Gillian Skeer4What attributes make a great coach? Results! A great coach will deliver on what they promise and theclient can expect to experience profound improvements in their life.A great coach will deliver great results and help the client reach theirgoals. They’ll give the client the value they seek, but even more thanthat, they’ll give them more than they expect. I go the extra mile formy clients.Every person has greatness within them. As a Master Coach NLPmy role is to help my clients realise and unleash their greatness –their personal and professional greatness. Excellence in coachingis about unlocking clients’ potential, allowing them to have theirbreakthroughs, those ‘ah-ha’ moments, taking them on a journey thatenables them to become highly effective and empowered individuals.I believe a great coach has to have the unlimited mindset that anythingis truly possible; it’s about understanding the client, their model ofthe world and their definition of success. A great coach makes nojudgment upon any client; they know the client has the resourceswithin them that just need developing to achieve the greatness theywant to achieve. The needs of the client are paramount. A great coach will giveexcellent service and excellent value. Only the client can determinewhat is of value to them; so ask them: What is it worth to them tohave outstanding success in their life? What is it worth to them tohave a massive breakthrough; to release a limiting belief that’s beenholding them back for years? What is it worth to them to be ableto change the habits and patterns of a lifetime that have kept themtrapped in a place that doesn’t serve them? What is it worth to them?Anyone wanting to stretch and grow their own potential needs toevidence those same qualities in the coach they enlist; they need tosee in their coach someone who’s committed to lifelong learning andgrowth for themselves, so they are walking the talk.A great coach will have broad and deep life experience; someonewho’s put themselves out there and stretched themselves; whoknows the highs and lows of life; who understands what it means toface their fears; who has overcome their own limiting beliefs; who hasmoved beyond thinking they might not be good enough. When youwww.MillionaireCoachBook.com.au

5Chapter 1: The Change Agentquestion a great coach, they always have their own story to tell andthis can only enrich their ability to support somebody else throughtheir issues.A great coach has great listening skills; their job is to hear what isgoing on at all levels, to interpret the language patterns of the client,to note the blockages that are there and where their focus is. Thesingle most important communication skill is reflective listening; agreat coach must be a great reflective listener. This means being ableto reflect a client’s problem back to them in a way that demonstratesa clear understanding and respect for what they are saying, andallows the client to work through their problem in their own mind.A great coach will have great sensory acuity; they will be able to seeand read eye pattern movements, changes in expression, shifts inbody posture, all these subtle things are indicators for what’s goingon at an unconscious level.A great coach is totally flexible; as every client is uniquely different,a great coach will have total flexibility in terms of their thinking, theirlanguage and their ability to build rapport with their client. And, of course, a great coach will have an exceptional toolbox ofcutting-edge skills and techniques to offer the client as part of theirservice. It’s not only about using the techniques to help the clientin the moment, but it’s also about showing the client how to applythe techniques beyond the coaching experience. A great coachenables clients to be fully resourced and fully empowered with tools, techniques, knowledge and experience to self-manage and keep theirown momentum going. How would you describe your coaching style?I am committed to providing exceptional client service and an overallpositive experience; I help my clients achieve outstanding results; Ibelieve in giving my absolute best and sharing my greatest learningsso that my clients can achieve the success in life that they want.It is about empowering others so that they become fully resourcefulto face future challenges.I’m 100 per cent committed, in the moment, to my client. I take myrole in their process very seriously. At the same time, I make the

Gillian Skeer6coaching journey fun, uplifting, interesting, challenging, motivatingand inspiring – and I encourage my clients to celebrate their success.Moving beyond the immediate coaching process I maintain contactwith my clients so that our connection continues and they know I’mavailable if they have any future coaching needs. I build a communitythat keeps growing so there are more and more empowered peopleout there living the life that they want. They’re regularly connected toon-going positive reinforcement, which allows them to maintain themomentum of their own journey.I continuously look at how I can perfect my coaching craft – this isongoing. I’m dedicated to life-long learning and that’s what excitesme about the nature of coaching, the nature of the work that I do; Icontinue to enhance and develop my skills to help grow people andthose experiences continue to grow me.What are the things that inspire you?You know, there is a plethora of information and inspiration out thereand I never tire of absorbing the wisdom.I’ve been inspired by the motivational gurus and high-achievers, bygreat leaders and teachers. And I’ve also been inspired by peopleunknown to me who have had a profound effect on my life simply byour paths crossing.A lot of my inspiration comes from that which is right in front of me,from the people that I see every day in my life – my friends, my family,my networks, my clients; each of them has something to share, astory to tell; and, because we can only live one life at a time, isn’t itinspiring to listen and learn from other people’s life experiences?Travel inspires me and is a great passion of mine. One of my goalsis for the number of countries I’ve visited to be equal to, or greaterthan, the number of years I have been alive: I’m ahead of the count sofar and it’s always exciting to plan the next journey. I have travelled tomany exotic locations and some challenging places in the world, andI love the cultural and environmental diversity and all the inspirationthat travelling presents. Some of my greatest learnings have comefrom travel and there is always inspiration to be found in otherpeople’s stories.www.MillionaireCoachBook.com.au

7Chapter 1: The Change AgentSome years ago I travelled to the centre of Brazil to meet my WorldVision sponsor child, a little girl named Josianne, about 11 years old.She had been orphaned along with her twin sister when her motherhad been shot and killed in front of her; she’d had a really hard startin life and her community was very poor. When I ventured to this extremely remote part of Brazil – a journeywhich began in Rio de Janeiro, took two plane flights followed byseveral hours travelling by car – I found a community that was sofull of love and support for each other and who were so honoured tohave me there as their guest. The experience had a profound effecton my life, seeing these genuinely gracious people who had so little, living in gratitude and their lives so rich in other ways; I was greatlyhumbled. It was a huge inspiration to me and remains one of the mostmemorable events in my life.I continue my support of the World Vision child sponsorship program, along with other worthy organisations, including an orphanage inBali. I like to support and promote the inspirational work that peopleare doing to enrich and empower the lives of others. This includesthe support of youth leadership and development programs, healthresearch, awareness and support organisations and conservationorganisations. There are so many inspirational people doingremarkable work and accomplishing great things.I have my family to thank for some of my earlier inspiration in life;I was always encouraged to have a go, to be resourceful, to put inthe effort and enjoy the rewards. I was well provided for, had a goodeducation, lots of fun times with family and friends and many travelexperiences. I truly understood the value of such opportunities andfor them I am immensely grateful. When I was a young girl my Dad used to say to me, ‘Gill, you’ve gotthe ball at your feet, all you have to do is kick it.’ It really is a greatmetaphor when I think about it, and you know, ever since he told methat, I’ve never stopped kicking that ball; it was a great little piece ofadvice early on in my life that has made all the difference.Have any books or films been critical to your personal success? My bookshelves are brimming with motivational and personaldevelopment books; the favourites that come to mind are The

Gillian Skeer8Greatest Miracle in the World by Og Mandino, Rich Dad Poor Dad byRobert Kiyosaki, The Power of Positive Thinking by Norman VincentPeale, You’ll See it When You Believe it by Dr Wayne W Dyer, Thinkand Grow Rich by Napoleon Hill, The Game of Life and The Secret Doorto Success by Florence Scovel Shinn and Jonathon Livingston Seagullby Richard Bach. There also some interesting DVDs like The Secret,Beyond Belief and What the Bleep ?; as well I’m an avid watcher ofinspirational YouTube clips. They have challenged my thinking in some way and have shown methat overcoming obstacles, fine-tuning my way of thinking, beingauthentic and focusing on what I want to achieve, brings success.I continue to immerse myself in stories of great achievements, ofovercoming adversity and positive mindsets. Modelling excellence inmindset and behaviour is a sure way to success.‘Whether you think you can, or you think youcan’t, you are right’. Henry FordHow can you achieve change? We all have our unique operating and behavioural strategies, ourindividual ‘maps’ of how we perceive the world around us, that wedevelop throughout our lives; they include our beliefs, attitudes, values and experiences. Some of these strategies are effective, butwe might find that some of our thinking and behaviours that servedus in the past may no longer serve us in the now, or for the future.Powerful and effective change comes from changing the model ofour world. Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) allows us to see howour thinking and language patterns affect our internal programming, thus our behaviour. NLP principles can guide us through change asthey are incredibly effective in enabling us to let go of old behaviourpatterns and change beliefs and behaviours. There are a range of NLPwww.MillionaireCoachBook.com.au

9Chapter 1: The Change Agenttechniques that are used, depending on the nature of the problem; soNLP provides the opportunity for real and lasting change. To achieve change and success it is vital to have a purpose or adesired outcome; to establish where you are now in life and whereyou want to be in the future. Many people don’t consciously plan forwhat they want in the future and tend to meander aimlessly throughlife. So, know your outcome: What is it that you really, really want toachieve? What are you passionate about? What is it in life that’simportant to you? It might be a personal thing; it might be to improveyour relationship; it might be to have a better career; it might be toimprove your financial situation; it might be to have more spare timeon your hands. Whatever it is for you, be very clear and very specificabout what it is you want – what is success to you? The reality is, ifyou don’t have a clear idea of what you want, then how will you knowwhen you get it.Be precise about that outcome and set some goals around it:Specifically, what you want? When do you want to achieve it by?What will be involved? What measures will you use to determine thatyou’ve reached your outcome?Ensure your goals are positively defined and your thinking andactions are aligned. If you change your thinking, you change yourbehaviour and, thereby you will change your result; so, take actionwith both your thinking and with your behaviour.Henry Ford said, ‘Whether you think you can or you think you can’t,you are right’. So, thinking that you can do something will propel youto success; thinking that you can’t do something will surely stop you.Focus in the direction you want to go, to really move toward whatyou desire. Taking action in the direction of the goal is a ‘towards’action. Make sure that your thinking, language and behaviours arefully consistent with and focused on what you want to achieve. If you were to say, for example, ‘I don’t like to feel unhealthy’, or ‘Idon’t want to be struggling financially’, these statements aren’treally moving you ‘towards’ your goal. What you’re actually doingis focusing on what you currently have, or don’t want. Change yourlanguage; make your language specific and appropriate to what

Gillian Skeer10you want to move ‘towards’. Positive ‘towards’ reframes of thesestatements might be, ‘I love that I am always feeling healthy and well’,and ‘I consistently attract success and wealth into my life’.Importantly, take action to effect the change you desire; withoutaction, there can be no change. Remember, nothing comes withoutsome form of effort, so be prepared to put in the work and be diligent. You just might find that the change you’re after is not as difficult toacquire as you once may have thought; it may simply be a process ofchanging the way you think. On the road to success, how can you keep on improving?A really important factor to ongoing success is having behaviouralflexibility. There’s a great saying that goes, ‘If you always do whatyou’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got’. That’sso true isn’t it?If you were to continue to do the same thing the same way all thetime, do you think you’d be on the fast-track or the slow track tosuccess? If you have a lot of behavioural flexibility and you canadapt and change to different situations; you can expand your mind, expand your thinking, expand your performance, be flexible in howyou communicate and behave – don’t you think you might actuallyget a better result? The Law of Requisite Variety, also known as the first law of cybernetics, says that the person with the most flexibility of behaviour has thebest chance of getting the best results; so, if you’re not getting theresults that you want, try doing something different. It is said thatThomas Edison had more than 1000 attempts before he invented alight bulb that would actually work – fortunately for us he kept trying. You see, Edison knew that success was just over the horizon; he knewdefinitively there were hundreds of ways that an electric light bulbwouldn’t work; yet ultimately he knew that he would eventually getone that would work. Keep adapting what you do until you get theresult that you want.Isn’t it interesting, tha
