Letter from DianeTeaching Young Artists.Transforming Lives.“Teaching young artists,” the first half of ournew tagline, is straightforward. Teaching art toteens is what we have been doing for over twentyyears. But what about “transforming lives”? Itsounds idealistic, but it is truly what we accomplish over time.Consider the experience of our most recentLucille Ryman Carroll Scholarship winner, ReneeHoward. Freshly graduated from Ryman Arts,Renee is headed to Otis College of Art & Designthis Fall. Renee says Ryman Arts made a hugedifference in her life. Because of challenging family circumstances, she did not attend school forseveral years. Once in high school, her art teacher nominated her for Ryman Arts. As her auntwrote: “When Renee got involved with RymanArts, her artwork truly began to blossom. Shehad natural ability, but no training. Since Reneedidn’t have much social interaction for a longperiod of time, she was very shy and insecure.I’ve noticed through her experience with Ryman, she has become more confident. She gets excitedto show her artwork to people and explains herthought process in great detail. She has learnedso much and received so many opportunitiesthat she never would have known about. Rymantruly opened not only the door of opportunity toRenee, but the door of confidence and a positiveoutlook.”Through Ryman Arts, Renee also won scholarships to summer art programs. Renee wrote,“I was told I had the best portfolio submitted I knew I had Ryman to thank for that. Everyoneencourages us to be our absolute best. Theinstructors are very involved in building skills.Ryman gives us the tools to achieve our biggoals in art. Now that I finished my Ryman Artsclasses, I plan to volunteer at Ryman Arts. I wantto help them as much as they helped me.”This young woman is on her way to a brightfuture, along with the 104 other students whograduated from Ryman Arts this year. All of themare headed to college, and everyone has gainedart skills, positive work habits, and the personalconfidence that transforms lives. I hope you willjoin us in supporting the next class of RymanArts by making a gift today.Thank you from all of us at Ryman Arts,Congratulationsto our 2011Ryman Arts Graduates!Hosted at the California African American Museum, the Ryman Arts Graduation Ceremony and OpeningReception for our annual Student Exhibition took placethis year on June 7th, honoring over 100 graduatingartists.
