March 2019Badger School District #676Volume XXIV Issue 6Badger Robotics Teach Kindergarteners STEM ActivitiesSubmitted by: Valerie Truscinski, Robotics AdvisorBadger School’s FIRST Robotics team paired up with the kindergarten class to teach STEM (Science, Technology,Engineering, and Math) activities. The intent of the collaboration was to help kindergarten students engage in and be exposed toSTEM. The boys and girls were guided through building a marble run, constructing a working gear set, creating 2D and 3Dgumdrop shapes, and assembling a Lego construction. The hands on aspect helped students to understand that they can manipulatethe parts of the activity themselves. Active learning was constant as all students (both high school and kindergarten) had a great dayof learning!Back: Aulona Jasiqi,Lucca Tonetto, Kobe Dostal,Lexi Rud, Jasmine Christianson,Avdyl Jasiqi, Jack Burkel,Olivia Hamann, Jasmyn Rud,Hannah Rud, Brooke VonEnde,Kennedy TruscinskiMiddle: Jordan Scharf,Talon Hilligas, Emma VonEnde,Tatum Rinde, Emerson Jenson,Charlotte Lane,Josephine Curry-Schram,Steele Marquis, Easton Buley,Kasen SwensonFront: Kaden Randall,Raeleena Friesner, Ezra Monsrud,Eli Washington, Paige Gust,Tayleigh Stoppelman,Jaryn KukowskiKnights of Columbus Free Throw ContestJordan LeeAdvances!Pictured are Tryg Olson (10), Eli Olafson (9), MasenSwenson (11), and Jordan Lee (12) who advanced to theRegional Knights of Columbus Free Throw Contest thatwas held in Crookston on March 3.Seventh grader Jordan Lee made20 out of 25 free throws atRegional Knights of ColumbusFree Throw Contest to advanceto the State ChampionshipKnights of Columbus Contest tobe held on March 30 at St. Cloud.Congratulation Jordan!

If school was to start any later, everyone’sschedules would be off. Badger school starts laterthan most schools.Brooke VonEnde: No, I don’t think the school dayshould start any later. The objectives of MinnesotaFCCLA’s Shadow Day are to increase a member’s awareness of state government and the political process, see first-hand theelected officials work, develop an awareness of current issues (especially those relating to families), explore career options in publicservice, and educate local chapters, schools, and communities about the impact of the shadowing experience. This event also relatesto four of our national programs: Career Connections, FACTS, Families First, and Power of One. After completion, students will explore their personal results. Sixth graders will also be exposed to theconcept of a constantly changing world and that careers of the past might not necessarily exist in the future.Workshop: Car eer Cluster & Inter est Sur veyGRADE 7: Seventh graders will be preparing for a panel of college students to ask questions of what college has been like forthem. This has proven valuable for students who may have lots of questions about what it’s really like to go to college. Students willalso be looking at financial awareness as going to college may require going into some debt. “Good debt” and “bad debt” will bediscussed.Workshop: Guest Speaker s on CollegeGRADE 8: Advisory sessions in March will focus on the costs of college, whether it is a two-year or four-year school, private orpublic. A good link for parents to investigate is s to find out more about collegesand financial aid packages. Different colleges offer different financial aid packages, and sometimes the more expensive collegeoffers the best financial aid package. The “sticker price” is not always the final price. Students will also work on ways to pay forcollege including savings, work study, scholarships, grants, and loans. There are multiple ways to pay for college without incurringexcessive loans, so students should not decide they can’t go because of costs.GRADE 9: During March, students will be introduced to 21 st century skills. Special attention will be given to Career and TechnicalEducation class opportunities within our school and in the postsecondary field. Students will also learn about opportunities availableto them for earning college credits while still in high school through concurrent enrollment.GRADE 10: Sophomores will be instructed on the relevant sections of a resume and how to begin building one for their own use.In addition, students will be asked to think about what interests them, so they can consider what career and postsecondary experiencewould be best for them.GRADE 11: J uniors will address the factors students should consider when applying to colleges. In one activity, students willunderstand the purpose of making a college campus visit. Another activity introduces the idea of safe, match, and reach colleges.Juniors will also study the importance of being a lifelong learning and its impact on employability, which is relevant to summer jobs, internships, and their long-term career goals.GRADE 12: Seniors will prepare for a panel of current college students to find out what the reality of college is like. Students willlook at an interesting survey of first year college students that reveals aspects of the college experience that may not have beenanticipated and the challenges they face. Seniors will also learn more about study groups and how they can benefit the collegeexperience.Workshop: College Panel on Postsecondar y Exper ienceBadger School Chess ClubEvery Friday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. in the LibraryEveryone in grades 5-12 is welcome!Become a member or just drop in for a game and/or some instruction!
