3Phase 1Fascinating Folks & Exciting EventsThe Great Pyramid of GizaThe Great Pyramid was built nearly four thousandyears ago! It was one of the Seven Wonders ofthe Ancient World because it was so impressivelyhuge, and it is the only Wonder of the AncientWorld still standing today. The Great Pyramid wasbuilt for an Egyptian Pharaoh named Khufu (alsoknown to the Greeks as “Cheops”).Khufu supervised the building of this pyramid, which was designed for the protection of hisremains when he died. Unfortunately for us—and for him—his body and all the riches buriedwith him were stolen despite his elaboratepreparations. The Great Pyramid weighs more than six milliontons. It is built of two million three hundred26 Ancient Civilizations & the Bible Activity Bookthousand stone blocks. If you can imagine, workmen would have been required to produceone of these blocks every two minutes eachday for twenty-three years in order to completethe pyramid during Khufu’s lifetime. Originally,it was four hundred and eighty-one feet tall, but during the Middle Ages, Arabs took thetop thirty feet of stone for use in buildings nearCairo. When the Pyramid was first built, it wascovered in gleaming white limestone and hadgold at the pinnacle. But today, most of thelimestone (and all of the gold) is missing. This stupendous architectural marvel was theworld’s tallest building for nearly three thousandyears. No wonder it was considered one of theSeven Wonders of the Ancient World. Amazing!
