Draping EssentialsPreambleThe issues surrounding the practice of draping and positioningare numerous. They include legal, moral, therapist training andpractice and protection of the consumer. Massage & MyotherapyAustralia (M&MA) receives ethical complaints in relation toinadequate and/or inappropriate draping and positioning whichat times are difficult to resolve based on inadequate information, inconsistent practice and poor therapist/client communication.Massage Therapists must recognise, accept and respectthe right of every individual client to choose whether heor she wishes to decline treatment based on the draping andpositioning methods used. Therapists must carefully ensurethat clients are never, in any way, subjected to any form ofpressure whatsoever (either direct or implied) to accept theproposed draping and positioning. This Position Statement is to serve as a context for therapistsfor best draping and positioning practice and a platform fromwhere the National Ethics Committee can make an informeddetermination in relation to any complaints that arise. ThisPosition Statement should be read in conjunction with theM&MA Code of Ethics, Standards of Practice and Drapingand Positioning Practice Guidelines “Draping Essentials”.Appropriate full draping is to be utilised during any massagetreatment and unless modality specific, there is no requirementfor any area other than that being treated, to be exposed. TheM&MA recommends that to avoid discrimination it is suggestedthat any client’s breasts and genitalia be covered at all timeswith towels or in the case of females, a soft bra/bra top.Principles of Draping1.
