motor vehicle crashes are thenumber one cause of death among13- to 19-year olds

in their first 6 months of gettingtheir license, 1 out of every 516-year-olds has an accident.

approximately 1 million teenagedrivers were involved in vehiclecrashes in 2009

GDL consists of three stages :learner’s permit intermediate (provisional) license full licensure

All 50 states have enacted some formof graduated driver licensing

For example, Michigan’s GDL lawshave shown a 26 percent reductionin crashes involving 16-year-olddrivers

A: Two major risks for new driversare:1) having multiple passengers in thecar--the more passengers, the greaterthe risk2) driving at night--the risk of a fatalcrash is three times higher at night,for every mile driven

A: Slow down--besides limitingpassengers and night time driving,teenagers need to slow down More than 1/3 of teenagers who diedin car crashes last year died in aspeed-related crash

one last tip: cell phones--respect them the most common distraction forteenagers while driving is probablycell phones pull over to the side of the road orinto a parking lot when using yourphone
