It is painful that an emptytomb—our greatest cause for joy—isgreeted by an empty church today. Eventhough Jesus rose victorious from thegrave, He knew that His Church would have to sufferuntil the end of time. We are now in a time of suffering. But the one who waited patiently for Him andgreeted Him on that morning of victory waits for ustoo. So let us go to her, the Mother of God, our BlessedLady.I have shared this passage from St. John Henry Newman on many occasions. I am finding that there isa consoling application of it to our present circumstances. May you meditate on it with great fruit andfind some measure of peace, and may She strengthenus when the time comes for us to emerge from ourhomes and worship again in the House of Her Son!What shall bring you forward in the narrow way, if youlive in the world, but the thought and patronage ofMary? What shall seal your senses, what shall tranquillize your heart, when sights and sounds of danger arearound you, but Mary? What shall give you patienceand endurance, when you are wearied out with thelength of the conflict with evil, with the unceasingnecessity of precautions, with the irksomeness of observing them, with the tediousness of their repetition, with the strain upon your mind, with your forlorn andcheerless condition, but a loving communion with her!She will comfort you in your discouragements, solaceyou in your fatigues, raise you after your falls, rewardyou for your successes. She will show you her Son,your God and your all. When your spirit within you isexcited, or relaxed, or depressed, when it loses its balance, when it is restless and wayward, when it is sickof what it has, and hankers after what it has not, whenyour eye is solicited with evil and your mortal frametrembles under the shadow of the tempter, what willbring you to yourselves, to peace and to health, butthe cool breath of the Immaculate and the fragrance ofthe Rose of Sharon?"-St. John Henry Newman, Discourses to Mixed CongregationsYours in Christ,2READINGS THIS WEEKSUNDAY:Acts 10:34a, 37-43/Ps 118:1-2, 16-17,22-23 [24]/Col 3:1-4 or 1 Cor 5:6b-8/Jn20:1-9 or Mt 28:1-10MONDAY:Acts 2:14, 22-33/Ps 16:1-2a and 5, 7-8,9-10, 11 [1]/Mt 28:8-15TUESDAY:Acts 2:36-41/Ps 33:4-5, 18-19, 20 and 22[5b]/Jn 20:11-18WEDNESDAY: Acts 3:1-10/Ps 105:1-2, 3-4, 6-7, 8-9[3b]/Lk 24:13-35THURSDAY: Acts 3:11-26/Ps 8:2ab and 5, 6-7, 8-9[2ab]/Lk 24:35-48FRIDAY:Acts 4:1-12/Ps 118: 1-2 and 4, 22-24, 2527a [22]/Jn 21:1-14SATURDAY:Acts 4:13-21/Ps 118:1 and 14-15ab, 1618, 19-21 [21a]/Mk 16:9-15SUNDAY:Acts 2:42-47/Ps 118:2-4, 13-15, 22-24[1]/1 Pt 1:3-9/Jn 20:19-31APRIL 12, 2020 EASTER SUNDAY
