarding this organization on twooccasions but nothing of a subversive nature waslearned. This report further reflects that subject wasreported associated with one blackened out analleged Communist Party member. Parsons admitted that he subscribed to the DailyPeople’s World, a West Coast Communist Party organ,in 1938 and later joined the American Civil LibertiesUnion several complaints with regard to the activities in ahome at 1003 South Orange Grove Avenue, Pasadena, which, at the time, was leased in the name of PARSONS. blacked out some literature which indicated that atthese premises were held meetings of a cult which wentunder the name of the Church of Thelema. Descriptiveliterature indicates this cult broadly hinted at free love. blackened out had received several complaints of“strange goings on at this home,” and that he recalledat the time that it was a gathering place of perverts. blackened out the Church of Thelema, whichorganization was dedicated to spiritual advancementand improvement of self. He said a great many of theteachings and ideals of the Church of Thelema werebased on the teachings of ALEISTER CROWLEY ofLondon, England, an internationally known poet, andthat the organization was sometimes referred to asCrowleyism or Crowleyites. Also in 1943 subject was interviewed by Special Agents blackened out and blackened out at which time

Parsons stated that the Church of Thelema was a lodgeand fraternity as well as a church, and that they studiedphilosophy as well as religion and attempted to informthemselves concerning all types and kinds of religion. He further stated that the Church of Thelema was“dedicated to the freedom and liberty of the individual.”Parsons advised at the time that they were anticommunistic and anti-fascist. blackened out the Summer of 1940, he [aninformant, name blackened out] was approached by blackened out to attend a week-end party to be heldat 1003 South Orange Grove, Pasadena, California. blackened out that after his arrival at that addresshe learned that what he thought was a week-end partywas actually a meeting of a cult, known as “The Churchof Thelma.” (sic). During the course of the week-end blackened out initiated into the order, and stated thathe did not recall anything of the initiation proceedings, except that all the participants removed their clothesand were given robes. blackened out was apparentlydrugged and that he spent two days and two nights at1003 South Orange Grove, and that there were forty orfifty members of the cult. blackened out and that therewas the head of the organization blackened out oneW.T. Smith 1944, and that Smith is assisted by blackened out said that a girl named blackened out is said to be the concubine of the organization.2Although we can never learn the truth of this statement, the statement of the informant that he was drugged andthat he could not recall any of the initiation, seems highlydubious. Could it be possible that he used that as anexcuse to not betray details of the initiation? blackened out believed that Parsons wassomething of a “crack-pot” who was active in areligious cult in Pasadena, whose headquarters wereat his home at 10053 South Orange Grove Avenue. However, he stated that he had since been convincedthat Parsons was harmless and that he was somethingof a religious fanatic. He stated that he first became affiliated with theorganization approximately 3 years ago; that it wasentirely tolerant and was concerned with thebrotherhood of all mankind and that the organizationhad no violent aims whatsoever but was teaching byexample. He advised that he himself joined thisorganization because “it fulfills my religious needs”and that the organization was opposed to regimentation.100-189320-1LA File #: 100-17453Captioned: Church of ThelmaInternal Security – GChurch of Thelma4 was incorporated in Calif. 14, 1934, as a religious organization, by Wilford5 TalbotSmith, who styles himself as the high priest of the society.Total active membership is approximately twenty, andheadquarters of the organization are at 1003 SouthOrange Grove, Pasadena, Calif. The fundamentalprinciples of the Society are “Do what thou wilt shallbe the whole of the law”, and its purpose appears to bethe preservation of individual liberty and freedom activities of this organization are received from SirAllister Crowley of London, England. He [Parsons] advised that the Church of Thelma wasin fact a small organization, modeled very much on the“order of Oriental temples, an English society”, blackened out but that because of small size of thelocal organization, could not become an official branchof the temples They stated that the PARSONS are an odd or unusualpair in that they do not live by the commonly acceptedcodes of married life and are both very fascinated byanything unusual or morbid such as voodooism, cults, homosexuality, and religious practices that are“different”. Subject seems very much in love with hiswife but she is not at all affectionate and does not appearto return his affection. blackened out She is thedominating personality of the two and controls theactivities and thinking of the subject to a considerabledegree. It is the opinion blackened out if subject wereto have been involved in any way in any activities of aninternational espionage nature, it would have probablyhave been at the instigation of his wife.7[Much restating of material, then the following] Thereis also a man whose name is blackened out is aGerman Alien, and who is said to be in NYC organizingfor the Order. blackened out is at one time supposedto have been a professor in Berlin6 . Orders for the4 The use of ‘Thelma’ instead of ‘Thelema’ is a ratherembarrassing mistake that occurs throughout muchof the report.5 Smith’s first name was actually Wilfred, not Wilford. The Church of Thelma recruits as a fraternal orderunder this name and publishes a book called “The Bookof the Law” which book tears down everythingdemocracy stands for. The book preaches that whateverone desires to do is the proper thing to do.6 Karl Germer.7 This refers to Cameron, Jack’s second wife.Above the Gemmed AzureFrater Bacchus, 2000 Digital Art12

The Energetic Yoga of the Pentagram Ritualsby Frater ZygoatIt is my intention to share some of the everexpanding meaning and function of the PentagramRituals as they apply to energy cultivation. It hasbeen said that, properly understood, the Ritual ofthe Pentagram is the “Medicine of Metals andthe Stone of the Wise.” I do not claimunderstanding, but I have gathered someexperience in the practice of these ritual variationsas an integrated part of a larger energy cultivationprogram. The scope of thePentagramisinexhaustible and I canhope to shed but a tinyray of light upon itsMysteries.Let it first beunderstood that eachtime that we performthe Greater of LesserritualofthePentagram, with fullconsciousness, we recreate our world. Thefirst thing thatbecomes obviousabout this projectedworld is that it is aperfectly balancedmandala of theelements united byspirit. A quick glimpseat the opening of theChinese allegoricalclassic Monkey will demonstrate the universalityof some of this imagery. I will use looseparaphrase. The Great Mountain was acted upon andimpregnated by the wind, rain, and stone untilfrom it arose a stone egg. (Aleph, akasha, HoorPa-Kraat, the Stone.) From this egg arose amonkey (Beth, mercury, the Magician) who thenimmediately bowed in each of the four directions. As he did, a steely ray shot forth from his eyesand penetrated to the end of each direction. Thisis a beautiful version of the sequence of a force14arising from the center, then activating thequadrants of space with its consciousness. Clearly,we see the central, vertical dimension (mountainin this case) realizing itself to be the axis of itshorizontal domain. (“I am the axle of the wheeland the cube in the circle.”)To develop the idea of Pentagram Energetics, Iwill discuss each phase of the working in turn.Because these rituals have been coveredbeautifully by otherrecent works, I willfocus only on thoseaspects that pertainspecifically to thistheme. Before Idiscuss what happensin the ritual, I wouldlike first to discuss‘Where’.It is said that the LBRPis performed by theMagician standingupon the intersectionof the paths of Samekhand Pe. If we were toproject the Tree of Lifeas a microcosm overthe image of theeastern model of thesubtle anatomy, wecan learn much of thealchemical import ofthis process. To staysimple and focused, Iwill only mention the Central Channel, a meridianrunning through the core of the body andcorresponding to the Middle Pillar and theSushumna; the Prime-Yang meridian which runsfrom the coccyx, up the spine and through thebrain; and the Prime-Yin meridian which runsfrom the lower lip down the front of the body andto the perineum (Yesod). The Yin and Yangmeridians correspond to the fire and water of ourinternal alchemy, and are used as such in a processof circulation that is alluded to in the Art (orTemperance) card of Samekh.

I mention these for this reason: if you were toaccept the heart as Tiphareth, and the perineumas Yesod, the Central Channel connecting the twowould correspond exactly with Samekh. At thelevel slightly below the navel there is anothermeridian that circles the waist like a belt and iscalled the “belt meridian.” This correspondsanatomically to the microcosmic location of thepath of Pe. If you were to pinpoint the intersectionof these, you would discover the location of theDan Tien, or Lower Cauldron. This elixir field orOcean of Chi is the primary center of internalrefinement used within eastern alchemy. It is alsothe point of greatest balance between Yin andYang, fire and water, within the body. From amartial perspective, it is the center of gravity fromwhich one moves and in which one is grounded:the center of force. It now becomes clear why this position on theTree is internally significant, from the perspectiveof both the Warrior (Pe, the martial Pentagram)and the Alchemist (Samekh, the union of Sunand Moon). If one were to look at the Art card ofthe Book of Thoth, one would see the GoldenCauldron of the Dan Tien c

In the Moon card of Aleister Crowley's Thoth tarot deck we find the image of Anubis in dual form guarding a path passing between two towers. While the image of two canines guarding the path is found in the earliest occult versions of the Moon, the identification of these figures with Anubis has its origins in the Philosophus ritual of the .
