Issue #52The Interfaith Youth Council of Orange CountyFaith Forum & Festival 2016by IYCOC@NVPTweetsAll high school age faith groups are invited tocome and join with 150 to 175 other highschool students from various faith traditionsto participate in the Interfaith Youth Councilof Orange County‘s 12th Annual InterfaithYouth Forum on March 13th, 2016 11:30am3:00pm(High School Students), followed byour Faith Festival 3:00pm-5:00pm (All arewelcome)The purpose of this Interfaith Youth Forum isto bring together young people from diverseethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds, and to engage them in dialogue. Truedialogue is a conversation on a commonsubject between two or more persons ofdiffering points of view and/or backgrounds. This dialogue’s purpose is two-fold: first, foreach participant to learn from the other sothat he or she can understand and grow;second, for each participating adult to learnfrom the young what they think, what theirconcerns are, and how they deal withdiffering points of view. We feel that thiscommitment to dialogue will affectrelationships in a constructive way in ourplaces of worship and in our community. The forum itself involves having eight highschool-age kids and one adult youth leaderaround each table to discuss a commonquestion. Our intent is to make each discussion groupas religiously diverse as possible. Our youthleaders act as facilitators, but it is stressedthat it is the students we want to hear from. The facilitator is there only to encourage thedialogue. The forum will be followed by the Faithfestival where families of the participants arewelcomed to join. Issue #53Save Syrian Children Now:Musical FundraiserbyNewport Mesa Irvine Interfaith CouncilA remote Syrian refugee camp in the Beq'aaValley in Lebanon is in desperate need ofheating fuel and small heaters. The winter isbitterly cold and many of these 600 people-including a high proportion of young children-have lost limbs or even died because of thecold. They are living in plastic UN tents in thesnow, but it became so difficult for the UNand other agencies to reach this camp thatthey all have simply stopped serving them.A young woman in Lebanon began collectingdonations to buy heating fuel for theserefugees. Every time she collected enough, she'd fill her vehicle with bottles of fuel andmake the treacherous drive through theValley. As word about her efforts spread overthe past year, she established anorganization, Solidarity Through Humanity, and she is in the process of registering as a501(c)(3) in the US. But the need for heat isimmediate and when we heard about hercourageous efforts, we wanted to help. Weare holding an emergency fundraiser forheating fuel, and our donations will be wireddirectly to her. She will then purchase heatingfuel and deliver it right to the camp.It only costs about 50 to provide heatingfuel for a family for one month. This is atotally grassroots, zero-overhead project. Youcan provide warmth to a struggling refugeefamily now. Please attend our fundraiser onSaturday,February 20, 2016from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at:Fellowship HallSt. Mark Presbyterian Church2200 San Joaquin Hills RoadNewport Beach, CA 92660We'll show a video about the camp, thenenjoy a delicious light dinner and an eveningof live music!
