Using This GuideTest-Taking InformationTest-Taking InformationUsing This GuideTaking the SAT is a great way to find out howprepared you are for college and career. The test alsoconnects you to College Board programs and servicesthat can propel you to opportunities you’ve earned.We’ve created this guide to help you: Become familiar with the test so you’re notsurprised or confused on test day. Learn the test directions. The directions foranswering the questions in this guide are the sameas those on the actual test. Review the sample questions. The more familiar youare with the question formats, the more comfortableyou’ll feel when you see similar questions on theactual test. In particular, be sure to practice how toanswer the student-produced response questions onthe Math Test later in this guide. Be aware of what you need to know about taking thistest. You will be asked to agree to the Digital SATTerms and Conditions on page 49 on test day.These Terms and Conditions have information on: How the SAT Is OrganizedThe SAT measures the knowledge and skills you havedeveloped in reading, writing and language, and math.This test is not about memorizing words and factsyou will never use again. Instead, it focuses on whatyou have already learned in school and what you willneed to succeed in college and career. It measures yourreasoning and critical thinking skills, which will beimportant to you through college and beyond.The SAT has 4 tests, including—depending on yourstate—the SAT Essay. The 3 tests that everyone willtake are the Reading Test, the Writing and LanguageTest, and the Math Test. Test-Taking InformationHow the SAT Is ScoredHow the SAT Is ScoredAll multiple-choice questions are scored by giving 1 point for each correct answer. Nopoints are subtracted for incorrect answers or answers left blank. Hard questions countthe same as easier questions. You won’t lose any points for guessing, so try to answerevery question. Requestsfor accommodations are handled by the Services forStudents with Disabilities (SSD) office.Supports such as dictionaries, translated testdirections, and extended time are available for Englishlearners. The process for English learner (EL) supportsdiffers from requesting accommodations for disabilities.If you need EL support, work with your school to ensure itwill be there on test day.IMPORTANT:

The Optional Student Data QuestionnaireWhen considering accommodations, note the following: Work with your school’s SSD coordinator orcounselor for accommodations. Your SSDcoordinator or other appropriate school staff canhelp determine what accommodations are best foryou and submit a request online. If you move to a new school after you’ve beenapproved for accommodations, notify your new schoolof your approval. Print your SSD eligibility letter fromyour student account to give to your new school. If you are approved for extended time for specificsubject areas (math, for example), you’ll only get thoseaccommodations on the relevant sections or tests.However, if you’re approved for extended time forreading, you’ll get extended time for the entire test.Test-Taking InformationYour responses, when combined with those of allother students taking the SAT, contribute to anunderstanding of the academic preparation, extra- andcocurricular involvement, and post-high-school plansof your graduating class, which can help colleges anduniversities deliver programs and opportunities toserve you and your classmates.Sending ScoresYou’ll also have the opportunity when you take the SATto choose up to 4 colleges, universities, or scholarshipprograms to receive your scores for free. (Sending scoresto additional colleges, universities, or scholarshipprograms can be requested for a fee online.) Bring your SSD eligibility letter with you on test dayThe report you receive and the reports received bycolleges and your high school contain total andsection scores that have been converted to a scale from200 to 800. (See How the SAT Is Scored on page 2for more information.) For more information, visit collegeboard.org/ssd.Score Reports Talk to your SSD coordinator or other appropriatestaff member before test day to confirm whataccommodations you are approved for and anyadditional information you need for testing.in case there are any questions.The digital test is accessible to students withdisabilities and, when approved, can be used withassistive technology such as screen readers andrefreshable braille. If you are taking the test withaccommodations requiring the use of assistivetechnology you should try out the approved devicein the secure browser app using the Student DigitalTest Preview setting before test day in order to ensureoperational functionality. Some accessibility featurescan be used by all students. However, if the supportswithin the Student Digital Test Preview don’t meet yourtesting needs, please contact your teacher or counselorto arrange for alternate accommodations or supports.The Optional StudentData QuestionnaireWhen you take the SAT, you’ll have the opportunityto answer questions about yourself, your educationalexperience, and your plans for after you graduatehigh school. While you don’t have to answer thesequestions, we strongly recommend that you do.However, if your parent or guardian has told youthat you shouldn’t provide any optional or voluntaryinformation, you shouldn’t do so.Your responses give your school counselors and collegeadmission officers information they can use to help youplan your future. The more information you provide, themore they can help you.The online score report gives you the meaning behindyour numbers by providing a summary of how youdid on each section. You can access your online scorereport through your College Board account. (If you can’taccess your online score report, your school can print acopy for you.) The SAT online score report contains: Percentiles that let you see how your resultscompare with those of other students like you. A search tool for careers and college majors, withsuggestions based on information you provide inyour profile. The prompt for the SAT Essay (if you took it) and ascanned copy of your response.Score ChoiceIf you take the SAT more than once, you can have theoption of Score Choice . With Score Choice, you canchoose which scores you send to colleges. Chooseby test date for the SAT—but keep in mind that somecolleges and scholarship programs require you to sendall your scores.This online service is optional. If you don’t use ScoreChoice, we’ll send all your SAT scores from your mostrecent 6 administrations. However, if you want onlyyour highest scores to be seen, select Score Choice.Each school or program has its own deadlines andpolicies for how scores are used. Information islisted on the score-sending site for each participatinginstitution, but check with the individual school orscholarship program to make sure you’re following itsguidelines. Thetest that you’ll take on test day is a challenging andfair assessment of what you know and can do. Thequestions you’ll tackle focus on the knowledge and skillsthat the best available evidence indicates are essentialfor college and career readiness and success.and you can opt out at any time. Being contacted by a college or university doesn’tmean you’ve been admitted. You must submitan application to be considered for admission.Student Search Service is a simple way for collegesand scholarships to reach prospective students tolet them know about the opportunities they offer.How Student Search Service Works If you opt in, you may be identified by educationorganizations as a potential match for theirprograms and opportunities.We’re committed to providing opportunities to help youreach your goals for college and career. Students who arethe first in their families to consider attending college,who come from low-income families, or whose ethnicitiesare underrepresented in colleges may feel that collegeisn’t for them. College Board’s Access to Opportunity (A2O ) efforts are designed to identify and break downbarriers that prevent students from applying to andenrolling in colleges that are their best academic, social,and financial fit. Education organizations generally look for groupsStudent Search Service If you have opted in and match the educationStudent Search Service is a free, voluntary program thatconnects students with information about opportunitiesfrom nearly 1,900 eligible colleges, scholarships, and othereducational programs. By joining Student Search Service,you can connect with colleges and scholarship programslooking for students like you and discover opportunitiesyou had not previously considered.Key facts about Student Search Service: You can join for free and hear from a diverse groupof accredited colleges, universities, scholarships,and other nonprofit educational programs. Noother organizations or companies are eligible toparticipate in Student Search Service. When you take a College Board test, you will beasked to provide certain information about yourselfby completing the questionnaire. Some of thequestions are optional; others are required. You’ll have the opportunity to join during thequestionnaire section. It’s entirely up to youwhether to opt in. The service is free to you, buteducation organizations pay us a licensing fee touse the service. We use those fees to support ournonprofit, mission-driven work, including providingfee waivers so that students from lower incomefamilies can take the SAT for free. College Board isa nonprofit organization.4 Being part of Student Search Service is voluntary2022 SAT School DayStudent Guideof students based on expected graduation date,where they live, self-reported cumulative grade pointaverage (GPA), test score ranges, intended collegemajor, geography, and other limited parameters. Thisinformation comes from your SAT Questionnaireresponses and other information you provide toCollege Board. It may also include your college list,if you created one, on the College Board collegeplanning website, BigFuture , at bigfuture.org. College Board never shares your actual test scores,grades, disability status, parent information, ortelephone numbers. Please note we do share testscore ranges and GPA.organization search criteria, we will provide them yourcontact information so they can reach out to you bypostal mail and/or email about their programs andopportunities. They have to keep your data secure andmay not share your data with any third parties (otherthan service providers to the education organization). Be sure to follow the instructions, and usethe official answer sheet to bubble in your answers.2. After you’ve finished the practice test, get instantfeedback and question-by-question results bydownloading the answer explanations and scoringguide for the test you took.Test Day ItemsRefer to the Terms and Conditions on page 49 for alist of items you’ll need to bring for test day.Though not required, consider bringing:Test-Taking InformationTesting Guidelines Plan ahead and bring equipment that’s in goodworking order. Testing staff might not have extrabatteries or calculators. When marking answers: Select the answer-choice radio button or eventhe answer choice itself, ensuring that thebutton is filled in. Where appropriate, enter your answer intothe answer box. Follow the instructionsfor answering student-produced responsequestions in the Math Test. If you are taking the SAT with Essay (offered insome state-provided testing), and you decide notto write the essay, your official score report willinclude an SAT Essay score of zero. Also, if youleave the room before testing ends, your scores willbe canceled. Store any snacks or drinks you bring out of sightin a paper bag under your desk. You may only eatsnacks during breaks. The testing staff will tell youwhere you can go to have your snack.Privacy PoliciesCollege Board recognizes the importance of protectingyour privacy. Please review our privacy policiesat collegeboard.org/privacy-center (“PrivacyPolicies”) and the Digital SAT Terms and Conditionson page 49 to understand our collection, use, anddisclosure of your personally identifiable information.Telemarketing ScamsWe sometimes get reports of phone scams when callersposing as employees of College Board try to sell testpreparation products or request sensitive, personallyidentifying information, such as credit card and SocialSecurity numbers. College Board does not makeunsolicited phone calls or send emails to students orfamilies requesting this type of information. This typeof activity, known as telemarketing fraud, is a crime. Test-Taking InformationTest Fairness ReviewTest Fairness ReviewAll new SAT test questions and complete new editionsof the tests are reviewed by external, independenteducators from throughout the United States.These reviews help ensure that the questions areunambiguous and relevant and that the language usedis not offensive to or inappropriate for any particulargroup of students based on race/ethnicity or gender.Assessment staff ensure that the test as a wholeincludes references to men and women as well as toindividuals from varied racial, ethnic, and culturalbackgrounds. Statistical procedures are used to identifyquestions that are harder for a group of students toanswer correctly than would be expected from theirperformance on other questions in the test; thesequestions are excluded from appearing on tests.Test Question InquiriesIf you find what you consider to be an error or anambiguity in a test question, tell the test coordinatorimmediately after the test. You may also emailsatquestion@collegeboard.org.In your inquiry, provide your name and mailing address,the date you took the SAT, the name and address ofthe school where you took the test, the test section, thetest question (as well as you can remember), and anexplanation of your concern about the question.Additional Terms and Conditions may apply to yourmakeup test.Fee Waiver Benefits forIncome-Eligible StudentsCollege Board offers a number of fee waiver benefitsto income-eligible students who take the SAT. Eligible students may also apply onlinefor nonfederal financial aid from colleges, universities,and scholarships for free using CSS Profile . You must take the entire SAT or SAT with Essay ata makeup test. Access to scores from makeup administrations maybe delayed by several weeks. The Question-and-Answer Service (QAS) isn’t offeredfor makeup tests, even if QAS was available for theoriginal test date. (QAS is a Student Answer Service.) During digital testing, there is always a risk ofdisruption, including, without limitation, computer6issues. College Board has endeavored to put inplace procedures for a complete testing experience.Despite such efforts, you understand that there aresituations where College Board’s only option is toschedule you to test on another day. This is yoursole remedy for such a disruption.2022 SAT School DayStudent GuideIMPORTANT:Verifying Your ScoresAnswer services that tell you more about the testyou took and your responses are explained atsat.org/verify-scores. You can request a morecomprehensive multiple-choice hand score verificationor essay score verification or both, up to 5 monthsafter the test date, by printing and completing aRequest for SAT Score Verification form, available atsat.org/verify-scores. Read the information on the formcarefully before deciding to request this service. There isa fee for this service. Test takers who qualify for incomeeligible benefits may have these fees reduced or waived.

Score ReportingScore ReportingScore reports will be automatically sent to your highschool and to the institutions you choose when youtake the test. The colleges that you choose to receive scorereports will have access to a copy of your essay ifyou take the SAT with Essay. Each time you take the SAT or SAT with Essay, thescores are added to your College Board record. Allof your scores are reported to your high school.Test-Taking Informationthat system will also have access to your score. Pleasenote, however, that if you are applying to more than1 school within a college or university system, it isstill important for you to send your SAT scores toeach individual school. If you are not sure whether thespecific school you are applying to is part of such asystem, contact the school’s admission office.Additionally, if you have decided to participate inStudent Search Service, colleges and universitiesmay identify you to provide you with materialsabout college admission and financial aid. SeeStudent Search Service for more information. You can order additional score reports. They’ll besent to your designated colleges a few weeks afterthe request is received. If you want to change where your scores are sent,you have until 9 days after the published test dateto alter your 4 free score reports at no charge.After that, you’ll be charged the additional scorereport request fee for any added or changed reportrequests.We keep your full score history on file, and we cannotdelete specific scores from your record. For requeststo have a permanent College Board student recordremoved, you must call Customer Service (see insidefront cover) or write to College Board, AttentionCustomer Service.See the Digital SAT Terms and Conditions on page 49for information about canceling scores before they’rereported.Delayed ScoresScores can be delayed for various reasons; we willnotify you if your scores are subject to any unusualdelays. Inaddition, students who have taken the SAT in Californiain December 2021 can review the test questions undersecure conditions at the ETS Western Field Office inSacramento, California, by calling 916-403-2402.Predicting College GradesA primary purpose of the SAT is to determine howprepared students are to succeed, both in college andin career training programs. Extensive research onthe predictive validity of the SAT has established itsutility and value as a College Entrance Exam throughstudies on the relationship between SAT scores andfirst-year grade point average (“FYGPA”), retention,domain-specific course grades, GPA through each yearof college, as well as completion.
