1:35 p.m.Yield Enhancements in Distressed Debt PortfoliosRobert BenhenniLÉONARD DE VINCI PÔLE UNIVERSITAIRE,Research CenterAnthony MorroGlobal Director of Financial Restructuringand Insolvency PracticeWHITE & CASE LLPMichael CiklinPERINI CAPITALFresh research shows that returns on defaulted corporatebonds are exceeding returns on defaulted loan obligationsover the course of a restructuring proceeding. Profs.Edward Altman and Robert Benhenni use time series ofbond and loan pricing to gauge the return and risk ofinvesting in defaulted securities over the entirerestructuring period to show that corporate bond ROIs fromdefault until emergence is impressive, but returns ondefaulted corporate bank loans are uniformly poor.Dissecting returns on bond investments by seniorityranking in the issuer's capital structure showed that seniorunsecured bonds outperformed both senior secured bondsand subordinated debt. This panel will examine how distressed debt investorsmight craft portfolio investment strategies in thisalternative asset class to take advantage of this newevidence using an appropriate measure of volatility toaddress the return and risk tradeoffs of these investmentalternatives compared to the more familiar high yield assetclass. This panel will also explore whether distressed debtinvestors might want to favor senior unsecured bonds oversenior secured bonds and why subordinated debt looks likeit's typically overpriced at the time of default.
