Disciplines of GraceHow to Walk In The SpiritRobert L. GoldsbyWalking Out Your DestinyGod never asks something of us which He has not provided the power to accomplish. Living agodly life and fulfilling the destiny God has given us is possible! (Rom 8:2-4; Rom 6:14;Titus 2:11-12).Then why do we so often fail? Why do we see so many Christians discouraged and giving up –backsliding into a life of despair and carnal living?There is no single or simple answer but I believe there are two primary factors:1. The church has departed from the great commission. We have filled our time, financesand efforts with missionary activity and preaching (all vital activities) but have failed tomake disciples (the only command in Matt. 28:18-ff). We must return to relationaldiscipleship without failing to preach the Gospel while we are going.2. As individuals we fail to exercise the classic disciplines which position us in a place of“open heavens” and “open doors” to God. Only with his grace can we overcome the fleshand experience His life!What are these disciplines? They are identified many ways but I have chosen to use the term“The Disciplines of Grace.”1Why “Disciplines of Grace”?We live in an age of egocentrism and mediocrity – and the church has not been immune to theseinfluences of our society. Everywhere we turn one hears the challenge to lower the commitmentlevel, to reduce the expectations and find easier ways. Members of our society are less and lesswilling to do the work to become excellent.In short, the word "discipline” is one we shrink back from. There may be a few areas where wefind disciplined effort necessary but those are rare. We see in some athletes the kind of disciplinenecessary to become excellent but, it is not common, even in athletics, to find a man or womanwho goes beyond the necessary exercises to the kind of self-denial that enables them to becomeexcellent.The same is true of our spiritual life. There are some who arrange their life and priorities with thekind of discipline that they may seek the Lord with their whole heart, but not many. The authorsof Scripture, under inspiration of the Holy Spirit, clearly expected that those who are followersof Christ would grow, to experience a transformed life and the kind of maturity that woulddemonstrate the presence and the power of God in their daily living.We must strive for excellence, not in the flesh but in the Spirit by grace!1The term “Means of Grace” has been used by theologians and in the confessions of various denominations forcenturies. Each group has a very specific definition for the term. I’m not interested in fighting over the term nordo I have any objection to that term being used in the more narrow way. I chose the term “Disciplines of Grace”because I believe it is appropriate to challenge disciples to both grow in grace and to show them some of theclassical disciplines that have aided saints to do that.1

GoldsbyDisciplines of GraceHow to Walk In The SpiritDo Not Resist GraceWe must see sin and conflict in our life to be a result of resisting, of failing, the grace of God andtherefore as diagnostic (see Titus 2:11-12; James 4:7; Hebrews 12:7-17).Tri-Partite2 ManTo cooperate with the transformation of our minds we need to understand that God has made usin three parts: spirit, soul and body. "Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you entirely;and may your spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, without blame at the coming ofour Lord Jesus Christ." (1 Thessalonians 5:23)[Note: c.f. Hebrews 4:12: “Soul/Spirit; Joint & Marrow; thoughts and intents of the heart.”)We are a spirit, which has a soul and lives in a body.SpiritThe spirit is the INWARD MAN, the “real” us. Paul speaks of our spirit as “The New Man”(Ephesians 4:20-22). This new man is “born again” as God plants faith in us and saves us. At thislevel our spirit communicates directly with God.3SoulThe soul is a description of our mind, which is made up of our will, intellect, emotions andimagination.” This is where learning takes place. Our soul develops habits and patterns in ourlife. Paul says to be “transformed by the renewing of your mind,” (Romans 12:2). As the Lorddirects our spirit in the affairs of life, the spirit instructs the soul.Spiritual maturity, then, is the process of submitting to the Lord and His direction so that ourmind (and our life style) is renewed. This renewal is reflected in our goals, attitudes, actions anddesires.In short, we are transformed to be more and more like Jesus (Eph 4:13).BodyThe body is our physical member and through our physical senses we make contact with thepeople around us. In making that contact we will either be influenced by them OR we willinfluence them. The question we must ask ourselves is “What kind of interaction is therebetween me and the world?” Who influences whom? (c.f. James 4:1-12)SanctificationAs we saw in 1 Thess 5:23, we are to be “entirely sanctified” in Spirit, Soul and Body. The wordsanctified means to be “set apart for God’s purposes.” We are never to treat as profane4 ourbodies or the resources God has entrusted to us, they are sanctified to Him.232By tri-partite we do not mean triune. We are three parts (tri-partite) God alone is triune. He is ONE God!As we shall see, the Charismatic gift of tongues facilitates this process.

Disciplines of GraceHow to Walk In The SpiritRobert L. GoldsbySpirit-Filled LifeThe term “spirit filled,” reflects the on-going process of submitting to the Holy Spirit in everyarea of life. We are “sanctified” (set-apart) for God’s purpose (Deut 27:8-10).[Strong Holy Spirit influence weak flesh influence on our mind.] As we “walk in the Spirit” (Gal 5:16-25) and live according to the direction of our “newman,” we become a positive witness of the love and power of God. GoldsbyDisciplines of GraceHow to Walk In The SpiritWhat is Grace?6Peter opens his second epistle with the benediction: “grace and peace be multiplied unto you.”He then goes on to charge followers of Christ to grow in character and behavior.As one would expect, God does not require something of us which He does not provide thepower to do. The power to accomplish the purposes of God is called Grace. Grace has beenvariously described as:“The undeserved, unearned, unmeritedfavor of God”and.GRACEod’sichesthrist’sxpenseBoth statements are true but neither gives us much of a handle on what it is we are getting. Allwe really know is that we get “underserved favor and riches” and we sense that grace is good.As I studied the passages on grace I found that, in nearly every instance, grace provides thepower to accomplish the purposes of God; it produced some effect in the believer. That study7resulted in the following working definition:“Grace is the underserved power of God working in our lives so that we can both will and doHis good pleasure (His will and purpose).”In other words, God empowers us so that we can “walk the walk.”The Biblical Mandate: SanctificationI fear that we have a sub-normal standard for Christ’s disciples in our current society, a standardwhich actually militates against what the Bible considers to be the norm.The “normal state” of the Christian life is one infused with the grace of God. This graceempowers him, by God’s Holy Spirit, to walk in God’s will and purpose. That defrauds them! The television program “48 Minutes” did a special on"Fatness and Fads; Diets, Dieters, and Deception". The program’s focus was that unless youexercise, apply moderation, and are willing to make your diet a lifestyle commitment there isnothing that will effectively work in keeping pounds off and keeping you healthy.We often look for the divine gracious impartation without the need to exercise anydiscipline to position ourselves to receive directly from the hand of God.Scripture, on the other hand, COMMANDS US to grow up, to be mature and serve God withwisdom, to see Him as the solution and resource to the issues of life. It is our task to lay hold ofgrace: Ps 42:1-11; 2 Timothy 2:1; Hebrews 6:1-3; Hebrews 12:15;7

Look at: Proverbs 3:32-34; James 4:6; 1 Peter 5:5;We cannot walk out the Christian life by ourselves. We absolutely must have God’s graceempowering and enabling us to successfully live the destiny He has called us to.Carnal or Spiritual Christian?Since the fall, all mankind is “dead in trespasses and sins” (Ephesians 2:1-3). The message of theGospel (the Good News) is that God has acted to change all of that. We are Redeemed by Christ(1 Peter 2:21-3:1; 1 Peter 4:1-4) and are no longer to live like those who do not believe(Ephesians 4:17 (NCV)). What do the following verses tell us about how to live?1 Thess 5:23;James 1:19-26; We are to strengthen the things of the Spirit and die to the flesh:Romans 8:5-8;Gal 5:16-18;Phil 3:8-10;Col 3:12-17;Col 4:5-6; What does Paul request and exhort in 1 Thess 4:2-12?“.who also made us adequate [as] servants of a new covenant,not of the letter, but of the Spirit;for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.”2 Cor 3:6 (NASB)8

Disciplines of GraceHow to Walk In The SpiritRobert L. GoldsbyApprehending the BenefitsThe spiritual disciplines are tools which do not, of themselves, guarantee a benefit of grace. Thedisciplines of grace are an inward and spiritual reality where the inner attitude of the heart isthe crucial vehicle for apprehending its many blessings.The Lord is always near to us but we often fail to experience that reality. The practices of thedisciplines of grace focus us on Him and on the reality that He is an “ever present help.” “Everygood and perfect gift (every expression of grace) comes from above, from the father of lights”(James 1:17).We dare not allow ourselves to think of these as good works by which we achieve spiritualbenefits. Turning the disciplines of grace into a set of rules or forms and making them the goal orpurpose will cripple and deform your relationship with God, not enhance it.The Pharisees were great at exercising religious disciplines but Jesus challenged us to a fargreater standard. In Matthew 5:20 He said “For I say to you that unless your righteousnesssurpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.”It isn’t the disciplines (of themselves) that make the difference.It is laying hold of the grace of Godthrough those disciplines of gracethat Father has promised to bless.9

GoldsbyDisciplines of GraceHow to Walk In The SpiritPracticing the DisciplinesThe Outward Disciplines: SacramentsThere has been much heated debate around the term “sacrament.” It has been variously defined8and some prefer the term “ordinance.” Most would agree that Water Baptism and the Lord’sSupper are included in this heading. The benefits of the sacraments (indeed all of the disciplinesof grace) are apprehended by the humility of faith.Water BaptismIt is the duty and privilege of every believer to be baptized as Christ commanded. It identifies thebeliever with Christ in a unique way.It has the full authority of Christ behind it:Matthew 28:18;Mark 16:15-16;It is integral to the discipleship process of the Great Commission:Matthew 28:19;It is the example of the disciples as they obeyed Christ by baptizing those who werebecoming disciples of Christ:Acts 2:38-39;Acts 8:36-39;Acts 9:18;Acts 10:44-48;Acts 16:14-15;Acts 18:8;Acts 22:16;810“ we define sacraments as “rites which have the command of God and to which the promise of grace hasbeen added,.” Tappert, T. Practicing these ordinances/sacraments, then, is a way to “grow in the graceand knowledge of our Lord” (2 Peter 3:18).12

We have copies of the Bible in print, audio and even in video. The Word of God, as He hasprovided it to us (the Bible) is the primary “Means of Grace” and is the primary source for God’spower to transform our lives. As the mind is “fed a steady diet” of the Word it begins to be transformedby it and comes into increasing obedience to the spirit. This obedience creates humility whichpositions us to receive grace. God resists the proud but gives grace to the humble.We see that studying and obeying the Scripture, then, is a way to “grow in the grace andknowledge of our Lord” (2 Peter 3:18).14

GoldsbyPrayerIt has been said that prayer is “conversation with God.” Conversation is something you readilydo with one who is your closest friend, especially when that one has redeemed you from a life oftragedy and separation!When we talk about prayer as a discipline to bring grace into our lives, the need for talking tothat one who supplies grace is obvious. It would be absurd to expect gifts of grace from ourheavenly father when we ignore His constant presence and fail to talk with Him. Considering ourfailures in this area it is amazing we ever experience His grace.One quick word: Prayer is not a matter of informing God about something He is ignorant of, norare we to persuade God to do something He didn’t plan to do. Prayer is partnering with God inaccord with His will and purpose.Prayer - Living In the Throne RoomA helpful tool in learning to pray is the acrostic A-C-T-S. Each letter in the acrostic indicatesa vital element of prayer.A AdorationC ConfessionT ThanksgivingS SupplicationBy following this simple acrostic we are sure to include all of the proper elements of prayer.What is Prayer?1.
