Quick Review Don’t let changing science drive your understanding of theunchanging Word of GodYou must be consistent in your interpretation of the Word of GodGod created the universe and earthThe universe had a beginning Big Bang requires 95% of matter and energy in the universe to be darkmatter and dark energy Big Bang is an explanation for the perceived expansion of the universe Maximum reliable distance measurements are about 500 light years Moses wrote Genesis as 11 separate “accounts”Hebrews 11:3 – “By faith we understand that the universewas formed at God's command, so that what is seen wasnot made out of what was visible.”

The First Creation Dayoccurred sometime after the Beginning (Gen. 1:1-2).God summoned the light to shine out of the darknesson His vantage point on earth (Gen. 1:2-3). God sawthat the light was useful in its purpose and thus endedthe indefinite period of time He called Day One forour purposes.

Half-way through theearth's 4.6 billion year history there arosethrough this watery surface a singlecontinent or land mass. Over time, thedynamics of plate tectonics, and other naturalprocesses, resulted in the single continentseparating into the multiple continents we seetoday, along with mountains, valleys, etc.

Introduction: Why is Genesis 1important? The Bible claims to be truth. If the Bible does not represent truth, or if those opposed to theteachings of Christianity can show that the Bible includes errors, theclaims of Christianity are impaired. If a group interprets the Bible in a manner different than that whichthe Hebrew text says, the truth claim of the Bible is impaired. For evangelism, the issue is clear. Non-believers who decide toexplore the Bible and the claims of Christ will typically start with thefirst page of the Bible. If the opponents of Christianity can impugn thetruthfulness of the Bible on the first page, the claims of Christ maynever be seriously considered. See Psalm 104 – “The Creation Psalm” Next week – the earth
