Why Investin Precious Metals? The three most popular precious metals to invest in are gold, silver and platinum.Gold is so rare that theworld pours more steelin an hour than it haspoured gold in all ofrecorded history.Silver is considered astore of value, but is alsowidely used in industry. You’ll find it in batteriesand solar panel cells forexample. One of the rarestprecious metals, likesilver, platinum is also anindustrial metal. The maindriver for demand is itsuse in the manufacture ofcatalytic convertors.Investing in precious metals can: Generate long-term returns – between 2009 and 2019, the price of gold rosefrom 621 to 1,093 per troy ounce, an increase of 76% Provide a safe haven during times of economic uncertainty Outperform fiat currencies – precious metals are liquid assets with no credit risk Enhance the overall performance of your portfolio – the lack of correlation toother assets means that adding precious metals to your portfolio can reducevolatility and balance risk7

Investingin GoldAn Investment Worth MakingInvesting in gold is an age-oldpractice. Consider this: if you’d bought 55 of gold every month for 18 yearsfrom 2002, you would have over 28,000 of gold by 2020. Comparethat with putting the same amountinto a 3% cash ISA – 15,700 – orsimply setting it aside with no interestat all – 11,880*.When it comes to investing, spreadingrisk helps to avoid overexposure toany one particular asset class. Manyexperts, including the World GoldCouncil suggest putting around 2–10%of your portfolio into a safe haveninvestment such as gold. Why gold? All Royal Mint investment gold is VAT exempt All UK legal tender coins are CGT exempt Gold can mitigate losses in times of market stress***This comparison has been made with a 3% ISA that compounds annually. It is also basedon the LBMA gold price, as fixed on the fifteenth day of each month or the previousbusiness day, and does not take into account premiums or other storage fees that may beassociated with holding gold. **World Gold Council 20198

Investingin SilverWhy invest in silver?Silver is more affordable than gold, but it’s also morevolatile, attracting investors looking for short-term gains.Because equivalent weights are worth less than gold, silver can be liquidated to fund a small financial need.Silver has a long history as currency and is widely usedin the manufacture of jewellery and collectables.Demand is also underpinned by a broad range ofindustrial applications. Thanks to its malleability, conductivity and resistanceto corrosion, silver is an important component in thetelecommunications, medical and energy sectors. You’llfind silver in things like mobile phones and the cells insolar panels.10

Investing inPlatinumWhy invest in platinum? While gold and silver need little introduction, platinum is a precious metal you might not beso familiar with. Mined primarily in Canada,Columbia, Peru, Russia and South Africa, platinum is one of the rarest of all preciousmetals. Annual production is around 6% of thatof gold and its natural scarcity is compoundedby a complex refinement process. Thanks to its beautiful silver-blue colour, platinum is a highly sought-after componentin prestige jewellery and it has a wide varietyof industrial uses including: electronics, chemical processing and medical and dentalapplications. As an essential componentin catalytic convertors, platinum plays animportant role in lessening the environmentalimpact of diesel engines.12

Capital Gains Tax(CGT) ExplainedCapital Gains Tax (CGT) is levied in the UK on the profit made on the disposalof assets. Unlike income tax, only the gain is taxable. The cost of acquiringthe asset is deducted from any calculation, along with your annual exemptionlimit, the amount you’re allowed to receive before CGT becomes applicable. The vast majority of assets, including paintings, antiques, most shares and anyproperty aside from your main residence, are all liable for CGT. But, becausethey’re legal tender, our UK bullion coins are exempt for UK residents. In order to have to pay CGT on the sale of precious metals, a domestic buyersubject to British taxes would need to have made more profit than the annualexemption limit on the sale of all of their assets during the course of thetax year.VAT on PreciousMetals ExplainedSilver and platinum coinsand bars are subject toVAT at the standard rate. However, gold enjoys thesame exemption as otherforms of investment likestocks and shares. Thismeans that gold bulliontransactions are VAT free.14
