Joe Purkhiser.(this is the day before our Specialty)These shows will offer trophies in conformationand obedience. Let!s have some nice entries! The AKC Companion EventsDepartment has announced newenhancements to the AKC Rally program. The AKC Rally program has not hadany changes to the class structure since itslaunch in 2005.AKC writes: “Over the years we have heard frommany rally handlers who have won the RallyNovice title, saying they are not ready to moveup to the Advanced level class, which requiresthe dog to work off-leash. AKC has created anew class and title for dogs that have won theRally Novice title, but have not yet earned aqualifying score in the Advanced class. TheRALLY INTERMEDIATE class and associatedtitle (RI), will provide a stepping-stone class tohelp prepare teams for the off-leashperformance required in the Advanced class. The Intermediate course is a mirror image of theAdvanced course without a jump. All exercisesare on-lead. It is the Novice exhibitor!s choice totake advantage of this additional opportunity andthe RI title is not required to enter the Advancedclass. We have also listened to the Rally Fancywho have long asked for a champion level title. We are excited to announce the new RALLYMASTER class and associated title (RM), aswell as the RALLY CHAMPION title (RACH),both of which will provide additional challengesfor dedicated rally exhibitors. The criteria to earn the RACH title (sounds like“ROCK”) requires the team to earn 20 triplequalifying scores; qualifying in the Advanced B,Excellent B and Master classes at the same trial,at 20 separate events, plus earn 300 RACHpoints from the Excellent B and Master classes.Points are determined by a dog!s score. At least200 RACH points must be earned from the RallyMaster class. Please review the full details of these programenhancements at this the AKC Rally News and Updates page) andshare this information with your club membersresponsible for managing your rally events.Clubs may start to apply for events with thesenew classes on August 1, 2017 for events heldon or after November 1, 2017.”5

Where’s Julius? From Andy KingeryI was asked this a few times after Julius was absent from all shows in Februaryincluding Westminster.Answer: At the same time the Standard Schnauzers were entering the show ring inNew York, Julius was being wheeled into surgery at the VOSM (Veterinary SportsMedicine Group) orthopedic hospital in Annapolis Junction, MD. Suspicion: cancer.Result: He had a toe removed and was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma. The surgeon got it allwith good margins; his prognosis is excellent. He was fortunate. What a shock! My much loved and very healthy dog was only 5 years and 10 months old. Who wouldhave thought cancer anywhere? It was a learning experience and tough journey to get this taken care of.There are two main types of toe cancer in dogs: squamous cell carcinoma (the most common) andmalignant, or digit, melanoma. Of the two, the first if caught in time is survivable. The second, from mystudy and observation, is not survivable. It doesn!t seem that the two cancers are connected in any way,nor are they inherited. They do not run in families. It is more a breed problem than a family connection. It seems that the dogs with darker skin are more prone to both cancers. I am also hearing from vets thatboth cancer types are increasing. I asked a specialist if this was predominately found in show dogs (theywalk over everything). He said no. They see this in dogs that never leave their yards. The signs vary. Usually the nail shows some trauma, such as shredding or breaking easily, or lumps withoozing appear at the base of the nail. Generally the toe swells. Though infection is often a possibility, thepaw has a poor blood supply and even toes with infections are sometimes removed because they won!theal. This is found across all breeds. In Julius! case, his nail looked fine; he just suddenly started limping. I assumed this was due to a softtissue injury in his leg or shoulder and restricted his activities and gave him Rimadyl for a few days. There was no improvement. I immediately took him to his regular vet and then to the orthopedicspecialist that I have known for years. No one mentioned cancer. We assumed he had injured or cut hispaw in the yard and had an infection. However, there was no improvement with two strong antibiotics. We had to do a biopsy, and decided that depending on what the surgeon found, he would remove the toeif he thought that was the best thing to do. The vet took a look, studied a slide, and removed the toe. Ithad taken four weeks total to reach this point. I was very worried we might be too late. They could tell from the surgery and examination of the toe that it had not spread into the blood supply orelsewhere. Earlier we had done a chest X-ray just to be on the safe side. Squamous cell carcinomagoes into the lymph glands; melanoma goes to the lungs. They immediately knew it wasn!t an infection, but weren!t sure what type of cancer it was. As I waited forthe final path report (which took more than a week), I was terrified he might have melanoma. It was sucha huge relief that he did not, I almost cried. This is something that we all need to be aware of. In our breed club over the last few years, I know ofthree dogs who died of digit melanoma and four who have survived squamous cell carcinoma. I haveJulius!s little daughter and have asked if she is now more at risk because of her Daddy. I was told NO.She is at risk because she is a Standard Schnauzer.Julius! toe was a center weight-bearing toe on a front paw. His gait may never be quite so good again, but he can now run and play without pain and should hopefully live a long, healthy life. As I said, he hasbeen most fortunate! And so have I.Now I can finally have my knee surgery and we will be out training in obedience this summer. That, I amlooking forward to doing!6

It isconveniently located, has a nice private room(albeit with rather warlike decorations) and, untilrecently, their tasty meals were affordable.14 Count ‘Em!Unfortunately Alfio!s is under new management, and they have raised the banquet menu pricesconsiderably, as you will note from the menu onpage 12. Even these prices reflect a lot ofnegotiation on the part of Hospitality ChairMelissa Jennings, as well as the club picking upgratuity and tax this year.So we are – reluctantly – looking for a new sitefor PVSSC events. Requirements are: Private room Convenient location, ideally close tomajor roads Appealing menu at affordable pricesWe also would like the restaurant owners to beinterested in hosting us! That is, cooperative! We hope members can help us, for example, ifyou belong to another organization that has agood event locale. If you know of a possible site, please contact MELISSA JENNINGS at 701497-2985 or jay jennings@verizon.net7
