Founded bya group of 38 leading dermatologists, theFoundation has depended heavily on thevoluntary input of this professional group,many of whom continue to work in thevarious Foundation treatment clinics forup to a day a week without charging fortheir services.As one of Australia’s leading centres forskin disease research and treatment, weconduct regular trials, collect clinical dataand support projects in other dermatologycentres. Our ongoing trials enable us tomake significant advancements in skindisease treatments and patient care. Message from the President“A future full of promise”(A/Prof and Chairman Peter Foley, January 2010)What a tumultuous andeventful 12 months.Dramatic changes havebeen made and the futurelooks extremely bright.During the course of 2009, theCommittee of Managementof the Skin and CancerFoundation undertooka strategic review of theorganisation. Facilitated byStephen Emmett of Matrixon Board, the Committee,along with invited seniordermatologists and membersof the management team,reflected upon and discussedthe mission, vision andvalues of the Foundation,before setting in place aframework to achieve aset of high level strategicobjectives over the next fiveyears. This planning processculminated in a restructureof the Skin and CancerFoundation governancemodel and reviewed theroles and responsibilities of theCommittee of Management.ValuesKey words to describe thevalues of the Foundationinclude ownership,enjoyment, integrity, reliable,ethical, capable, state-of-theart, and professionalism.It was determined that moreneeded to be done withinthe organisation at all levelsto ensure these values werein practice.A number of importantstrategic priorities wereidentified. The three priorityareas were:1. Review the governancemodel and structure of theorganisation.2. Review the membership ofthe Committee to providecritical skills that addressthe organisational needs(legal, financial, strategic,and technical).3. Develop and implementpolicies that addressorganisational risk anddetail operational aspectsof the organisation.A restructure of seniormanagement has seen theappointment of an Executive4 SkinSkin alAnnualReportReport2009-201020092 10Director, Mr Chris Arnold,a Medical Director, A/ProfChris Baker and a ResearchDirector, A/Prof Peter Foley also responsible for education.Following on from thestrategic review, anextraordinary meeting washeld on April 21 2010. Sixresolutions were passedunanimously, resulting in arevision of our Statementof Purposes and Rules. TheFoundation now includes in itsconstitution a power to tradepursuant to Section 51 of theAssociations IncorporationsAct. The Departmentof Consumer Affairs hasapproved of this change.The Committee ofManagement is nowreferred to as the Boardof Management. As aconsequence committeesthat report directly to theBoard have been establishedwith a commonly usedcorporate structure beingdeveloped. The numberof directors on the Boardhas been increasedto a maximum of 12.Dermatologists are stillrequired to fill the majority ofpositions and at any meetinga majority of dermatologistsare required for a quorum.We have been privilegedto welcome to the Board,Mr Patrick Burroughs and MsJacqueline Phillips. Patrickhas a long term involvementin the finance industry beinga former senior audit partnerat KPMG and a Fellow ofthe Institute of CharteredAccountants. Boardmemberships include beingcurrently a non-executivedirector of the RoyalChildren’s Hospital board withduties as chair of the boardaudit and investmentcommittees. JacPhillips has many yearsof marketing, peoplemanagement andbusiness developmentexperience. Currentlya senior marketingmanager at ANZPrivate Banking, Jachas been extremelyactive already on ourbusiness developmentand marketing side.Other ‘new’ memberson this year’s Board,following last year’sAGM, are A/ProfRosemary Nixon andDr Edward Upjohn.Both make a return,Rosemary after ahiatus of several years andEdward after his time in theUnited States. Dr MargueriteByrne replaced Hugh Robertsas the registrar representative.Late 2009 saw the retirementsof Doctors Alvin Chongand Mignon Moyle fromthe Board/Committee ofManagement. We hopethat both will return as theirworkloads lighten. Both Alvinand Mignon remain active atthe Foundation on the clinicalside at their respective clinics,organ transplant dermatologyand radiotherapy. Mignon hasalso been involved with theGovernance Subcommittee.I would this time like to thankMignon, Alvin and Hugh fortheir valuable contribution tothe Board.It is now two years since theFoundation moved to itsstate-of-the-art facilities at 80Drummond Street. We haveseen considerable changeduring this time as we expandinto our current facilities.Some of the changes seeninclude the development andimplementation of a numberof committees answeringIt wasdeterminedthat moreneeded tobe donewithin theorganisationat all levelsto the Board including aGovernance Committee,Finance Subcommittee,Finance Committee, Quality &Credentialing Committee andDevelopment Committee.The end of 2009 saw thedeparture of Joe Mercuri,Foundation/BusinessManager, after close to fiveyears of dedicated service.Brought on at a time offinancially troubled watersand initially employed on athree-month contract, Joerighted the ship and helpedus steer onto our currentcourse. He spearheadedthe transition from ourprevious long-term home at95 Rathdowne Street to ournew state-of-the-art facilitiesat 80 Drummond Street. Iwould like to personally andpublically thank Joe for thetime and effort employedinto sorting our finances andhis contribution over his termof office.With the organisationalrestructure we were fortunateto snap up our ExecutiveDirector, Chris Arnold, totake on the senior executivemanagement role.Chris’s backgroundincludes terms ofoffice as ChiefExecutive Officer ofa financial servicesgroup, two midtier law firms, anda group of privatehospitals. Prior to this,Chris was deputy,and then acting,CEO of the RoyalChildren’s Hospital.He also has yearsof experienceon the Boardof PhilanthropyAustralia andthe Council ofLeadership Victoria.The changeswe have seen since hecommenced have beenenormous. The ExecutiveDirector meets regularly withthe Medical and ResearchDirectors to ensure a smoothrunning of the Foundationand a more informedapproach to major decisions.In June, the Foundation heldits inaugural recognition ofspecial service to theFoundation awards eveningat the National Gallery ofVictoria. At this event, DrNicholas Downes, a foundingmember of the Foundationand Oral Mucosa ClinicSkin andSkinCancerand rtReport2009-20102009-2010 5

stalwart, and Ms BarbaraAshton, long-term member ofour nursing team, werehonoured. The Foundationalso held our annual Friends ofthe Foundation breakfast withMr Ross Oakley, CEO of theAustralian Football Leaguegiving the keynote address.Mr Oakley spoke about hisrole leading the AFLCommission for 10 yearsduring a period of greatchange and thedevelopment of our greatgame over the last 100 years.Over 200 people attendedthis event which was deemeda success and was enjoyedby all.This year has also seen anumber of retirements. MsJan Campbell, Manager ofthe Dermatology EducationResearch Management teamannounced her retirementmidyear. Jan was instrumentalin the development andestablishment of the AustralianPsoriasis Registry and movedacross to the Foundationafter a number of years asManager in the Departmentof Dermatology at St.Vincent’s. Fiona Gillen, ourCommunications Managerresigned and moved to FarNorth Queensland to regainher health. Heather Edmonds,our Human ResourcesManager found increasedwork closer to home and hasleft on good terms. All areentitled to our gratitude fortheir support and service tothe Foundation.Clinical ServicesResearchEducationI would like to take thisopportunity to thank alldermatologists who give theirtime to attend clinics at theFoundation. Over the last 12months also, we have seenKathryn Armour join me inthe Phototherapy Clinic ona Wednesday, Anna Brauejoin Chris Baker and I in thePhototherapy and BiologicsClinic on a Friday afternoon,Alex Chamberlain join AnneHoward and Con Dolianitis inthe Nail Clinic, Carol Burfordand Cara McDonald joinJonathan Tversky and EricPoon in the Oral MucosaClinic, following the retirementof Nick Downes, Claire Grillsjoin Robin Marks in the SkinCancer Management Clinic,Michelle Goh join AlvinChong in the TransplantDermatology Clinic, JennyCahill join Rosemary Nixonin the OccupationalDermatology Clinics andLee Mei Yap help out CateScarff in the HyperhidrosisClinic. I apologise to anydermatologists that I haveleft out.A number of initiatives haveprogressed this year.Library: Plans are currentlyunderway to reclaim theupstairs tea room andconvert this back to a placeof reflection and learning.The tea room will movedownstairs.An exciting forthcomingdevelopment at theFoundation is a newAesthetics Clinic which willinclude laser therapy as wellas injectables. Discussionshave been undertakenwith a number of lasercompanies and an excitingannouncement will soon bemade regarding which laserswill be seen on this site.The Australian Psoriasis Registrywith generous support frompharma industry sponsors Abbott, Janssen-Cilag, MSD,and Wyeth/Pfizer, continuesto evolve. We have recentlyundertaken a significantupgrade and a switch insoftware provider. Havingobtained ethics approvalfrom the St. Vincent’s HospitalMelbourne Human ResearchEthics Committee and theBellberry Ethics Committee,we continue the nationalrollout. We are currentlyawaiting ethic approvalin New South Wales, ledby Royal North Shore andLiverpool Hospitals.Trials activity continues toexpand. We have completedtrials in acne and severaloral agents for psoriasis. Anongoing study in the use ofbiologics in psoriasis continues.We are also looking at trialsinvolving biological therapy inatopic dermatitis, biologicaltherapy in cutaneous lupus,biological therapy in chronicidiopathic urticaria, newsmall molecules for psoriasis,and further biological agentsfor psoriasis. An injectableagent for lessening of thesubmental fat pad will also beconsidered.ODRECThis part of the Foundationgoes from strength to strength.Details in the report fromRosemary Nixon are givenlater in this annual report.Congratulations are extendedto Rosemary Nixon who hasbeen recognised for herquality contribution to thefield of occupational andcontact dermatitis and hasbeen promoted to AssociateProfessor.A reworking has been done ofthe Common Skin Conditionsbooklet distributed to thefamily of each newborn childin Victoria.A number of initiatives in thefield of psoriasis have beenundertaken including severalbooklets co-authored withPsoriasis Australia.Skin School coordinated byDr Adriene Lee continues tocontribute to the very strongperformance of Victorianregistrars.Clinical updates coordinatedby Rosemary Nixon continuesto be extremely well attendedand well received.The Melbourne Skin Pathologyjoint venture continues toprovide pathologists fortraining of our registrars indermatopathology.Overseas registrars EugeneTan (New Zealand) andTheja Deerasinghe (Sri Lanka)have joined the team at theFoundation to benefit fromexperience at this specialtyreferral centre.Monash Universityundergraduate teachingDownstairsCafé. We have recentlycompleted negotiationswith the owner of a chain ofsuccessful coffee shops andhave received Melbourne CityCouncil approval. We are nowwaiting commencement ofconstruction and look forwardto quality coffee onsite.Molemap. Establishedin Australia in 2005, thisMelanoma surveillanceprogram combines totalbody photography, digitaldermoscopy and digital serialimaging, along with reviewby an international panel ofdermatologists, to result inearly detection of melanoma.As you can see the last 12months have been extremelybusy. A lot of ventures arecurrently underway and thefuture is indeed full of promise.Negotiations are currentlyunderway to establishmedical student teaching atthe Foundation.We are also in the throes ofestablishing the Foundationas a Da
