Dear Brothers and Sisters,As we begin this new academic year, I wish to express myadmiration and thanks to all who have made our return to ourparish school and catechism program so seamless. I have beeninspired by the tireless efforts in preparing classroom space, creating our new atrium for the Catechism of the GoodShepherd, meetings, developing lesson plans and doing it allselflessly and in love and service to our children and youngpeople. None of the coordination of preparing theinfrastructure would be possible without the hard work anddedication of Amador and Gary, Sandy Edens, Elvira andKristin, Cathy, Stephanie, Tony and Debbie, the leadership ofJudy, Marc and Catie, Leigh Masi and our preschoolcommunity and the many, many volunteer catechists andschool parents and staff who together make ours a communityof faith, learning, hope and love. Many thanks to all who made our Mass of the Holy Spirit awonderful way to begin the school year. I am most grateful toTony Eiras, Cathy Yee, Meaghan Brennan and those whoprepared our excellent lectors and youth singers. BishopBarber offered us a very inspirational homily and twopowerful points he made worth repeating. He spoke ofattending a Christmas party in the East Bay attended by 500prominent guests. He met judges, congressmen, mayors andowners of the major Bay Area sports teams. The mostinfluential person he met was Carmelita, the housekeeper ofthe hosts. Influential because for the past 25 years she hasbeen teaching a First Holy Communion class at St. Peter’sChurch in Pittsburg. Bishop Barber spoke about a little-knownfact: the late basketball star Kobe Bryant was a devoutCatholic who regularly attended Mass with his family. On theday of his death, he and his daughter Gianna had attendedMass and received Holy Communion at Our Lady of theAngels Church in Newport Beach. Bishop Barber concludedhis excellent homily with this thought: “That’s why we have aCatholic school. That’s why you should enroll your childrenthere: to learn the lessons that will not only benefit you in thislife but open the doors for you to eternal life.” Thank you,Bishop, for gracing us with your presence and offering wordsof inspiration and hope to our St. Pius community. The second reading from Saint James is a wonderful invitationto meditate and reflect upon the reality that God is the giverof every good gift and we have an opportunity to share thosegifts with others. St. James writes, “Be doers of the word andnot hearers only.” This call to action summons us to a living, tangible faith, predicated upon a strong prayer life and thenfollowed up by good deeds. “Faith in action” is a reflection onthe dual mission of Christian discipleship. Before we can act, therefore, there must be a time of quiet reflection so the wordof God can be transcribed upon our hearts. The final words oftoday’s readings help us to remember the essential aspects ofour Christian religious experience: “ to care for orphans andwidows in their affliction and to keep oneself unstained by theworld.”Today’s Gospel from Mark reminds me of a conversation Irecently had with someone whom I had met for the first time.I was returning from an anointing of the sick at KaiserRedwood City. As I was leaving the hospital, a young womancame up to me and inquired as to whether I was priest. Ireplied affirmatively and she asked if I had a few minutes tospeak. We sat down and she began to explain she was raisedCatholic in a very devout family in Upstate New York.Attending Catholic schools growing up, she had a positiveexperience.(continued on page 6)from the pastorQueridos hermanos y hermanas:Al comenzar este nuevo año académico, deseo expresar miadmiración y agradecimiento a todos los que han hecho quenuestro regreso a nuestra escuela parroquial y programa decatecismo sea tan fluido. 6)

prayer and worshipCatechetical SundayCatechetical Sunday is a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the role that eachperson plays, by virtue of Baptism, in handing on the faith and being a witness tothe Gospel. This year, the Church celebrates Catechetical Sunday on September19, but here at St. Pius we will celebrate on September 12.Those who our parish community has designated to serve as catechists will be called forth to becommissioned for their ministry and our Faith Formation students will be blessed.Welcome Bishop Thomas DalyBishop of SpokaneCelebrant for our St. Pius Church70th Anniversary MassSunday, October 3, 2021 at 10:30 amRosary for VocationsTuesday, August 31, 2021 6:00 pmJoin us in churchAs you pray and meditate on the mysteries, please remember to pray for thosewho hear God’s call to service in the Church as priests, deacons, bishops, consecrated men and women and holy husbands and wives. from the pastor (continued)She moved West to San Francisco after college and at somepoint experienced personal trauma. This woman, who wasvery soft-spoken, told of having spoken with a priest duringthis difficult time and having been judged and not supported. She walked away from the Church and kept walking. Recently,a close friend of hers committed suicide and a priest friend ofthe family visited his parents’ home. She said the priest wascompassionate, understanding, and empathetic to theirsuffering. This chance encounter with this priest helped torestore her faith and to see the human side of the Church. We sometimes forget that the Church is a human institutionwith human beings with failings who lead and serve her.Mark’s Gospel helps to remind us that yes, there are traditionsand beliefs of the Church which we practice and are importantto the truth of our Catholic identity. There is such majesty andmystery to our expression of the divine in our liturgies and ourevangelization of the Good News. We can too easily lose sightof the affective dimension of our call; that is, to practice thefaith and proclaim the truth in a spirit of true humility andopenness when encountering another human being. Ourapproach makes all the difference. Literally! Please continue to be generous in your support of ouractivities as we celebrate our platinum jubilee - 70 yearsas a parish family. Please support our silent auction andstay tuned for details about our raffle, Saturday October2nd “pick up” dinner and other activities. Thanks asalways for your generosity and commitment to St. Pius!I will be away from August 30th through September 8th servingas a volunteer during a Knights of Malta pilgrimage toLourdes, France. I am grateful for the privilege to serve thesick during this time, to pray with and for them. I am eternallygrateful to the Knights and Dames of Malta who once selectedTina Zanoni and Pam Nerenz to go on pilgrimage to thisMarian shrine. Their experiences were life changing and I lookforward to remembering them during this time of prayer andservice. Father Maurice will be supported by the priests of St.Patrick Seminary and I am grateful to Father Mark Dohertyfor assisting during these days. Please know you will all be inmy thoughts and prayers during this time, as always. In light of the words of today’s Scriptures, I wanted to sharethis reflection from Gaudium et spes, Pastoral Constitution on theChurch in the Modern World:“The blessings of human dignity, brotherly communion andfreedom - all the good fruits on earth of man’s co-operationwith nature in the Spirit of the Lord and according to hiscommand - will be found again in the world to come, butpurified of all stain, resplendent and transfigured, when Christhands over to the Father an eternal and everlasting kingdom:‘a kingdom of truth and life, a kingdom of holiness and grace,a kingdom of justice, love and peace.’ On this earth thekingdom is already present in sign; when theLord comes it will reach its completion.”Se mudó al oeste de San Francisco después de la universidad yen algún momento experimentó un trauma personal.
