COURSE DESCRIPTIONIgnatian Spiritual Exercises Training is an intensive theoretical and practical training to equipparticipants to accompany others through the Full Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius in daily life or inthe residential retreat setting. It will offer an in-depth look at the structure, content and dynamics ofthe Spiritual Exercises process and offer insight with regard to how to sensitively adapt and apply thematerial based on the needs of the person being accompanied. The course will be offered onlineover 36 weeks.The course also involves personal reflection on one’s own experience of having made the SpiritualExercises; intensive reading; sharing and discussion with peers and as well as mentoring. There is apracticum component which involves taking a retreatant through the Spiritual Exercises in daily lifewith close supervision.IGNATIAN SPIRITUAL EXERCISES TRAINING02

COURSE DETAILSCOURSE PREREQUISITES To have made the Full Spiritual Exercises of St Ignatius either as a retreat in daily life [19th Annotation]or as a 30-Day residential retreat. To have had prior training and experience as a spiritual director To be in one’s own spiritual direction and supervision.COURSE REQUIREMENTS To attend and participate online in real time in a minimum of 32 of the 36 course sessions and to catch upany sessions missed. To complete one reflection paper per each of the four blocks. To complete and pass the four assignments – one in each block. COURSE LEADERSTrevor Hudson has served as a Minister of the Methodist Church of Southern Africafor over 40 years. Having stepped away from active Pastoral Ministry in the localcongregation, he now focuses on teaching and lecturing in the areas of Spiritual Direction,Spiritual Formation, and Pastoral Therapy. Since the mid-nineties, he has had the privilegeof working closely with the Jesuit Institute of South Africa in the training of spiritualdirectors and givers of the Spiritual Exercises. Presently he serves as a Senior Fellow ofthe Martin Institute at Westmont University, lectures at the Renovare Institute for SpiritualFormation, at Fuller University (USA) in their doctoral program in Spiritual Direction, andat Stellenbosch University in SA in their Masters program in Missional Spirituality. He is theauthor of 23 books, including his latest SEEKING GOD: Finding Another Kind of Life with StIgnatius and Dallas Willard. (To be published by Nav Press in 2022)Dr Annemarie Paulin-Campbell heads up the Spirituality work at the Jesuit InstituteSouth Africa. She has a doctorate in the interface between Psychology and ChristianSpirituality. Her doctoral thesis was on shifts in image of God and self in women makingthe Spiritual Exercises as a 19th Annotation Retreat. She has been training and supervisingSpiritual Directors and Givers of the Exercises for over twenty years. She co-authoredwith Elizabeth Liebert the revision of the book: “Spiritual Exercises Reclaimed: UncoveringLiberating Possibilities for Women” due to be published by Paulist Press in late 2021. Sheis on the Editorial Board of The Way Journal of Spirituality. She has presented workshopsfor the Spiritual Directors International Conference in the United States and was keynotespeaker at a conference of the Spiritual Exercises Network in the United Kingdom. She hasgiven the 30-Day retreat both in South Africa and at St Beuno’s Spirituality Centre in NorthWales. Annemarie also works as a psychologist and life coach.Russell Pollitt SJ is a Jesuit priest and director of the Jesuit Institute in South Africa. Hedid his formal spiritual direction training in the United States and has given retreats basedon the Exercises, both preached and directed extensively in South Africa. He has givenretreats in Spain, California and Southern Africa. He has been involved with the trainingof spiritual directors for the past seven years. He served as Parish Priest and UniversityChaplain for a number of years in Johannesburg. Russell has a particular interest inlooking at how Ignatian Spirituality and the Exercises can be a resource for spiritualgrowth in a rapidly changing world, for seekers as well as for those rooted in differentchurch contexts. Each student will be assigned a mentor and supervisor.Some of these are based in South Africa and some in the UnitedStates and Canada. These will be introduced after acceptance to theprogramme.
