GOSPEL MEDITATION - ENCOURAGE DEEPER UNDERSTANDING OF SCRIPTUREMass Inten!onsnsThere is something about being first. Whether it be first in line, first to be picked forthe team, or the first one to finish their work, great sa"sfac"on is achieved. Our egoslove being first. It somehow sets us apart from everyone else, gives us a sense ofpride and posi"ons us to feel be#er than others. When we are first, we can glory inour efforts, skills, and achievements. Isn’t that what really ma#ers? A%er all, we aretaught from a very young age to be proficient, stay on top, be the best at what wedo, and win the praise and esteem of others. This is the stuff that makes us successfuland provides us with a comfortable, sa"sfying life.Thursday, September 23rd8:00 a.m.Tim Staudinger &Gino PanoshSaturday, September 25th4:30 p.m.John & AngelineKoenig FamilySunday, September 26th8:00 a.m.Steve Saunders10:00 a.m.Robert & DorothyJesus wants none of it. All of the details we anguish over mean li#le to the kingdomHerr & Ralph Griesof God. You want to be first? Then, be a servant and welcome a child. All of this is theopposite of our o%en vehement pursuits. If we are serious about following Jesus andliving the Gospel, then we must put the needs of others before our own. If wecon"nue to listen only to the noise of the world, we are going to con"nue to believethe illusions we inherit. Those illusions come in many forms, but all have things incommon: me before you, being on top and not the bo#om, us versus them, personalsecurity over universal harmony and peace. When are we going to learn that alwaysstriving to be the best and first is an empty pursuit in our struggle for happiness? While sa"sfying our ego with this momentary boost of esteem may feel good for amoment, is it what we really desire? If we can break from the world’s noise and create a space of sacred silence in ourlives, we can begin to listen and see that we are being called in another direc"on.What we really desire is not the bolstering of our egos but the innocence we lostsomewhere along the way. When we can be playful, joyful, and even somewhatcarefree, life is good. We want our rela"onships to work, a place to call home, and tolive peaceful lives with our sisters and brothers. Only a servant can do this. Theservant’s prayer seeks to detach from self-concern in order to be used by God. Ratherthan worrying about being first and coming out on top, we can be inspired, guided, empowered, and led to do good works. Stop worrying about being first and put greaterenergy into feeling joy. Cateche!cal SundayQues!on: Why do we celebrate Cateche"cal Sunday?Answer: The mission of the church reflects the mission of Jesus to teach, preach, heal, and forgive. Through these acts, Jesus shares the good news of salva"on andinvites all people to share in the life and love of God. The church con"nues thismission in all its ministries, but especially, and perhaps most importantly, throughcatechesis.Cateche"cal Sunday is celebrated on the third Sunday of September. The task ofhanding on the Gospel is entrusted to the whole community, who by word andexample, form young and new members in the way of the Gospel. Parish programsassist parents in teaching the basics of faith through liturgical experience, instruc"on,and faith forma"on. This ministry is essen"al for the parish to grow, for individuals todevelop as believers, and for the ongoing spiritual forma"on of the wholecommunity. It reminds the church that preaching the Gospel and growing in faith areessen"al to our sacramental prac"ce and our liturgical prayer. LPi
