Menace ofthe Icy Spire“MENACE OF THE ICY SPIRE” is a DUNGEONS& DRAGONS adventure for five characters of2nd level. The adventure is set in the FORGOTTENREALMS setting near the town of Loudwater in theGray Vale. This adventure is designed to work wellwith the sample adventures found in Chapter 1 ofthe FORGOTTEN REALMS Campaign Guide. In particular, this adventure makes an excellent sequel to Barrowof the Ogre King, which introduces Loudwater andthe surrounding area along with several NPCs whowould make ideal patrons for sending the PCs onthis adventure. However, it is not necessary for thecharacters to have visited Loudwater previously.by Sean Molleyillustrations by Rob Alexander, Ben Wootten and Ron Lemencartography by Kyle HunterTM & 2008 Wizards of the Coast, Inc. Menace of the Icy SpireBACKGROUNDAbout 30 years ago, a dwarf warlock named Draigdurroch came to the Gray Vale. Draigdurrochwas part of a cabal of warlocks, and his particularresearch dealt with the creation of new types ofeldritch pacts. He believed that the Dire Woodcontained a particularly potent source of untappedenergy—the remains of a failed deity. Thousands ofyears before the Spellplague, a Netherese city calledKarse stood in the area, and the demigod Karsus wasits patron. Karsus tried and failed to ascend to fullgodhood, dying in the process, and his city (alongwith the rest of the ancient Empire of Netheril) fellnot long thereafter. Draigdurroch’s research suggested that the petrified remains of Karsus yet liebeneath the forest’s heart. Draigdurroch hoped thathe could tap into the latent energy that Karsus hadaccumulated and use it to power his new pact. Thedwarf warlock built a tower about a mile outside theDire Wood and began his experiments in earnest.Draigdurroch’s hunch turned out to be correct.A powerful nexus of magical energy is beneath theheart of the Dire Wood. However, the fey spirits whodwell within the Dire Wood have long been awareof how dangerous the remnants of Karsus could be ifthe demigod’s power fell into the wrong hands. Theyhave appointed themselves as guardians to ensurethat no one tampers with the failed deity’s restingplace. When Draigdurroch’s efforts began to bearfruit and the dwarf warlock drew upon the latentechoes of Karsus’s power to form a dark pact, the feyapproached him and warned him to cease his meddling. The warlock was confident in his powers andignored the warning. For his temerity, the fey punished him. Draigdurroch was imprisoned within theFeywild and his tower was sealed in a block of magicice as a warning to others. The fey set a powerfulgemstone holding a spirit of winter to act as thekeystone holding the icy barrier. The ritual enacted by the fey was designed to havea limited area of effect—Draigdurroch’s tower wasencased in ice, but the surrounding lands were notsupposed to be affected. Unfortunately, such a powerful spell cannot go unnoticed forever. Draigdurroch’stower contains several small rifts to the ElementalChaos that he had created as part of his arcaneresearch. Recently, a group of ice warriors discovered one of these rifts when they were drawn by thestrength of the cold energy emanating from the gemstone. They have taken up residence in Draigdurroch’stower, finding it a most hospitable environment thanksto the perpetual layer of ice. The warriors have begunto modify the ritual that the fey created, increasing itspower and spreading the effects of the magical frostover a larger area. If they are not stopped, a permanentwinter will come to the entire Gray Vale.ADVENTURE SYNOPSISThis adventure occurs after Midsummer but beforethe end of Highsun. Over the last several weeks, temperatures in the Gray Vale have been droppingto levels that would not normally occur until afterHighharvesttide. Things have not become too dangerous for travelers yet, but to all indications, winter iscoming several months early. If that occurs, the cropswill freeze and die before they are ready to be harvested, putting the entire area’s food supply at risk. The PCs can find precious little information inLoudwater. However, some local woodsfolk reportthat the cold temperatures appear to be more pronounced in the area of the Dire Wood. Rumors eventell of blizzards in broad daylight! Some claim it is thework of evil faeries, but the town’s leaders believe thata more likely source of the problem is DraigdurrochTower. No one has seen or heard from Draigdurrochin 30 years, and the tower’s cursed history is wellknown. The PCs can find a reasonably detailed mapof the area and set out to investigate the tower. The adventurers’ first challenge is the magicallyaltered weather. The ice warriors have manipulatedthe magic of the fey gemstone and have created apowerful snowstorm to shroud the area around thetower. The PCs must overcome a skill challengeto navigate the treacherous wintry hazards. Theirsuccess or failure on this challenge determineswhether they are in a favorable position when theyare ambushed by goblins during a break in thestorm. These goblins have been frost-touched bythe corrupted fey magic, giving them some unusualcharacteristics. After defeating the frost goblins and overcomingthe storm, the PCs arrive at the tower, which is athree-story structure carved with images of demonsand devils (in honor of Draigdurroch’s original infernal pact). The cocoon of ice is still intact, so the PCsneed to find a way to break through before they canenter the tower. When they do, however, they triggersome of the tower’s original defenses, since some ofthe carvings and statues animate and attack.Inside the tower, the PCs discover that everythingis perfectly preserved, as if the warlock had juststepped out an hour ago. Frost covers every surface, but the furnishings and contents of the tower areintact. The ice warriors attack from all sides in arunning battle that spans two floors of the tower.October 20 08 D U N G E O N 1 595

Menace of the Icy SpireThe PCs must deal not only with the main group ofwarriors inside the tower, but also with reinforcements who are coming from the Elemental Chaosthrough small rifts in the fireplaces.Once the warriors have been dealt with, the PCscan ascend to Draigdurroch’s study, where they findhis research notes and rituals, along with a few trapsthat he left to protect his belongings from intruders. Here they discover the truth about the warlock’sefforts to tap into the power of the failed deity Karsus. This provides a way for you to introduce the dark pactwarlock (from the FORGOTTEN REALMS Player’s Guide) toyour campaign if you are so inclined. The PCs canalso learn that Draigdurroch was part of a largercabal of warlocks, so his research might not haveended when the fey cursed him and sealed the tower. At the top of the tower, the PCs discover the truesource of the unnatural weather. The ritual of winteris feeding on itself and growing more powerful by theday. The only way to stop it is to destroy the gemstonethat acts as the focus for the ritual. However, whenthe adventurers attempt to interfere with the gemstone, its guardian creature emerges and attacks. On their way back to Loudwater, the PCs encounterweak chillborn zombies, recently animated by the corrupted winter magic. This is an optional encounter thatallows you to introduce another adventure location ofyour own devising for follow-up adventures. It can safelybe omitted, or you could move it to the first part of theadventure—either before or after the goblin ambush.Adventure HooksThe adventure assumes that the PCs are either basedin Loudwater or have come to the town for somereason. The primary hook is that the PCs are asked toinvestigate the unnatural weather before it becomesRead the following:knows everything in the Adventure Background up tothe point where Draigdurroch disappeared. She didnot know the dwarf personally, but he was reputedto own quite a collection of magic tomes. Thus, inaddition to hiring the PCs to determine if the tower isindeed the source of the early winter, Lady Moonfirealso asks them to bring her any ritual books or othermagic tomes that they discover.Curuvar the Brazen: Loudwater’s residentwizard is a middle-aged human who is normallysuspicious of strangers. However, Curuvar is undera lot of pressure to do something about the changein the weather, since it is “obviously” being causedby evil magic. He is not the adventuring type, andhis own efforts to discover the source of the problemfrom afar have borne little fruit. Despite that, he hasascertained that a powerful magical aura definitelyemanates from the area near the Dire Wood. LikeLady Moonfire, Curuvar is interested in Draigdurroch Tower and asks the PCs to bring him anythingthey discover that might pertain to the warlock’sarcane research.“We would be in your debt if you find the source of thisunnatural winter,” says Lady Moonfire. “If things continueas they have, the crops will die in the fields and Loudwater’snext Deadwinter Day will be a lot more than symbolic. Isuggest you start by investigating Draigdurroch Tower, near the Dire Wood. Considering the tower’s history, I can’timagine it’s just a coincidence. I’m sure that Curuvar cantell you more. Honestly, 30 years is far too long to wait—someone should explore that tower anyway. I’m sure it willbe a grand adventure!”“By Mystra’s lost spell, I’m certain that the tower mustbe connected to this somehow. Nobody knows what thatdwarf Draigdurroch was researching or what triggeredthe calamity that encased his tower in magic ice, but anytime powerful magic is involved, these things have a wayof spiraling out of control. It appears the Dire Wood isdrawing a lot of attention these days. Even if the towerisn’t the source of the problem, perhaps you can find a clueamong the warlock’s notes or possessions. It’s high timesomeone investigated all the ancient secrets in this area.”a serious problem. The PCs might already be knownto some or all the prominent citizens of Loudwater, but even if this is their first visit to the town, they arestill the obvious choice to investigate the early onsetof winter. For more information about Loudwater, seeChapter One of the FORGOTTEN REALMS Campaign Guide. The local farmers are petitioning Lady Moonfire, the civic leader of Loudwater, and Brother Griffon, the head of the temple of Silvanus, to find out what’sgoing on. Suspicion naturally fell upon evil magic, asit usually does in these sorts of cases, which led to theinvolvement of Curuvar the Brazen, Loudwater’s resident wizard. Any or all these three could ask or hirethe PCs to help.Lady Moonfire: As Loudwater’s civic leader, thehalf-elf Lady Moonfire is responsible for the town’sprotection. She has been getting an earful from thelocal farmers, who are concerned about the earlyonset of winter. If the harvest fails, then the entireGray Vale will have a lean winter. As a warlock, Lady Moonfire has long been interestedin Draigdurroch Tower for her own purposes. Menace of the Icy SpireBrother Griffon: The head of the local temple ofSilvanus, Brother Griffon is a stout human of Uthgardtdescent. Although winter is a natural part of the cycleof the seasons and therefore not a bad thing in and ofitself, its early arrival is clearly a perversion of the natural order and as such it is of grave concern to the ForestFather. The balance between the seasons must be preserved. Brother Griffon can introduce the PCs to eitherLady Moonfire or Curuvar the Brazen if necessary.Rumors and Stories: The PCs could get involvedin Loudwater’s troubles through any of the variouslocal residents who have encountered the effects ofthe unnatural weather. An evening spent in the GreenTankard yields all sorts of rumors and wild speculation. Farmers are worried about their crops, whichmight freeze in the fields before the harvest comes in;woodsfolk tell stories of freak snowstorms occurringin the middle of the day and then vanishing as if theywere never there; hunters spread tales of strange blueskinned goblins lurking around the outskirts of theDire Wood. Everyone has a pet theory about what orwho is behind the problems, but mainly, the commonfolk are just worried.Travel Interrupted: If the PCs have no ties toLoudwater and you just want to use the tower as astand-alone adventure site, you could consider starting the adventure with the PCs traveling through theGray Vale on unrelated business, when suddenly theyare struck by the powerful magical blizzard. Becauseof the corrupted fey magic, every attempt that thePCs make to free themselves of the storm leads themaround in circles, back toward Draigdurroch Tower. The only way for the PCs to escape the trap they arecaught in is to make their way to the tower and findout what is causing the unnatural weather.JOURNEY TOTHE TOWERAlthough nobody currently living in town has everbeen to the tower, many have a good idea of its approximate location about a mile east of the edge of the DireWood. It’s less than a day’s travel to reach the towerfrom Loudwater, so the PCs should not need to makecamp along the way. However, given the situation, theymight want to prepare for cold weather. Loudwater hasa general store and an apothecary who can supply allthe basics. The PCs might also think to cast the EndureElements ritual on themselves, or ask either LadyMoonfire or Curuvar the Brazen to cast it for them.J1. The BlizzardAs the PCs depart Loudwater, read the following:The Gray Vale is beautiful in the late summer, although apronounced chill in the air even during what should be thehottest part of the day indicates that something is definitelyamiss with the weather. The first few hours of your journeypass uneventfully, but as you travel through the High Forest, the temperature drops steadily and a sharp wind carries withit the promise of winter, even though the leaves have not evenbegun their annual autumn change.More time passes, until finally the sight of the
