VOCABULARYnitya: daily, eternal; the rhythm of nature.karma: action, ritualNitya Karma teaches us how to perform our daily routines in a way thatbrings us closer to the Divine in every action of life.ऋण ṛṇa: debt, there are 3 debts that every human is born with1.deva: divine; debt to the Gods2. ऋṛṣi: Seers, ancient sages of India; debt to Rishis3.pitṛ: ancestors; debt to the ancestorsNitya karma teaches us how to repay these debts.siddhānta: foundation of Vedic dharmaniyama: rules (can change)जड jaḍa: lifeless, inanimate (rocks, mountains, etc.)cetana: consciousness; (soul)sūkṣma: the subtle force that is the spark of lifesthūla: gross, physical (human body)2

pañca jñānendriya:dṛṣṭa: what can be sensed with the 5 sensesadṛṣṭa: beyond the 5 senses; sensed by manas, buddhi, andatma.pratyakṣa: appearing before the eyes; cognizable by any of thesense organs; evident, manifest, and perceptibleapratyakṣa: cannot be seen; not cognizable by any senseorgan (gravity, magnetics, mathematics, etc.)ड aṇḍa: the universe (as a macrocosm of the human body)ड piṇḍa: the individual body (as a microcosm of the universe)pāpa: bad, sinful; any action that goes against the natural unfoldingof naturepuṇya: good, virtuous; any action that helps nature to progressharmoniously.bhāvanā: desire, will power3

2.KaravalokanaLooking at the palms of your handsAs you begin to awake in the morning and your eyes first open, look into yourpalms.Karāgre vasate lakṣmīḥ karamadhye sarasvatī Our palms are divided in 3 parts. Lakshmi (wealth) resides in the front of thefingers, Saraswati (knowledge) in the middle of the palms karamūle tu govindaḥ prabhāte karadarśanam and Govinda (karma & moksha) in the front of the wrist. First thing in the morningone should look at the palms of their hands to receive the blessings of thesedeities.3.Bhumi vandanāBefore getting out of bed and placing your feet on the ground recite the followingmantra.samudravasane devi parvatastana maṇḍite The Earth Goddess is clothed by the oceans and the majestic mountains are herbreasts.viṣṇupatni namastubhyaṁ pādasparśaṁ kṣamasvame5

We bow with reverence to the wife of Vishnu, Mother Earth, and ask forgivenessfor touching her with our feet.4. Maṅgala darśanaGood things to see in the morningGorocana, sandalwood, gold, sankha (conch) mridanga, darpana (mirror),gems, guru, agni, suryaSay namaskar to your Father, Mother, Guru, and IshtaMānasa śuddhi5.Mental purificationॐ-om apavitraḥ pavitro vā sarvāvasthāṁ gato-pi vā The impure and the pure reside within all objects,yaḥ smaret puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ sa bāhyābhyantaraḥ śuciḥwho meditates on the lotus-eyes of Puṇḍarīkākṣa (Nārāyana)becomes pure inside and out.6.ज ज Ajapājapaajapā nāma gāyatrī yogināṁ mokṣadāyinī Gayatri is one name of Ajapa, who gives moksha to yogis.6

tasyāḥ saṁkalpamātreṇa jivanmukto na saṁśayaḥ Only focusing your intention on that Ajapa liberates one's life without a doubt.7.ॐsaṅkalpa-om viṣṇurviṣṇurviṣṇuḥ adya brahmaṇo-hnidvitīyaparārdhe śrī iṁṣatitame kaliyugekaliprathamacaraṇe amerikā nāmniḥ sthāne dineprātaḥkāle gotraḥ ahaṁ taṁ ṣvāsakriyayākāritaṁajapāgāyatrījapakarma bhagavate samarpaye ॐom tatsat śrībrahmārpaṇamastu 7

8. णGaṇeśa mantraRemain seated in your bed and recite the following mantras.ॐom tat puruṣāya vidmahe vakratuṇḍāya dhīmahitanno dantiḥ pracodayāt ॐom śrī gaṇeśāya namaḥ I bow to Ganeshaॐom gaṁ gaṇapataye namaḥFocus on your muladhara chakra and recite internally 44 times.ण9.ॐśrī viṣṇu mantraom namo nārāyaṇāyaॐom namo bhagavate vāsudevāya10.śiva mantraॐom namaḥ śivāya 8

11.śrī devi mantraॐom durgāyai namaḥ12.sūrya mantraॐom ādityāya namaḥॐom sūryāya namaḥ13.Navagraha mantraSaying goodmorning to the 9 planetsbramhā murārīs tripurāntakārī bhānuḥ śaśībhūmisuto budhaśca Brahma (Creator), Vishnu (Preserver), Mahesha (Destroyer), Sun, Moon, Mars,Mercury guruśca śukraḥ śanirāhuketavaḥ kurvantu sarvemama suprabhātam Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, Ketu; may all the planets make my day beautiful.9

14. ऋṛṣi mantrabhṛgurvasiṣṭhaḥ kraturaṅgirāśca manuḥ pulastyaḥpulahaścagautamaḥ Bhṛgu, Vasiṣṭha, Kratu, Angira, Manu, Pulastya, Pulaha, Gautama,raibhyo marīciścyavanśca dakṣaḥ kurvantu sarvemama suprabhātam Raibhya, Marīci, Chyawan, Dakṣa, all these Rishis make my day beautiful.15.Prakṛti mantrapṛthvī sagandhā sarasāstathāpaḥ sparśī cavāyurjvalitaṁ ca tejaḥ The sweet-smelling Mother Earth, with her sweet tasting water, the air thattouches you, the fire that is lit nabhaḥ saśabdaṁ mahatā sahaiva kurvantu sarvemama suprabhātam.the sound of space, and my tattvas, make my day beautiful.10

16.Tailābhyaṅga vidhitailābhyaṅge ravau tāpaḥ some śobhā kuje mṛtiḥ budhe dhanaṁ gurau hāniḥ śukre duḥkhaṁ śanausukham Receiving massage on Sunday makes one lose tejas: on Monday, Ojas:Tuesday,one day off your live; Wednesday, money will leave you; Thursday, knowledgesdecreases; Friday, suffering and loss of shukra; Saturday; great happiness.ravau puṣpaṁ gurau dūrvā bhaumavāre tu mṛttikā gomayaṁ śukravāre ca tailābhyaṅge na doṣabhākTo balance these effects for a massage on Sunday, use flowers in the oil;Thursday, durwa grass; Tuesday, mud; Friday, cow dung; this way the dosha ofthe oil is removed.sārṣapaṁ gandhatailaṁ ca yattailaṁ puṣpavāsitam anyadravyayutaṁ tailaṁ na duṣyati kadācana Mustard oil can be used every day for self-massage.11

śaucācara17.danta dhāvanaCleaning the teethāyurbalaṁ yaśo varcaḥ prajāḥ paśuvasūni ca brahma prajñāṁ ca medhāṁ ca tvaṁ no dehivanaspate O Vanaspate (wild herbs), please increase my life, strength, reputation, family,friends, animals, pure mind, and good thoughts.18.snān mantraBathinggaṅge ca yamune caiva godāvari sarasvati narbade sindhu kāverī jale'smin sannidhiṁ kuru O Mother Gangā, Yamunā, Godāvari, Saraswati,Narbadā, Sindhu, Kāverī; I invite these Seven Holy riversto the water I am bathing in (the 7 nāḍī of the body).12

śikhā bandhana19.Hold your right hand on your crown chakracidrūpiṇi mahāmāye divyatejaḥsamanvite tiṣṭha devi śikhāmadhye tejovṛddhiṁ kuruśva me To the Shakti of thought, to Mahāmāyā, who has inexplainable light, please arrivein my crown chakra and give me the Tejas to improve my life.20.ācamanॐom keśavāya namaḥNamaste (I bow) to the one with beautiful hair.ॐom nārāyaṇāya namaḥNamaste (I bow) to the whole and complete consciousness.ॐom mādhavāya namaḥNamaste (I bow) to the one who is always sweet.ॐom govindāya namaḥ13

The body of Truthॐom tatsaviturvareṇyambhargo devasyadhīmahi dhiyo yo naḥ pracodayāt We meditate upon the light of wisdom which is the supreme wealth of the Gods.May it grant to us increase in our meditations.ॐom āpo jyotī raso'mṛtaṁ brahma bhūrbhuvaḥ svarom May the waters luminous with the nectar of immortality fill the earth, the sky, andthe heavens.22.ण TarpaṇaOffering of waterDeva tarpaṇaOffering of water to the Godsॐom brahmādayo devāstṛpyantām To the Creator, the Preserver, and the Destroyer, I offer this water. Universe may be satisfied)ॐom bhūrdevāstṛpyantām To all the deities in the Earth realm, I offer this water.ॐom bhuvardevāstṛpyantām To all the deities in the Subtle Realm, I offer this water.ॐom svardevāstṛpyantām To all the deities in the Casual realm (beyond what we see),I offer this water.ॐom bhūrbhuvaḥ svardevāstṛpyantām To the 3 realms within, I offer this water (that the whole universe may be satiated.)23. ऋण ṛṣi tarpaṇaॐom sanakādayo manuṣyāstṛpyantām To the first son of the Creator, I offer this water.16

ॐom bhūrṛṣayastṛpyantām To the ṛṣi of the Earth realm, I offer this water.ॐom bhuvarṛṣayastṛpyantām To the ṛṣi of the Subtle realm, I offer this water.ॐom svarṛṣayastṛpyantām To the ṛṣi of the Casual realm, I offer this water.ॐom bhūrbhuvaḥ svarṛṣayastṛpyantām To the ṛṣi of the entire universe, I offer this water.24.ण pitṛ tarpaṇaॐom kavyavāḍanalādayaḥ pitarastṛpyantām ॐom caturdaśayamāstṛpyantām To the 14 names of Yama (Lord of Death), I offer this water.17

ॐom bhūḥ pitarastṛpyantām To the Ancestors who stay in the Earth realm, I offer this water.ॐom bhuvaḥ pitarastṛpyantām To the Ancestors who stay in the Subtle realm, I offer this water.ॐom svaḥ pitarastṛpyantām To the Ancestors who stay in the Heavenly realm, I offer this water.ॐom bhūrbhuvaḥ svaḥ pitarastṛpyantām To all the Ancestors, I offer this water.yanmayā dūṣitaṁ toyaṁ śārīraṁ malasambhavamtasya pāpasya śuddhyarthaṁ yakṣmāṇaṁtarpayāmyaham As I have done this tarpana, if my body and mind were not pure; for those wrongactions I offer this water to Yaksha so that it is pure.18

25. जjapa vidhiHow to perform japakṛtvottānau karau prātaḥ sāyaṁ cādhomukhau tataḥ madhye sammukhahastābhyāṁ japa evamudāhṛtaḥ In the morning, hold your mālā at the nābhi (Manipura chakra); in the afternoon, atyour heart (Anahata chakra); and in the evening, at your nose (Ajna chakra)mālā vandanā26.ॐom māṁ māle mahāmāye sarvaśaktisvarūpiṇī caturvargastvayi nyastastasmānme siddhidā bhava My rosary, the Great Measurement of Consciousness, containing all energy withinas your intrinsic nature, give to me the attainment of your Perfection, fulfilling thefour objectives of life.27. ॐom viṣṇave namaḥॐom adbhyo namaḥॐom apāmpataye namaḥॐom varuṇāya namaḥॐom yatpādapaṅkajasmaraṇāt yasya nāmadapādapi nyūnaṁ karma bhavet pūrṇaṁ taṁ vandesāmbamīśvaram All karma becomes complete by meditating on the lotus feet of Sāmbasadā Shivaor remembering his name only once.ॐom viṣṇave namaḥ ॐom viṣṇave namaḥ ॐom viṣṇave namaḥ 23

29.Sūrya Namaskāraehi sūrya sahasrāṁśo tejorāśe jagatpateanukampaya māṁ bhaktyā gṛhāṇārghyaṁ divākaraO Surya with your thousand divisions of light and powerful rays, show compassionto your devotees and accept my prayer.dhyeyaḥ sadā savitṛmaṇḍalamadhyavartī nārāyaṇaḥsarisajāsanasaṁniviṣṭaḥ keyūravān makarakuṇḍalavān kirīṭī hārīhiraṇmayavapurdhṛtaśaṅkhacakraḥ 1. ॐ30. ॐom karmasākṣiṇe aruṇāya namaḥādityasya namaskāraṁ ye kurvanti dine dinejanmāntarasahasreṣu dāriddraṁ nopajāyateakālamṛtyuharaṇaṁ sarvavyādhivināśanam sūryapādodakaṁ tīrthaṁ jaṭhare dhārayāmyaham O Lord, you remove any danger in life and destroy any type of disease andsickness; the holy water that drips from Nārāyaṇa's feet I am holding that withinmy jaṭhara (digestive fire).ॐom tatsat kṛtamidaṁ karma brahmārpaṇamastuॐom viṣṇave namaḥॐom viṣṇave namaḥॐom viṣṇave namaḥॐom śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ26
