Chapter 1: How Your Own Mind WorksMan has only one mind, but he has twodistinct phases or functions of the onemind. Each phase is characterized by itsown phenomena which is peculiar to itself. Each of these minds is capable ofindependentaction, aswellassynchronous action. We call one theobjective mind, because it deals withexternal things, and the other is thesubjective mind. The subjective mind isamenable and controlled by suggestion ofthe objective or conscious mind. Theobjective mind takes cognizance of theobjective world. The media of observationare the five physical senses. The objectivemind is your guide in your contact with theenvironment. We gain knowledge throughthe five senses. The objective mind learns

throughobservation, experience, andeducation. The greatest function of theconscious mind is that of reasoning.Look around Los Angeles; you come tothe conclusion that it is a beautiful citybased upon your observation of the parks, the buildings, the beautiful structure, thelovely flower gardens, etc. This is theworking of your conscious or objectivemind. The word objective means that it dealswith objective things. The subjective mindtakes cognizance of its environment bymeans independent of the five physicalsenses. The subjective mind or thesubconscious mind — either term may beused — perceives by intuition. Thesubconscious mind is the seat of your

emotions. We know without a doubt that itperforms its highest functions when theobjective senses are in abeyance. It is the intelligence that makes itselfmanifest when the conscious mind issuspended or in a sleepy, drowsy state. The subconscious mind sees without theuse of the eyes; it has the capacity ofclairvoyanceandclairaudience.Thesubconscious mind can leave the body;travel to distant lands and bring backintelligence oftentimes of the most exactandtruthfulcharacter.Throughthesubconscious mind you can read thethoughts of others, even to the minutestdetails; read the contents of sealedenvelopes and closed safes. The subconscious mind has the ability to

apprehend the thoughts of others withoutthe use of the ordinary, objective means ofcommunication. So, it is of the theconsciousandsubconscious mind, in order to learn thetrue art of prayer. Now there are many terms used indescribing the objective and the subjectivemind. They are, as we told you, called:The conscious or subconscious mind, thewaking or sleeping mind, the surface selfor the deep self, voluntary mind orinvoluntary mind, the male and the female, and many other terms. Remember there isonly one mind having two phases orfunctions. The subjective mind is always amenable

tosuggestion;itiscontrolledbysuggestion. We must recognize that thesubconsciousmindacceptsallsuggestions; it does not argue with you,but it fulfills your wishes. All things thathave happened to you are based onthoughts impressed on the subconsciousmind through belief. The subconsciousmind will accept your beliefs and yourconvictions. It is like the soil; it will accept any seedthat you deposit in it, whether it is good orbad. Remember: Anything that you acceptas true and believe, will be accepted byyour subconscious mind, and brought intoyour life as a condition, experience, orevent.Ideasareconveyedtosubconscious mind through feeling.the

We will use an illustration: The consciousmind is like the navigator or man at thebridge of a ship. He directs the ship, andsignals orders to the men in the engineroom which consists of all the boilers, instruments, gages, etc. The men in theengine room do not know where they aregoing; they follow orders. They would goon the rocks if the man on the bridgeissued faulty or wrong instructions, basedon his findings with the compass, sextant,or other instruments. The men in theengine room obey him, because he is thedirector. They do not talk back to thecaptain; they simply carry out orders. The captain is the master of the ship; hisorders are followed out; likewise, yourconscious mind is the captain, the masterof your ship. Your body and all of your

affairsrepresenttheship.Yoursubconscious mind takes the orders yougive it based upon your belief andsuggestions accepted as true.Another simple illustration is this: Whenyou repeatedly say to people, “I do not likemushrooms,” then the time comes for youtobeservedmushrooms, yougetindigestion, because your subconsciousmind says to you, “The boss does not likemushrooms.” This is an example probablyamusing to you; nevertheless, this is anexample of the relationship between theconscious and subconscious mind. When a woman says, “I wake up at threeo'clock if I drink coffee at night”; whenevershe drinks it, the subconscious mindnudges her, as if to say, “The boss wants

you to stay awake tonight.”The heart is called the subconsciousmind in ancient allegories. The Egyptiansknew that the heart was the subconsciousmind, but they did not call it by that name. The Chaldeans and the Babylonianscalled it by different names. You canimpress your subconscious mind, andyour subconscious mind will express whatis impressed upon it. Any idea that isemotionalized or felt as true will beaccepted by your subconscious mind.If you want a healing, for example, getsilent, relax, breathe easily, immobilizeyour attention, think of the healing powerwithin your subconscious mind; affirm thatthe organ of your body is healing now. Asyou do that, there must be no resentment

or bitterness in your heart; you mustforgive everyone. You can repeat thishealing process three or four times daily.Remember that your subconscious mindmade the body and can heal it also.Peopleareconstantlyaffirmingthehealing of an organ or a part of their body;then ten or fifteen minutes afterwards, they say, “Oh, I am getting worse; I'llnever be healed. I am incurable.” ivetheprevious, positive affirmation. If a surgeon operated on you, cut outyour appendix, and in the next fewminutes ran back and opened you upagain to see how you were getting along;then a half hour later ran back and openedyou up again, he would probably kill you

by poisoning. You kill or prevent yourhealing by using negative statements. There is a subconscious mind within you;you should learn how to use it in the samemanner as a man learns to use electricity.Man controls electricity with wires, tubes, and bulbs, plus his knowledge of the lawsof conductivity and insulation, etc. Wemust learn about the tremendous powerand intelligence within us and use itwisely. Many men are beginning to realize thetrue importance of the subconscious mind.In business many men are using it toachieve success and promotion. Edison,Ford, Marconi, Einstein, and many othershave used the subconscious mind; it hasgiven to them the insight and the “know

how” for their great achievements inscience, industry, and art. Research hasshown that the ability to bring into actionthe subconscious powers has determinedthe success of all the great scientific andresearch workers. There is a tremendousdynamo within you, and you can use it.You can also be completely released fromtension and frustration. You can discoverthe abundant energy within you enablingyou to energize and vitalize all parts ofyour body.We are told, for example, that ElbertHubbard declared that his most importantideas came while he was relaxed, orworking in the garden, or going for a walk;the reason being when the consciousmind is relaxed, the subjective wisdomcomes to the fore. There are oftentimes

inspirational uprushes when the consciousmind is completely relaxed. How often have you wondered at nightwhat the answer to a particular problemwas, and when you turned the requestover to the subconscious mind, it gaveyou the solution in the morning. This is themeaning of the old adage, “Night bringscounsel.” If you want to wake up at seveno'clock in the morning, and you suggestseven o'clock to the subconscious mind, the subconscious mind will wake you atseven o'clock on the dot.A mother may be nursing a sick child, andshe falls asleep; but before she goes tosleep, she suggests to the subconsciousmind that she will awaken if the child'stemperature goes up, or when it needs

medicine, or perhaps cries. There may bea thunderstorm going on while the mothersleeps; yet she is not awakened by thestorm; however, when the child cries, sheis immediately awakened. This is a simplefunction of the subconscious mind.

Chapter 2: The Subconscious Mind &HealthThe subject of mental therapeutics iscreating widespread interest all over theworld at the present time. Man is graduallyawakening to the healing powers residentin his subconscious mind. It is a wellknown fact that all of the various schoolsof healing effect cures of the mostwonderful character. The answer to all ofthis is that there is one universal healingprinciple: namely, the subconscious mind, and one process of healing which is faith. This is why Paracelsus stated this greattruth: “Whether the object of your faith bereal or false, you will nevertheless obtainthe same effects.”It is an established fact that cures have

taken place in various shrines throughoutthe world, such as in Japan, India,Europe, and the American continent. Youwill find many widely differing theories, each presenting indubitable evidences ofhealing. Obviously to the thinker, theremustbesomeunderlyingprinciplecommon to them all. Regardless of thegeographical location, or the means used, there is only one healing principle, and theprocess of every healing is faith. The first thing to remember is the dualnature of your mind. The subconsciousmind is constantly amenable to the powerofsuggestion;furthermore, thesubconscious mind has complete controlofthefunctions, sensations of your body.conditions, and

I venture to believe that all of the readersof this book are familiar with the fact thatthe symptoms of almost any disease canbe inducedinhypnoticsubjectsbysuggestion. For example, a subject in the hypnoticstate can develop a high temperature, flushed face, or chills according to thenatureofthe suggestion given. Byexperiment you can suggest to the personthat they are paralyzed and cannot walk; itwill be so. Pain can also be induced in anypart of the body. By illustration you canhold a cup of cold water under the nose ofthe hypnotic subject, and tell him, “This isfull of pepper; smell it!” He will proceed tosneeze. What do you think caused him tosneeze, the water or the suggestion?

If a man says he is allergic to Timothygrass, you can place a synthetic flower orany empty glass in front of the nose ofsuch a person in a hypnotic state and tellhim it is Timothy grass; he will portray theusual allergic symptoms. This indicatesthat the cause of the disease is in themind; the healing of the disease can alsotake place mentally. We realize that remarkable healings takeplace through osteopathy, chiropractics, medicine, and naturopathy, as well asthrough all of the various churches, but wemaintain that all of these healings arebrought about through the subconsciousmind — the only healer there is.Notice how it heals a cut on your facecaused by shaving; it knows exactly how

to do it. The doctor dresses the wound; hesays, “Nature heals it.” Nature refers tonatural law, the law of the subconsciousmind, or self-preservation, which is thefunction of the subconscious mind. Theinstinct of self-preservation is the first lawof nature; your strongest instinct is themost potent of all autosuggestions. You have just learned that you can inducedisease in your own body, or that ofanother through suggestion, in defiance ofyour natural instincts. It is perfectly naturaland obvious that suggestions in harmonywith instinctive autosuggestion would havegreater power.Itiseasier to maintain and restorehealth, than it is to bring about sickness inthe body. The faith that brings about

healing is a certain mental attitude, a wayofthinking, aninnercertitude, anexpectancy of the best.In the healing of the body, it is, of course, desirable to secure the concurrent faith ofboth the conscious and subconsciousmind; however, it is not essential if theperson will enter into a state of passivityand receptivity by relaxing the mind andbody and get into a sleepy state. I haveknownpeoplewhohavecompletelydenied matter and their bodies; yet theyreceived marveloushealings.Ihaveknown others who said the world was real, that matter was real, and that their bodieswere real; they, likewise, have hadwonderful healings. The point is that any method, technique,

or process you may use, which will bringabout a change in the mind or a newmental atmosphere is legitimate; resultswill follow. Healing is due to a changedmental attitude, or to a transformation ofthe mind.Paracelsus said, “Whether the object ofyour faith be true or false, you willnevertheless obtain the same effects.”Thus, if you believe in the bones of saintsto heal, or if you believe in the healingpower of certain waters, you will getresults, becauseofthepowerfulsuggestion given to your subconsciousmind; it is the latter that does the healing. The witch doctor with his incantationsheals by faith also.Any method which causes you to move

fromfearandworry,to faithandexpectancy, will heal. True, scientific, mental healing is brought about by thecombined function of the conscious andsubconscious mind scientifically directed. The man who denies the ulcer on hishand, though he has one, who evendenies his body, and who says all that isvisible and tangible has no real existencemay get a healing; all of this would beabsurd to you. The question arises, “Howdoes the man get a healing when heprotests against such statements claimingthey insult his intelligence?” The reason isvery obvious when you know how thesubconscious mind works. The man is asked to relax his mind andbody, to get into a quiet, passive,

receptive state; then the objective sensesare partially suspended and in menablethetosuggestion. The practitioner then suggestswonderful words of perfect health whichenter his subconscious mind; the clientfinds immense relief and perhaps acomplete healing. The practitioner is nothandicappedbyantagonisticautosuggestions of the patient arising fromobjective doubt of the power of the healeror the correctness of the theory. In thesleepy, drowsy state of the consciousmind resistance is reduced to a minimum;hence results follow. There are a great number who claim thatbecause their theory produces results, itis, therefore, the correct one; this, as

explained in this chapter, cannot be true. You know there are all types of healing.Mesmer and others healed by claimingtheyweresendingforthacertainmagnetic fluid. Other men came alongand said all of this was nonsense, thatthe healing was due to suggestion. All of these groups, such as psychiatrists, psychologists, osteopaths, chiropractors, physicians, and all churches are using theone universal, healing power resident inthesubconsciousmind.Eachmayproclaim the healings are due to theirtheory. The process of all healing is adefinite, positive, mental attitude, an innercertitude, or a way of thinking called faith.Healing is due to a confident expectancywhich acts as a powerful suggestion to thesubconscious mind releasing its healing

potency. One man does not heal by a differentpower than another. It is true he may havehis own theory and method. There is onlyone process of healing, and that is faith;there is only one healing power, namely, your subconscious mind. Select the theoryand method which you prefer. You canrest assured, if you have the faith, youshall get results. In the Los Angeles Examiner some timeago, John McDowell described tests beingconducted in prayer-therapy at RedlandsUniversity under the title, “PsychosomaticTests Bare Prayer's Power.” He writes asfollows: “Dr. William R. Parker, 37-yearold director of the clinic, today revealed forthe first time that early results of prayer-

therapy in a group of twenty arthritic, tubercular, ulcer, and speech impedimentpatients have been favorable.“These patients, who agreed to practiceprayer-therapy in addition to the hologicalmakinggreaterprogress than the clinic's regular patients,Dr. Parker said.“For example: A stomach ulcer patient, relyingsolelyonprayerandgrouptherapy, has reported that, for the lastthree weeks, all symptoms of his ailmenthave disappeared.“A Redlands University professor, afflictedmost of his life with a severe case ofstutteringwhichyearsofvarioustreatments failed to correct, today has no

trace of speech impediment after sixmonths of prayer-therapy.“Another teacher, forced into retirement ayear ago because of tuberculosis, is nowback at his teaching job, apparently cured.“'This man's doctor, — a tuberculosisspecialist — recently gave him a sputumtest, Dr. Parker said. 'The test turned upnegative, and the doctor was certain amistake had been made. He immediatelymade another test, and that was negative,too.'“Dr. Parker — a doctor of psychology, notmedicine — stresses that prayer-therapyis no 'quackish' miracle cure-all, but ascientific approach to prayer and its effecton the subconscious mind.

“The subconscious mind, in the eyes ofthestill-pioneeringpsychosomaticmedicine world, is the fountainhead ofmany of mankind's afflictions, is, tuberculosis, ulcers, and highblood pressure.“Thepsychosomatictheory—hotlydisputed by the medical profession — isthat such ailments start as anicdisease, andwhichdoctors treat by attacking the symptomsrather than the cause.“Prayer-therapy, according to Dr. Parker,is a psychosomatic attempt to attack thecausesofsubconscious.thesedisordersinthe

“'Four basic personality difficulties are atthe root of everything that goes wrong inthe subconscious mind, Dr. Parker said.'They are fear, hate, guilt, and ents, these basic difficulties arefirst ferreted out through a series ofstandard psychological tests given topatients participating in the project.“Subsequently, the patients meet in aninety-minute group session once a weekto discuss their problems. At thesemeetings, each patient is given a sealedenvelope containing information on onedetrimental aspect of his or her personalityuncovered in the tests.“Once at home, the patients open theenvelopes, learn a new, undesirable

phase of their personality, and resolve thatparticular difficulty in prayer daily until thenext group meeting. There is only one'must.' Each patient is required to prayregularly each night before he or sheretires.“We insist on a prayer at that time, because the last thing that a person isthinking before going to sleep is mostlikely to penetrate to the subconscious,”Dr. Parker said.“Dr. Parker, who first tried out his prayertheories on himself during an onset ofulcers three years ago, said most of thepatients have to be taught how to pray.“The clinic's prayer-therapy patients aretaught a positive approach to prayer, stressing love, and an uplifting concept of

God and the universe.“Our prayers are not a begging for health, but are affirmations of the healing of theunhealthy element the patient wants toattack stated in such a positive, repetitiousmanner that eventually it sinks into thesubconscious and becomes a part ofthat ly overcome, thus eliminating thebasic causes of their physical ills.”In the Wilshire Ebell Theatre where Ispeak to an overflow audience eachSunday, we have a period called “thehealing silence.” The first thing I do is askthe audience to relax, let go, and to stop

the wheels of their mind. The purpose is toquietdownthedoubtingThomas(conscious mind), and insert a new ideasuchashealth, peace, joy, andabundance into the receptive minds of thelisteners. Those who are impregnated willgive birth to a healing or an answer totheir prayer. This is the kinetic action ofthe subconscious mind. Many reportexcellentresultseverySundayasattested to by grateful letters. I would liketo stress a few important factors hererelativetotheworkingsofthesubconscious mind. A man came to meone time and asked me why it was whenhe kept on saying to himself, “I have noheadache,” that the pain did not go away? The subconscious mind will not easilyaccept this contradiction; it accepts only

what you believe and feel as true, oraccept, aspossible. If you mentallyaccept the possibility of the execution sswillthesubconscious mind, you must gain itscooperation. If you can convince thesubconsciousmindyouhavenoheadache, the headache will go away.I suggested to him this method: Declare:“It is passing away,” over and over againquietly and peacefully. In this way hewould be better able to sell the idea orconclusion to the wise, deep self, calledthe subconscious mind. He got results; headded something to it, “It will neverreturn.” For years he has never had anymigraine attacks from which he sufferedfrequently.Hehada belieforan

expectancythateveryTuesdayandSaturday morning, he would get migraineattacks.Thisfeelingactedasanautosuggestion to his subconscious mind;the latter obliged him by seeing to it thathe would have a headache at the timespecified. It simply said, “It is Tuesdaymorning; the boss wants a headache.”The negative suggestion was removed bythe above counter suggestion. Here is another instance: A very brilliantwoman came to me some years agostating that she had psoriasis on herbody which would go away by applying anointment, but that as soon as the salvewas discontinued, it would return. Shewas not resenting anyone; she was veryreligious, and seemingly well balancedemotionally. In talking to her I discovered

that she lived in constant fear of its return. As a matter of fact, this was a verypowerful suggestion to her subconsciousmind, since it is controlled by suggestionand belief; it responded accordingly. Shewould affirm two or three times a day: “Iam whole, pure, and perfect; my skin isperfect; I am healed.” Nothing happened. You can readily see what happened in hercase. Every time she said, “My skin isperfect,” it started a quarrel in her mind;something within her said, “No, your skinis not perfect!”The following technique worked for her ina wonderful way. She started to say forfive or ten minutes three or four times aday: “It is changing now for the better.”This created no quarrel in her consciousor subconscious mind; results followed; it

gradually disappeared, and it has neverreturned.Iamsuresheceasedsuggesting its return. (What I fear mosthas come upon me).Trust the subconscious mind to heal you.It made your body, and it knows all of itsprocesses and functions. It knows muchmore than your conscious mind abouthealing and restoring you to perfectbalance.Thesubconsciousmind, sometimes called the deep self, knowsmore about your body than all of thewisest men in the world. Never try tocoerce or force the mind. We do not inferthat some people who say, “I am whole, pure, and perfect,” do not get results; ofcourse they do, because they succeed inconvincing themselves of it. Blind beliefand faith will bring results due to the

subjective faith of the individual.A psychologist friend of mine told me thatone of his lungs was infected. X-rays andanalysisshowedthepresenceoftuberculosis. At night before going tosleep, he would quietly affirm, “Everycell, nerve, tissue, and muscle of my lungsare now being made whole, pure, andperfect. My whole body is now beingrestored to health and harmony.” Thesearenothisexactwords, buttheyrepresent the essence of what he said. Acomplete healing followed in about amonth's time; subsequent X-rays showeda perfect healing.I wanted to know his method, so I askedhim why he repeated the words prior tosleep. Here is his reply: “The kinetic action

ofthesubconsciousmindcontinuesthroughout your sleep-time period; hencegive the subconscious mind somethinggood to work on as you drop off intoslumber.” This was a very wise answer. Insuggesting harmony and health, he nevermentioned his trouble by name.I strongly suggest that you cease talkingabout your ailments or giving them aname. The only sap from which theydraw life is your attention and fear ofthem.Liketheabove-mentionedpsychologist, become a good mentalsurgeon; then your troubles will be cut offlike dead branches are pruned from a tree.If you are constantly naming your achesand symptoms, by the law of your ownmind these imaginings tend to take shape,

greatly feared.Atechniqueofimpressingthesubconscious mind is as follows: Thisconsistsessentiallyininducingthesubconscious mind to take over yourrequest as handed it by the hed in the reverie-like state.Know that in your deeper mind is infiniteintelligence and infinite power. Just calmlythink over what you want; see it cominginto fuller fruition from this momentforward. Be like the little girl who had avery bad cough and sore throat. Shedeclared firmly and repeatedly, “It ispassing away now. It is passing awaynow.” It passed away in about an hour.Usethistechniquesimplicity and naiveté.withcomplete

In using the subconscious mind, you inferno opponent; you use no will power. Youuse imagination, not will power. Youimagine the end and the freedom state. You will find your intellect trying to get inthe way, but persist in maintaining asimple, child-like, miracle-making faith.Picture yourself without the ailment orproblem.Imaginetheemotionalaccompaniments of the freedom-stateyou crave. Cut out all red tape from theprocess. The simple way is always thebest.Remember that your body possesses anorganic mechanism reflecting the interplayof the conscious and subconscious mind;viz., the voluntary (cerebro-spinal nervoussystem) and the involuntary nervoussystem. These two systems may work

separately or synchronously. The vagusnerve connects the two systems in thebody. When you study the cellular systemand the structure of the organs such aseyes, ears, heart, liver, bladder, etc., youlearn they consist of groups of cells whichpossess a group-intelligence wherebythey function together and are able to takeorders and carry them out in deductivefashion at the suggestion of the mastermind (conscious mind). This is why thegroup intelligence of the lungs respondedto the constructive, positive suggestions ofthe psychologists previously mentioned inthis chapter. In this book our purpose is to remove themystery of the workings of the mind, inorder to know better its modus operandi. In the relaxed state the subjective mind

comes to the surface and begins to workon the correct patterns suggested by thehealer. The kinetic action of the mindcomes into play by way of the vagusnerve. Between sleeping and the wakingstate the mind breaks through from itsmaterial thraldom and the limitations oftime and space and asserts its innatefreedom.Dr. Evans, a student of Quimby, was ableto suspend the conscious mind, and by aninterior illumination, attended with no ldiagnosedisease.Clairvoyance is one of the powers of thesubconsciousmindwhichenabledQuimby, Dr. E
