CAVALIEREThe Robotics Team of Gotham Avenue School will research a realworld problem such as food safety, recycling, energy, etc., andwill be responsible for developing a solution. The innovativedesign and core values components of the competition providestudents with opportunities to research, innovate, and makepresentations using a team-first approach. Students are selectedfor the program through teacher nomination.STUDENT GOVERNMENTGRADES: 4-6FRIDAYSADVISOR: MS. BASCETTAThe Student Government program provides an opportunityfor elected class representatives to participate in school andcommunity activities that focus on civic responsibility, thedemocratic process, and philanthropy. In this program, weorganize school spirit events, fundraisers, volunteeringand community service. Our goals are to unify the school,promote school spirit, and inspire students to be proactive intheir communities. We do this through focusing on teachingleadership skills, providing character education instruction,enhancing public speaking skills, and helping students find their voice. Our motto is– STUDENT VOICES MAKE GREAT CHOICES! Students are nominated in the programthrough classroom elections.MODEL UNITED NATIONSGRADES: 5-6MONDAYSADVISOR: MR. BERNADELThe Model United Nations is a simulation program of the United Nations. In thisextracurricular activity, students play the role of delegatesrepresenting a specific country on a UN committee. Thestudents research current, real world topics. The goal of aModel UN committee is to pass resolutions that resolve theissues being debated. The delegates put their research intopractice by representing their country’s interests andobjectives which are reflected in their resolutions. Inaddition to research, students practice public speaking skills.Model UN will meet every Monday beginning in December.Students are selected for the program through teacher nomination.

SCIENCE RESEARCHGRADES: 6TUES/THURSADVISOR: MR. HUBERThe goal of the Elmont UFSD Science Research Program will be to develop an earlyinterest and love for the sciences and other related STEMfields. Early exposure to STEM instruction develops thefoundation necessary to make the content relevant tostudents’ lives, as well as prepare them for entrance intoSTEM careers. Through this program, students will have anopportunity to investigate areas of interest and conductreal, authentic, scientific investigations, while buildinganalytical and communication skills. Students are selectedfor the program through teacher nomination.CURIOSITY CLUB (SCIENCE) GRADE: K-2MONDAYSADVISOR: MS. SIMMONSHave you ever wondered why the sky is blue or howbirds fly? Together we will explore your every curiosityand will learn about the science world around us. Fromasking questions to performing experiments, get excited toembrace your inner scientist!GOTHAM SPELLING BEE GRADES: 5-6 TUESDAYSADVISOR: MS. HANSEN & MR. BERNADELIn Spelling Bee Club, we introduce selected students of grades four through six tobrand new vocabulary. Additionally, we teach them different strategies for spellingwords, and how to determine word meanings in context. We expand on theirphonemic capabilities and prepare them to speak in public settings. Finally, weenter all the students in the Scripts National Spelling Bee. New this year, the Beehas developed an online testing platform that will allow us to administer our schoolspelling bee while we are learning remotely.

CHESS CLUBGRADES: 4-6MONDAYSADVISOR: MR. DOLANChess Club gives students an opportunity to play friendly gamesof chess against their peers in a low stress environment.Chess is a fun game that incorporates many aspects ofmultiple intelligences. Chess players are knowledgeable,principled, open-minded, caring, balanced, andreflective. The chess club is meant to foster a scholar'sintellectual growth while having fun.BUILDING VOCABULARYTHROUGH LITERATURE (ENL)GRADES: K-4 MONDAYSADVISOR: MS. CONTRERASEveryone loves listening to a good story! This after school club will consistof read alouds and book club discussions. Students will engage inconversations to develop their speaking skills. They will be introduced to avariety of literature that will build their vocabulary.INTERNATIONAL CLUBGRADES: 4-6MONDAYS/THURSDAYSADVISOR: MS. OBANHEINStudents in International Club will explore their ownculture as they create presentations for Gotham Avenue’sInternational Night. Students who participate in dance,music, and art programs that demonstrate talents specificto their own culture are encouraged to join this club. Theclub also welcomes students who are interested in learningmore about their own culture as well as other cultures fromaround the world. All culminating projects and routineswill be showcased at Gotham Avenue’s International Night,date and platform to be announced.

YOGA CLUB BEGINNERGRADES: K-3 MONDAYSADVISOR: MS. J. WALKERYoga Club will introduce your child to yoga in a simple and uniquely effectiveprogram that helps children feel energized, happy, and engaged.The benefits of yoga include improved balance and coordination,learning to use your body in a healthy way, body awareness,and improved concentration. Most importantly, it’s fun and itmakes kids happy!YOGA CLUB INTERMEDIATE GRADES: 4-6 MONDAYSADVISOR: MS. CIQUERAYoga Club will introduce your child to yoga in a simple and uniquely effectiveprogram that helps children feel energized, happy, and engaged. Thebenefits of yoga include improved balance and coordination,learning to use your body in a healthy way, body awareness,and improved concentration. Most importantly, it’s fun and itmakes kids happy!THE STRINGS - ORCHESTRA GRADES: 5-6 TUESDAYSADVISOR: MR. TILLESStudents will have the chance to make music with all their peers who play a stringinstrument. Students will participate in learning new music as an ensemble,selecting program order, and even arranging music. Students will also aid inleading their section in small group rehearsals and learn how to provideconstructive yet positive feedback for improved performance. All participatingstudents are in fifth or sixth grade and play a string instrument. Students musthave their own instrument at home in order to participate.THEATER CLUBGRADES: 2-4 MONDAYSADVISOR: MS. WEBERTheater Club provides students with the opportunity to both learnabout and participate in various parts of theater. Students willexplore topics such as theatre history, popular plays and musicals.Students will also participate in acting, singing and dancingactivities. This club is for any student with an interest in theater, preforming, ortrying something new!

GRAPHIC DESIGN CLUBGRADES: 5-6 TUESDAYSADVISOR: MS. BASCETTAThe Graphic Design Club is a program that will encouragethe computer artist within students. Using programs suchas Photoshop, Sketches, and Keynote, students will learnfundamental design concepts and program componentsthat will instruct them on essential graphic designprinciples.FITNESS FOR LIFEGRADES: 4-6MONDAYSADVISOR: MS. HANLONFitness for Life is an athletic after school program. Fitness forLife encourages students to develop healthy personal goals in afun, motivating way. Fitness for Life will introduce students toconcepts of recognizing the value of meaningful physicalactivity, nutrition, strength and cardiovascular health. We will alsoset individual goals for things to improve. Students can motivatethemselves by writing down their goals and making action plansfor reaching them. Activities will include virtual workouts,healthy meal planning, and mental health exercises.THE ART OF SOUNDS (ART)GRADES: K-2MONDAYSADVISOR: MS. SPINOLAThe Art of SoundsIn this club students will improve their knowledgeof phonics by making meaningful connections throughart. Students will explore letters and sounds to create artand bring sounds to life. Let’s get ready to imagine,create, and explore the sounds of art!AMERICAN SIGN LANGUAGEGRADES: 3-5MONDAYSADVISOR: MS. BASCETTADo you love learning new languages? What about a language where you speakwith your hands? American Sign Language Club promotes awareness of the deafand non-verbal communities, while bringing everyone together through visuallanguage skills. Learn to fingerspell, sign important words, and communicatewith others! Students in Grades 3-5 are welcome to join!

INSTRUCTIONAL SUPPORTMONDAYS/TUESDAYS/THURSDAYSInstructional support will be provided in various grade levels. Students in theseprograms will receive support in phonics, reading strategies, creating meaningfulliterary connections, argumentative writing, and mathematics supports. Studentparticipation in this program is through teacher invitation. The instructionalsupport program will begin in February.
