Egypt’sfame throughout the region as the center of filmmakingis well known, and this year we have a selection ofimportant books exploring this genre. DocumentaryFilmmaking in the Middle East and North Africa, editedby Viola Shafik, and The National Imaginarium byMagdy Mounir El-Shammaa cover the long histories ofserious journalism and scholarship on film and illustratethe role of cinema in Egyptian and Arab social, political,and cultural life.
