Investigative Reporting in the Public InterestSpecial ReportThe Story the S.P. TimesRefused to vigeAt the helm ofscientology’sexplosive growth1

The Bigotry Behind theTimes’ Facade of ResponsibleJournalismSt. Petersburg Times building at 490 First Avenue South in St. PetersburgIn recent years, the S.P. Times has worked hard to present amore honest and credible image to the public, attemptingto shed its reputation for biased reporting. The newspaper’srecent “special” report exposed the facade: At its core, the S.P.Times has not changed. It is an organization that twists the newsto incite hatred against Scientologists and stops at nothing topaint a false picture of the Scientology religion and the Church.Recounting its long record of bigotry toward the Church ofScientology, its members, staff and leaders is unnecessary. That is something with which most Tampa Bay residents areall too familiar, including thousands of non-Scientologistsappalled at the Times’ attempts to unfairly stigmatizeScientologists who are their friends. But if the Times has not changed, the articles in this magazinedetailing Scientology’s explosive expansion in both Clearwaterand around the world show how Scientology has continuedto grow. As the Church has gained greater local prominence,Juxtaposed with the day-to-day realityof friends, neighbors and workmates whoare Scientologists, the hysteria of the Times’stereotypes has become self-evident.thousands of Scientologists have contributed to improving theircommunity through charities and civic groups. Scientologistswork alongside friends and neighbors on civic and cultural boards,in sports and arts societies and in numerous social partnerships. The newly restored Fort Harrison regularly hosts functions forother charitable organizations; public are welcomed for toursand Church staff work hard to invite questions and provide anopen response. Juxtaposed with the day-to-day reality of friends, neighbors and workmates who are Scientologists, the hysteria ofthe Times’ stereotypes has become self-evident.A full and objective review of the recent allegations the Timespresented to the Church from four ex-Scientologists evidencesboth the lack of credibility and sinister motives of these sources—people who will say anything to attack their former faith. The same false allegations have been posted on the “grassyknoll” of the Internet by avowed Scientologist-haters for years. Even though first-person accounts from dozens ofeyewitnesses demolished the fabrications presented by theTimes’ sources, reporters Joe Childs and Tom Tobin refusedto hear from those eyewitnesses. The Church provided an unprecedented amount ofdocumented evidence and detailed accounts proving thesources had lied. The Church also provided detailed evidence regarding themotives of these four apostates to lie about the religion andits leader: delusionary ideas of “taking over” the Church, resentment over their removal from posts and money. In the most offensive gesture of all, the S.P. Times refusedto accept an offer of an in-person interview with Mr. DavidMiscavige, the ecclesiastical leader of the Scientology religion. The interview would have been his first in 11 years and onlythe third in his 25-year career as the Church’s leader. Despitepurporting to seek this interview, to which Mr. Miscavige hadimmediately agreed, the newspaper abandoned its facade ofobjectivity, cancelled the interview and rushed to print. TheTimes reporters and their bosses knew the scheduled interviewwith Mr. Miscavige was absolutely essential under fundamentaljournalistic standards and ethics. When they turned their backson that interview, the reporters made a conscious decision to turntheir backs on the truth. After all, they knew a response wouldfurther annihilate the credibility of their sources, rendering theirfalse story fatal. The Church offered the reporters full and unfettered access tothe Church and all facilities. Tobin and Childs refused to acceptthe offer. The Times decided this information “wasn’t relevant”to their story, that somehow an interview with the Church’secclesiastical leader was unnecessary even for a three-part serieson the man.So, in response to the Times exhibition of unprovokedmalice and shredding of the truth, Freedom presents the real storyof both the Church and the so-called journalism practiced bythe S.P. to direct a truly unique contemporaryreligion—the only major religion to emergein the 20th century. And now the religion’sgrowth has continued at a phenomenalrate in this century, with the numberof individuals completing Scientologycounseling and course services doubling injust the last two years, as but one example. This is being accomplished through hisextraordinary vision in every major aspect, including: Personally driving the internationaldissemination of Scientology; Ensuring that the Scriptures of theScientology religion are pure and true tothe Founder’s original writings; Establishing units to see to thetranslation of millions of pages of theScientology Scriptures into 71 languages; Restoring Mr. Hubbard’s written works, recorded lectures and films of his lectures; Providing the guidance for theacquisition, construction and creation ofideal Scientology organizations; Supplying the direction for the creationof two state-of-the-art digital publishinghouses capable of producing 500,000books and 925,000 CDs per week; Providing the vision for crafting, refining and broadening core Scientologysocial betterment programs in drugeducation and rehabilitation, education, criminal rehabilitation and human rights; Providing support and guidance tothe Volunteer Minister Program, thelargest independent relief force in the freeworld, with more than 195,000 VolunteerMinisters who traveled more than 174,000miles this past year to help an estimated 1.5million people; Personally seeing to the successfuloutcome of critical external affairs issues, including official recognitions of thereligion; and Planning, creating, producing andpresiding over nine annual globallybroadcast events that serve as briefingsfor Scientologists on strategic programs, campaigns, expansion, dissemination andmajor breakthroughs.David Miscavige works for—andanswers to—Scientology’s millions ofparishioners. He is unrelenting in servingtheir interests and the interests of thereligion by implementing Mr. Hubbard’splans and strategies precisely, whiledevoting every spare moment to therestoration of Mr. Hubbard’s technologyand its dissemination to the public.www.freedommag.orgCase in point: Mr. Miscavige’s extensivework leading to the publication and releaseof “The Basics.” The term refers to theScriptural materials that form the veryfoundation of the religion of Scientology, later writings and lectures building uponthe principles contained in The Basics. Therelease of these materials was the culminationof a research project to locate Mr. Hubbard’soriginal manuscripts and dictation tapes ofthese books, followed by verification andcorrection of existing manuscripts to returnthem to their original unadulterated form. Then there were Mr. Hubbard’s lecturesfrom the same time period that correspondedto and expanded upon the content of thebooks. These lectures were originallydelivered to Scientologists in training atthe time and, although recorded, had neverbeen made broadly available due to a lackof adequate reproduction facilities in theChurch’s formative years (1950-1956).While these lectures had beenpreviously gathered up from around theworld and stored in archives, their massreproduction was hindered due to the poorquality of the original recordings or, worse, the deterioration of the master tapes overthe intervening years. The project to restore these lectureswas extensive and only finally becamepossible with advances in computer anddigital technology. Nevertheless, lecturerestoration required the Church to establishthe most elaborate sound restorationstudios on Earth.Mr. Miscavige was intimately involvedwith every aspect of this massive five-yearrestoration project. He personally verifiedall books and lectures, their contentand their sequence so Scientologistscan now study their religion in pureform and chronologically. This projectalone represented thousands of hoursof Mr. Miscavige’s time in ensuring thatevery word conformed precisely withMr. Hubbard’s original works by readingand re-reading each manuscript and finalbook as well as listening to all 2,500 ofMr. Hubbard’s lectures. In total, the replication and publicationof The Basics encompassed 18 books andcorresponding lecture series for each book, totaling 280 lectures (reproduced on compactdisc). All materials—books and lectures—were also made available in translatededitions for the 15 major languages of Earth.Additionally, in 2009, the Beginning Booksof Dianetics and Scientology (nine books intotal) were translated into 50 languages andreleased to the public. The significance of this accomplishmentto Scientologists cannot be overstated.Indeed, it represents not only the purity ofMr. Hubbard’s teachings being available forthe first time, but also signals the fact thatthe religion of Scientology will remain trueto its Founder’s actual words for all the yearsto come. The distribution of these booksand lectures totals 60 million since July2007. This alone has caused a renaissancein the religion. In addition to making these basicScriptural works available to Scientologiststhrough Churches and Missions, Mr.Miscavige also launched a campaign tomake them freely available to anyone whomight want them—specifically, by makingcopies available in all public, university andgovernmental lending libraries of Earth. The religion’s growth hascontinued at a phenomenalrate in this century underMr. Miscavige’s direction. The overriding point: As Scientology’sreligious leader, Mr. Miscavige has devotedhimself to fulfilling the vision of ScientologyFounder L. Ron Hubbard—ensuring itsScripture remains pure and accessibleto all. It is a unique task inasmuch asScientology is the only religion with alloriginal writings of its Founder intact. It isalso a uniquely universal religion inasmuchas all faiths are free to share the works ofL. Ron Hubbard. Then too, and aboveall else, it was Mr. Hubbard’s vision thatspiritual freedom goes hand-in-hand witha belief in the brotherhood of Man. Hence,Mr. Miscavige’s undying work to ensureScientology is extended to all Mankind. It is David Miscavige’s far-reaching visionand unrelenting dedication that have broughtthe Church so far and so fast. What you are about to read is the storyof Scientology the St. Petersburg Timesrefused to tell. They could have accepted theChurch’s offer and investigated first-handthe phenomenon that is Scientology andseen the stark contrast between the storytheir “sources” told and reality. But theyturned their backs on the facts and refusedto tell the true story of Scientology. That story is told in the pages that follow.5

The presence of the Churchgenerates thousands of jobs, boosting theeconomy and revitalizing the area. Independentstudies on the overall economic impact of theChurch found its presence had a decisivelypositive effect. At the end of the 1990s, theChurch and its members accounted for 5.4percent of the area’s sales, 10.7 percent of itsemployment and 3.4 percent of area income. While direct spending by Scientologists totaledalmost 100 million, the Church’s greater impacton the Clearwater economy was estimatedat almost half a billion dollars which, in turn, generated more than 5,000 jobs. The studiesreported that without the Church’s stabilizingpresence, the entire city would be far lessviable economically.
