What Is An Essential Oil?Plants contain complex and powerful substances known asessential oils. These are aromatic liquids derived from shrubs, flowers, trees, roots, bushes, and seeds. These distinctivecomponents defend plants from insects, harsh environmentalconditions, and disease. They are also vital for a plant to grow, live, evolve, and adapt to its surroundings. Referred to as theessence of the plant, pure essential oils not only protect theplant, but also determine its aroma.Essential oils have been used throughout time dating back to4500 BC. From perfumes and aromatherapy to cooking andmedicinal purposes, essential oils have been used in everydaylife for centuries. In modern days, research shows that pureessential oils can provide similar benefits to humans andanimals that they give to plants.I m p o rta n c e O f Q ua l i t yMany oils, touted as essential oils, are derived with harsh chemicals, diluted,or copied and produced in a lab. Cheap copies bring cheap results and havethe potential to be toxic. Therefore, it is imperative to take great care inchoosing high-quality essential oils.

The Young Living StandardYoung Living offers pure, unadulterated essential oils, essential oil blends, andoil-enhanced products. At Young Living, in-house and independent laboratorytesting shows that our essential oils meet high industry standards that qualifythem as “therapeutic grade.” This means that health professionals choosethem for promoting health and wellness.Young Living is dedicated to producing essential oils from the highest-qualityplants. Healthy plants and proper distillation produce superior essentialoils with powerful benefits. Every oil is put through a series of rigorous testsbefore it is deemed qualified to bear the Young Living label. Our essentialoils are then bottled in dark, thick, glass containers to protect the integrity ofthe oils. Under the lid is a fixed orifice that helps to measure dosages and toensure safety, particularly for young children.l e a d i n g t h e way i n e s s e n t i a l o i l sAfter personally witnessing the amazing difference betweencommon aromatic oils and therapeutic-grade essential oils, D.Gary Young, Founder and President of Young Living EssentialOils, began a personal campaign to protect the legitimacy ofthe ancient healing art of essential oil therapy.Gary’s vast experience, years of study, and guidance from worldexperts became a driving force to restore the proper use ofessential oils. The results? Four herb farms, a unique distillationprocess in the nation’s largest therapeutic-grade essential oildistilleries, and a booming, worldwide company—Young LivingEssential Oils.

How To UseEssential OilsThere are three basic ways to use essentialoils: inhalation, topical application, and internalconsumption. Read the Safety Guidelines and Tipsprior to the use of any essential oil.i n h a l at i o nThe inhalation of essential oils heightensthe senses and can triggernumerous desired responsesin the body. Below areseveral techniquesused to inhaleessential oils: Direct inhalation—simply smell them. Diffuse the oils using a Young Living diffuser which disperses the oil in amicro-fine vapor into the air. The Young Living diffuser will not heat theoils, thus ensuring full benefits, as extreme heat can damage importantconstituents in the oil. Fill a humidifier with water. Put a tissue or small cloth, sprinkled witha few drops of oil, in front of the escaping steam. (Do not put oil in yourhumidifier. It will float on top of the water instead of rising with the watervapor and may cause damage to your humidifier.) Carefully pour hot water into a bowl and add a few drops of oil. Cover yourhead and bowl in a tent-like fashion with a towel. Breathe deeply and slowly.

i n t e r n a l c o n sum p t i o nResearch indicates that some oils are more effective when takenorally. Only pure essential oils, proven safe and labeled as dietarysupplements, should be used internally. Dilution and dosage isdependent on the age, size, and thehealth constitution of the individual.Follow the recommended dosage onindividual product labels to ensuresafety or seek the advice of a healthprofessional before administeringoils internally.Suggested internal consumption methods: Put several drops of oil into an empty capsule and swallow with water. Add 1–2 drops to a glass of water or rice milk. Put 1–2 drops onto a piece of bread or add to your meals when cooking. Add 1–2 drops onto a teaspoon of Blue Agave and swallow. Drop directly onto the tongue and swallow. Exercise extreme cautionwhen using this method. For the responsible use of essential oils, read thecomplete label on each bottle and the following guidelines :The drop reducer orifice located in theoil bottle opening helps you adhere tocorrect dosages as prescribed by healthprofessionals, reputable literature, or aslisted on the label. The orifice also helps prevent smallchildren from accidentally swallowinglarge amounts of essential oil. However, ifyou suspect that a child has consumed alarge quantity of oil, administer milk andseek the advice of a health professional. For younger children, seek the advice ofa health professional before the topicalapplication of any red drop oils (seeapplication chart). When applying a new oil, test one dropon a small patch of skin first (e.g., on theunderside of the forearm).
