Letter From Jetsunma Ahkön Norbu Lhamo —Spiritual DirectorCaring for All BeingsAccordingto theBuddha’steaching, allsentient beingsare equal. Inevery sentientbeing from thecockroach to theamoeba to themosquito, tothe caterpillar,to the butterfly, to the elephant, to thehuman being, all have within them theinnate Buddha nature.Knowing this invites us to stand outsideour cultural bias and even our species bias.In other words, we must remind ourselvesthat we are not the only living creatures.Realizing that takes something of a deliberateeffort. Intellectually, we know there areother species. We know that this is a bigworld and that there are other cultures. Itwould seem as though it’s not so important, and it might be a waste of time. I couldn’tdisagree more. We have to ensure that ourcompassion and our concern is not partialand not limited. We have to ensure that wehave empathy for all living creatures.22016 ANNUAL REPORTThis vision includes our human world. We seem to be unaware that we are livingon a planet with people who can havecompletely different ideas from us. In ourmind, it’s almost like we can only stomachpeople that have ideas like ours. I feel thateach one of us should take responsibilityfor gradually developing methods tobecome more and more familiar and moredeeply aware of the equality of all that lives.I recommend becoming very familiar withas many different cultures as you can andunderstanding what motivates the peopleof these cultures.I respect and love all traditions that includecompassion, wisdom and respect. But I amcommitted to the precious method andglorious Lineage Masters of Palyul. Our temple is open to everyone. We needto grow. We need a bigger building. Andif we had a bigger building believe me, wewould grow. I don’t know about you, but Iwant to benefit sentient beings very much.Jetsunma Ahkön Norbu LhamoSpiritual Director,Kunzang Odsal Palyul Changchub Chöling

GarudaAviary is not only a rescue andlifelong sanctuary for parrots that have been neglected, abused and abandoned, butit is committed to educatingthe publicabout thehuge commitment, responsibility anddifficulty ofkeeping parrots as pets, and to addressing the tragiceffects of the inhumane parrottrade. Garuda Aviary is hometo several types of macawsand cockatoos, African greyparrots, Amazon parrots andconures. Each of them has astory — many filled with abuseand neglect. In order to breakthe cycle of suffering, GarudaAviary does not adopt out itsparrots but instead, provides asanctuary until the end of theirnatural lives.
