Glossary of the most important lighting termsAs with any technical or scientific discipline, lightingtechnology has its own special terms and concepts fordefining the characteristics of lamps and luminairesand for standardising the units of measurement. The most important of these are described here.Light and radiationLight is taken to mean the electromagnetic radiationthat the human eye perceives as brightness, in otherwords that part of the spectrum that can be seen. Thisis the radiation between 360 and 830 nm, a tiny fractionof the known spectrum of electromagnetic radiation.Luminous flux Unit of measurement: lumen [lm]Luminous flux is all the radiated power emitted by alight source evaluated with the spectral sensitivity ofthe eye and the photometric radiation equivalent km.Luminous intensity Unit of measurement: candela [cd].Generally speaking, a light source emits its luminousflux in different directions and at differentintensities.Ω Luminous intensity is a measure of theluminous flux emittedin solid angle Ω.Φ0 0 Polar diagram70 70 40 0 0 cd50 6 0 00 c d50 8 0 00 c dThe visible radiant intensity in a particular direction iscalled luminous intensity .10 000 c d30 30 10 0 10 Illuminance EUnit of measurement: lux [lx].Illuminance E is the ratio between the luminous fluxand the area being illuminated.Illuminance EAn illuminance of 1lx occurs when a luminous flux of1 lm is evenly distributed over an area of 1 m2.Luminance LLuminance LUnit of measurement: candelas per square metre [cd/m2].The luminance L of a light source or an illuminatedarea is a measure of the brightness.Area viewedIlluminatedareaObserverLuminous intensityThe most important photometric formulae:Luminous intensity [cd]Illuminance[lx]150ELuminous flux in solid angleSolid angle Ω [sr]Luminous flux falling on area [lm]Illuminated area [m2]Luminance[cd/m2]LLuminous efficacy [lm/W]Luminous intensity [cd]Viewed luminous area [m2]Generated luminous flux [lm]Electrical power consumed [W]

Luminous efficacy Unit of measurement : lumens per watt [lm/W].Chromaticity diagram to DIN 5033Luminous efficacy indicates the efficiency with whichthe electrical power consumed is converted into light.Colour temperatureUnit of measurement : Kelvin [K].The colour temperature of a light source is defined incomparison with a “black body radiator” and plotted onwhat is known as the “Planckian curve”. The higher thetemperature of this “black body radiator” the greater theblue component in the spectrum and the smaller the redcomponent. An incandescent lamp with a warm whitelight, for example, has a colour temperature of 2700 K,whereas a daylight fluorescent lamp has a colourtemperature of 6000 K.Colour appearanceThe colour appearance of a lamp can be neatly definedin terms of colour temperature. There are three maincategories here:Warm White 3300 KCool White 3300–5000 KDaylight 5000 KDespite having the same colour appearance, lamps mayhave very different colour rendering properties owing tothe spectral composition of their light.Colour renderingAs a rule, artificial light should enable the human eye toperceive colours correctly, as it would in naturaldaylight. Obviously, this depends to some extent on thelocation and purpose for which light is required.Extract from the chromaticity digram showing the Planckian curveThe criterion here is the colour rendering property of alight source. This is expressed as a “general colourrendering index” (Ra).The colour rendering index is a measure of thecorrespondence between the colour of an object (its“self-luminous colour”) and its appearance under areference light source. to determine the Ra values, eighttest colours defined in accordance with DIN 6169 areilluminated with the reference light source and the lightsource under test. The smaller the discrepancy, the betterthe colour rendering property of the lamp being tested.HQI/HCI/NDLLUMILUXHQI/N Cool WhiteHQI/DyHQI/HCI/WDLlow-voltagehalogen lampLUMILUXWarm White 830HMI HQI/D 400 WLUMILUX Daylight 865A light source with an Ra value of 100 displays allcolours exactly as they appear under the reference lightsource. The lower the Ra value, the worse the coloursare rendered.xLuminaire efficiencyLuminaire efficiency (also known as light output ratio) isan important criterion in gauging the energy efficiency ofa luminaire. This is the ratio between the luminous fluxemitted by the luminaire and the luminous flux of thelamp (or lamps) installed in the luminaire. For detailed information on indoor lighting with artificiallight, see DIN 5035.Average lifeThe average life of a lamp is an average of the lives ofindividual lamps operated under standard conditions (50%failure average life).Service lifeService life is a simple practical measure of the economicallife of a lamp. It is the number of hours of operation afterwhich the system luminous flux (i.e. the product of therelative luminous flux and the relative proportion of lampsstill in operation) is still around 80% of the initial value.400450500550600650700750Wavelength Daylight spectrum of a BIOLUX fluorescent lamp. The order shall be deemed to be an offer by the Customer to purchase goods and/or services subject to theseconditions. No order shall be deemed to be accepted by the Company until a written acknowledgement of the order is issued by the Company or (ifearlier) the Company delivers goods and/or services to the Customer. These conditions shall be binding on the Customer when the Company acceptsthe order whether or not the Customer has executed the contract.(3.2) Unless expressly agreed in writing to the contrary, these conditions shall apply to all orders placed by the Customer with the Company until furthernotice from the Company to the Customer.4 Acceptance of quotationsThe acceptance of a quotation must be accompanied by sufficient information to enable the Company to proceed with the order forthwith, otherwise theCompany will be at liberty to amend the quoted price to cover any increase in cost which has taken place after acceptance. Any sample submitted with theCompany’s quotation is returnable.5 CataloguesCatalogues, price lists and other advertising matter are only an indication of the type of goods offered and no particulars therein shall be binding on theCompany. All prices quoted therein are subject to alteration or withdrawal from time to time without notice.6 Price(a)All quotations and orders for the general range of goods in current demand are subject to relevant prices and relevant discounts ruling at date ofdespatch.(b)Except as provided in paragraph (a) above, all prices are based on the cost of material, labour, transport and of conforming to statutory obligationsruling at the date of tender, and if between that date and the date on which the goods are dispatched, variations, either by rise or fall, shall occur inthese costs the Company may amend the price to provide for these variations.(c)All amounts payable pursuant to the Contract are expressed exclusive of Value Added Tax (VAT) and any VAT shall be paid at the rate applying at thedate of the Company’s invoice.7 Description of goods(a)All goods will be supplied as specified subject to reasonable availability to the Company of materials.
