First reading – 2 Corinthians 7 – Anthony Szabo, Sam Jaeschke7 Therefore, since we have these promises, dear friends, let us purify ourselves fromeverything that contaminates body and spirit, perfecting holiness out of reverence forGod.2Make room for us in your hearts. We have wronged no one, we have corrupted noone, we have exploited no one. 3 I do not say this to condemn you; I have said beforethat you have such a place in our hearts that we would live or die with you. 4 I havespoken to you with great frankness; I take great pride in you. I am greatly encouraged;in all our troubles my joy knows no bounds.5For when we came into Macedonia, we had no rest, but we were harassed at everyturn – conflicts on the outside, fears within. 6 But God, who comforts the downcast, comforted us by the coming of Titus, 7 and not only by his coming but also by thecomfort you had given him. He told us about your longing for me, your deep sorrow, your ardent concern for me, so that my joy was greater than ever.8Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret it. Though I did regret it – Isee that my letter hurt you, but only for a little while – 9 yet now I am happy, notbecause you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. Foryou became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way byus. 10 Godly sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, butworldly sorrow brings death. 11 See what this godly sorrow has produced in you: whatearnestness, what eagerness to clear yourselves, what indignation, what alarm, whatlonging, what concern, what readiness to see justice done. At every point you haveproved yourselves to be innocent in this matter. 12 So even though I wrote to you, itwas neither on account of the one who did the wrong nor on account of the injuredparty, but rather that before God you could see for yourselves how devoted to us youare. 13 By all this we are encouraged. In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see howhappy Titus was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you. 14 I had boasted tohim about you, and you have not embarrassed me. But just as everything we said toyou was true, so our boasting about you to Titus has proved to be true as well. 15 Andhis affection for you is all the greater when he remembers that you were all obedient, receiving him with fear and trembling. 16 I am glad I can have complete confidence inyou.

Second reading (10.30) / Psalm (8.30) – Psalm 51 – Corporate reading, Carley DaviesFor the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to himafter David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.1Have mercy on me, O God,according to your unfailing love;according to your great compassionblot out my transgressions.2Wash away all my iniquityand cleanse me from my sin.3For I know my transgressions, and my sin is always before me.4Against you, you only, have I sinnedand done what is evil in your sight;so you are right in your verdictand justified when you judge.5Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.6Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;you taught me wisdom in that secret place.7Cleanse me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.8Let me hear joy and gladness;let the bones you have crushed rejoice.9Hide your face from my sinsand blot out all my iniquity.10Create in me a pure heart, O God,and renew a steadfast spirit within me.11Do not cast me from your presenceor take your Holy Spirit from me.12Restore to me the joy of your salvationand grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.13Then I will teach transgressors your ways,so that sinners will turn back to you.14Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God,you who are God my Saviour, and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.

15Open my lips, Lord, and my mouth will declare your praise.16You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.17My sacrifice, O God, is a broken spirit;a broken and contrite heartyou, God, will not despise.18May it please you to prosper Zion,to build up the walls of Jerusalem.19Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous,in burnt offerings offered whole;then bulls will be offered on your altar.Third (10.30) / Second (8.30) reading – Luke 5:27–32 – Patricia Le Plastrier, Chen Jin27After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector by the name of Levi sitting at histax booth. ‘Follow me,’ Jesus said to him, 28 and Levi got up, left everything andfollowed him.29Then Levi held a great banquet for Jesus at his house, and a large crowd of taxcollectors and others were eating with them. 30 But the Pharisees and the teachers ofthe law who belonged to their sect complained to his disciples, ‘Why do you eat anddrink with tax collectors and sinners?’31Jesus answered them, ‘It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but those who areill. 32 I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.’
