Designingbeautifulresilientandresponsiveplacesis at theheart of theLandscapeArchitectureprogramat UNMThe core educational mission of the program is theinvestigation of principles and theories of LandscapeArchitecture, their application as tools for criticalthinking and their synthesis in design and practice.The program prepares students to apply these toolsin a larger world context of social, cultural, environmental and evolutionary influences on the landscape.TheLandscapeArchitectureProgram at UNMhelps studentsto build theknowledgeand skillsthat willadvance theminto successfulprofessionalcareersThe Master of Landscape Architecture degreeis a first professional graduate degree that prepares graduates to enter the professional realm oflandscape architecture. The MLA degree programaccepts applications from students with previousdegrees in non-design and design disciplines. Studentsin theLandscapeArchitectureprogram at UNM arewinning awardsin national andinternationaldesigncompetitionsThe level of design studio instruction is very high,and students in the Landscape Architecture Programhave been recognized for their studio design work.Since the Program began in 2000, seventeen graduate students have won national and internationaldesign competitions. In addition, a number ofawards have been won for studio projects in theinterdisciplinary urban design/community studio.The Universityof New MexicoPROVIDES ANEXCELLENTQUALITYOF EDUCATIONAT A VERYAFFORDABLE COSTThe new scorecard of universities issued by the USDepartment of Education has ranked the Universityof New Mexico third in affordability among universities that have degrees in Architecture and RelatedServices. In addition, the Landscape ArchitectureProgram is able to offer a number of graduateassistantships for non-resident students, allowingthem to pay in-state tuition rates during their firstyear while they establish residency in New Mexico.For international students, the assistantships maybe extended through their program of study. Otherassistantships, normally for students in second andthird years, are available for research and contractwork being carried out by faculty in the Program.Annual student awards for various categories ofacademic achievement are sponsored by the NewMexico chapter of the ASLA, the offices of localLandscape Architects, and other benefactors.

Students areengaged,challenged, andimmersedin designthroughout thestudio sequence,exploring andexperimentingwith various mediaThe School of Architecture and Planning ComputingLab features a robust collection of hardware and software that is updated on a regular basis. Black andwhite as well as color printing and plotting are available in the Lab at cost. The school also has a state ofthe art fabrication laboratory (FabLab) offering a balance of cutting-edge digital as well as traditional tools.The Lab supports students and faculty in the exploration and investigation of materials research, includingwood, metals, plastics and concrete. The resourcesof both labs support the design studio sequence thatexposes students to a range of landscape scales andtypes. Studio projects frequently engage clients andcommunities throughout New Mexico.Graduates of the Landscape Architecture Programat the University of New Mexico are helping to shapethe built environment in a variety of fields. In additionto the degree program, which prepares students for acareer as a practicing Landscape Architect, the schoolalso offers certificate programs and concentrations forthose who want to apply a design-based approach todifferent real-world challenges.The Certificate Program in Historic Preservation andRegionalism (HPR) explores preservation issues and techniquesin the context of tourism development, contemporary designand planning informed by regional traditions, cultural landscapeplanning, and historic landscape preservation. The program istranscripted and requires eighteen hours of coursework, nine ofwhich may overlap with the Master of Landscape Architectureprogram of study.The Certificate Program in Urban and Regional Design (URD)aims to give students the foundations to ask critical questionsabout, study examples of, and propose approaches to designing the emergence of regions, towns, and cities. The programis transcripted and requires eighteen hours of coursework, nineof which may overlap with the Master of Landscape Architectureprogram of study.The newly developed Indigenous Design and PlanningConcentration (iD Pi) educates and informs Indigenous designand planning by engaging faculty, students, professionals andcommunity leaders in culturally responsive practices. The interdisciplinary framework for the concentration is holistic andembodies the health and well-being of culturally sustainabledesign and planning.LandscapeArchitectsare emergingas globalleaders inresponsibledesign of thebuilt environment
