In a year of challenges, it has been both challengingand rewarding to make selections from so many beautiful and intriguingsubmissions. The versatile medium of colored pencil affords wide-ranging possibilitiesfor artistic expression, and I have aimed to present an array of different approaches toits use. It lends itself to intricate detail and subtle blending and layering but may alsoinspire looser handling. Although there are techniques like burnishing that an artistmay perfect, and the choice of support can have a profound impact on a drawing, judging the show online has had an equalizing effect to some degree. Technicalproficiency is not always paramount on the computer screen. Had the judging beenin person, some of my choices may have been different, but perhaps not.“As I paged through the 632 entries, I found myself drawn to pieces that moved me—that captured and held my interest and made me feel something. They were expressive, emotive, and creative. As a curator who appreciates work by self-taught makers, aswell as professionals, I value expressiveness highly. As I scrolled through the hundredsof intricate drawings, I found myself longing to see artists loosen up: to free theirhand to move in broad stokes across the paper. In general, I am less interested inpieces in which the artist has tried as nearly as possible to replicate he appearance ofa photograph. I am more concerned with what the artist does to creatively transformsource material into compelling works of art. Is colored pencil the most effectivemeans to convey one’s thoughts and feelings to the viewer? Is the medium used tocreate work that is distinctive and memorable? Drawings in which the artist hasresponded to this year’s realities have a special place in my heart and selections. I hopeyou enjoy contemplating the marvelous and diverse works of art included here.”—Julie Aronson, PhDJAbout Our Jurorulie Aronson has served as Curator of American Paintings, Sculpture and Drawingsat the Cincinnati Art Museum since 1999.
