From the Editor,Sincerity in our communication and relationships with others is an essential characteristic of the personalintegrity Mary Ward envisaged. Her ideal was that we should “be such as we appear and appear such aswe are.” (www.loreto.org.au)When each edition of Verity is planned it is always a difficult process deciding on which stories andexperiences of our Loreto Community to include because each have their own impressive features, qualities and values that make them worthy. This edition was particularly difficult because above all, each option was a true example of this Mary Ward value of Sincerity. The edition features the experiences of a group of the Class of 2018 and staff who took part in thealternative to schoolies trip to Timor-Leste. They travelled through the country to several primary schools, kindergartens and secondary colleges to teach English and connect with the communities.Another feature in this edition is a beautiful story about Sr Caroline Deutscher ibvm who took herOrder of Loreto in Ballarat in 1941 and last year celebrated her 80th year of religious service.Sr Caroline dedicated her life to teaching, only retiring eleven years ago at age 89, her sincerity foreducation saw Sr Caroline dedicate her life to the profession of teaching in primary and tertiary education. There is also the remarkable story of Year 12 student, Shannyn Bourke who has demonstrated grit, resilience and determination while always remaining honest and true to herself down her pathway ofthe martial art, Taekwondo. This collection of stories and reflections of the Loreto Community truly exemplifies Mary Ward’svalue of Sincerity. For our next edition, our theme will be based on the value ‘integrity’ as we further exploreMary Ward’s vision of Sincerity.Shona Hendley and the Marketing & Development Team4

From the PrincipalOur 2019 school year formally commencedon 1 February with the Opening of theSchool Year Mass, celebrated by BishopPaul Bird. College Captains, HannahAugustine and Tessa Canny, shared insightsinto the value of Sincerity. Bringing thevalue of sincerity as words on a page tolife through modelling this in our dailylives calls each of us to take a countercultural approach, modelling integrity andinclusiveness in our words and actions.Sincerity in our communicationand relationship with others isan essential characteristic of thepersonal integrity Mary Wardenvisaged. Her ideal was that“we should be such as we appearand appear such as we are”.Self-acceptance sets us free from pretenceand defensiveness, free to relate honestlyand affectionately, to “love our neighbouras ourselves”. This is a challenge for all ofus, involving commitment to the on-goingprocess of self-knowledge which leads toself-acceptance. (Loreto Schools of AustraliaMission Statement)A Loreto education supports, guides, encourages and challenges our studentsto develop a deep confidence in self thatfrees each to be ‘comfortable in theirown skin’, deepening their awareness of,and engaging confidently in, the worldbe inspired by Mary Ward’s vision andby Dr Hadebe, calls us to be people ofaround them.
