IntroductionWe have few bibliographies of Sikhism which are comprehensive and updated. Printedbibliographies serve the purpose only upto the date of their publication. Writers found it difficult toupdate them.In the present scenario with the coming of Internet there is no such problem of updating. Inthis way this bibliography will be first of its kind which will be regularly updated. An attempt has been made to prepare a bibliography of books written in English at any timefocusing on the period 1469-1849 AD i.e. from Guru Nanak Dev to Maharaja Ranjit Singh. Wehave tried to cover all the books whether available in Bhai Gurdas Central Library, Guru NanakDev University, Amritsar (Pb.) or available or published at any place in the world.Sikhism, the youngest of the major world religions, strictly monotheistic in its fundamentalbelief, was born in the Punjab. Sikhism is not only a philosophical system but is also a distinctcultural pattern, a way of life signified by the term Sikh Panth. In Punjabi the term is ‘sikkh’usually transliterated sikh. “Sikh” now almost universally denotes a follower of Guru Nanak, thefounder of Sikhism.According to Guru Nanak, God is One, a single Supreme Reality. He is the creator, preserver, destroyer and recreator of material existence, but He Himself is uncreated, unborn andself-existent. In fact the Creator is not different from His creation but is one with it. All materialexistence emanates from Him and is the manifestation of His Self. This bibliography consists of almost 2100 books. We have put this bibliography on the Netfor free access to all the users throughout the world. Unlike the previous printed bibliographiescovering not more than three hundred to five hundred entries, which were useful to a limited extent, this will be a comprehensive and ever useful.A large number of books in English have been written on Sikhism. However, the maximumnumber of books are on Guru Nanak and his teachings. In this bibliography the books have beencovered from Guru Nanak to Maharaja Ranjit Singh.Bibliography covers books in English on Sikh Gurus, Sikh Scriptures, Gurbani, Bhagats,Saints; Sikh Philosophy, Sikh Code of Conduct, Institutions and Ceremonies, Sikh Symbols, SikhShrines, Golden Temple; misl period, Sikh martyrs; Maharaja Ranjit Singh and his descendants. We have planned to update this bibliography bi-annually. In this way this bibliography willbe first of its kind in the world.2

I am thankful to those staff members who have tried their best to prepare it. My thanks arealso due to our worthy Vice-Chancellor Prof. (Dr) A. S. Brar who has always appreciated theinnovative efforts of the University Library.I hope that this bibliography will prove very useful to students, researchers, facultymembers, scholars and even layman.(Dr. H. S. Chopra)Ph. D. (His); Ph. D. (Lib. & Inf. Sc.)University Librarian3

How to consult the BibliographyAn attempt has been made to cover almost all the books relating to Sikhism, Sikh History,Sikh Philosophy, Sikh Scriptures etc even then some books might have not been covered. As thisbibliography will be regularly updated bi-annually therefore we assume its completeness in allrespects. We have included different editions of the books if the publishers is different and date ofpublishing is different.Although an efforts has been made to present correct information as well as spelling yetthere can be some omissions.*s.n.s.l.pt., pts.rev.n.d.ed.comp.tr.It denotes the book is not available in Guru Nanak Dev University.no name (of publisher)no place (of publication)partrevisedno dateeditorcompilertranslatorThis bibliography will be in .PDF format which can be downloaded from the universitywebsite i.e. www.gndu.ac.inThe format of the entry will be as following:Subject HeadingAuthor/Editor/Translator/CompilerTitle; Sub-title. each subsequent statement of responsibility.
