I nt ro du ct i o n“If Christ had been too proud to die, he could not havehelped us whose basic sin is pride. So Paul and othersargue that by giving Himself up without pride, Christmakes up for Adam’s sin of arrogance. If all this is trueit comprises certainly the most momentous fact ofhuman existence. Christ the free therapist for humanity, bringing salvation as a gift of grace-that indeed is adaring postulate.”– Rollo May“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of Godis at hand; repent and believe in the Gospel.”1– JesusYou have just made the greatest decision of yourlife, or maybe you are still considering what becoming aChristian really means. CHAP T ER O N EREDEMP T ION H IS TORYWe have learned from history that most people haven’tlearned much from history. Those who don’t learn aredoomed to repeat the same failures over and over again. Those who have learned the truth from their forefathersknow that history is His-story of unfolding grace and lovefor all humanity. In order to understand what His planis for you, we need to start at the beginning of humanhistory.T H E C RE AT I O N“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth,”5are the first words in the Bible. God is a Spirit and isinfinite, eternal, and unchangeable in His wisdom, powerand holiness. He existed when the physical world was13

ThenGod created Adam in His image, and together with Evethey were to rule over the birds of the sky, the beasts ofthe field, and the fish of the sea.6 They had dominionover the rest of creation and were to be fruitful in orderto multiply and fill the earth. They were physically alive, which means their souls were in union with their bodies. They were spiritually alive; therefore their souls were inunion with God. Because they were created in the imageof God, they could think, feel, and make choices, unlikeall the other creatures that are physically alive, whichfunction by divine instinct.Adam and Eve were safe, secure, and significant. They had a sense of belonging to God and to each other. They were naked and unashamed because they hadnothing to hide and therefore no need to cover up. Adamand Eve were welcomed to eat from the Tree of Life andlive forever by remaining in union with God.Prior to the creation of humanity, a magnificentangel named Lucifer rebelled against the Creator Godand fell from heaven, taking a third of the angels with him.Lucifer means light bearer, but he no longer reflected theglory of God. He became Satan, or the devil, and ruledover his brood of fallen angels, known in the Bible asdemons. Jealous for the significant position Adam andEve were given, Satan tempted Eve to eat the forbiddenfruit. She in turn persuaded Adam to do so, and togetherthey sinned by rebelling against God.14

RED EMP T I ON H I S TORYT H E FA LLThe consequences were immediate. Adam and Eve diedspiritually. Sin had separated them from God. Their soulswere no longer in union with their Heavenly Father. Theyremained physically alive, but physical death would be aconsequence of their sin as well.Adam and Eve were left to make a name forthemselves and to find their purpose and meaning inlife independent of their Heavenly Father. They had torely on their own strength and resources because the lifeof God was no longer within them. They were like carswithout gas and struggled to find purpose and meaningin life in their natural state, which is still true to this dayfor those who don’t have a relationship with God.Every car has a battery that provides a spark of life,so the natural person tries to find their purpose in thebeauty of the car, or the comfort of the seats, or the soundof the stereo, or the lights, or the noise of the horn, butthat is not what the car was created for. The purpose ofautomobiles is to supply transportation. Without gas theymay look, sound, smell, and feel good, but they cannotfulfill their purpose for which they were created, andneither can we unless we have the life of Christ withinus. As a consequence of the fall, every naturaldescendant of Adam and Eve is born physically alive, but spiritually dead.7 In addition, the whole world wasaffected by their rebellion, and all creation is groaningand looking forward to a day of redemption.8 That day is15

RESTORED – EX P ERI ENC E LI F E WI T H J ES UScoming because God immediately cursed the devil andpromised that a descendent of Eve would bring forth aSavior that would crush the head of Satan.9God’s plan was to first show all humanity theirneed for a Savior. He revealed our need by instituting asacrificial system to show us that somebody had to paythe penalty for our sins, and through Moses God gave usa moral law to govern our behavior. However, no animalsacrifice could give us spiritual life, and nobody could liveaccording to the law. So He sent prophets encouragingHis people to live righteously according to the laws ofGod. These prophets also revealed God’s word to us andrecorded the history of God’s redemptive plan. There are39 books in the Old Testament that record the historyof creation and the fall of Adam and Eve. They revealhumanity’s futile attempts to find purpose and meaningin life and live independently of God.God called Abraham out of the Land of Ur, whichis the land of present day Iraq, and into the promised landof Israel. With Abraham, God made an unconditionalcovenant, promising that through him and his descendentsall the nations of the earth would be blessed. The Messiahwould come from one of His descendents. Through theprophet Moses, God made a conditional covenant of law, promising to bless those who kept it, but none could. Forcenturies God’s chosen people tried unsuccessfully to liveunder the law, which proved to be a taskmaster that wasintended by God to lead us to Christ,10 the promisedMessiah.16

RED EMP T I ON H I S TORYT H E G OS P ELWhen it looked liked there was no hope for humanity, and when the time was just right, God sent Jesus HisSon. Jesus was supernaturally born of the Virgin Maryand, like Adam, was born both physically and spirituallyalive. Jesus is the pre-existent Wordof God who became flesh and dweltAll temptationamongst us. Jesus is co-equal withis an attemptthe Father and the Holy Spirit, andto get us tolive our livestogether they make up the Oneindependentlytrue God. While on this earth Jesusof God.remained fully God, but He was alsofully human. No person can becomeGod, but God can and did manifest Himself in humanform. Jesus came for three primary reasons.First, He came to give us an example to follow inHis steps. Jesus showed us how a spiritually alive personcould live a righteous life. He did so by demonstratinga life totally dependent upon His Heavenly Father.11All temptation is an attempt to get us to live our livesindependently of God. Jesus was tempted in all ways, butunlike Adam, He never sinned. His sinless perfection waswhat made Jesus the only possible sacrifice for our sins.No other animal or human sacrifice could accomplishthat.Sin had separated all humanity from God, and thewages of sin is death.12 So Jesus went to the cross to diefor our sins in order that we may be forgiven. Accordingto the Old Testament Law, there is no forgiveness without17

RESTORED – EX P ERI ENC E LI F E WI T H J ES USthe shedding of blood.13 In dying and shedding His blood,Jesus removed the enmity that existed between God andall humanity. “He [God the Father] made Him [ Jesus]who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we mightbecome the righteousness of God.”14 However, knowingthat our sins are forgiven is not enough.Second, Jesus came not only to die on the cross forour sins, but also to be resurrected in order that we mayhave new eternal, i.e. spiritual, life in Christ. That meansour souls are again in union with God. What Adam andEve lost in the fall was life, and what Jesus came to giveus was life.15 “Jesus is the bread of life.”16 He is “the way,the truth and the life.”17 He is the only path back toGod. “And there is salvation in no one else; for there isno other name under heaven that has been given amongmen by which we must be saved.18 “Jesus is the truth andif you know the truth, the truth will set you free.”19 Jesussaid, “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believesin Me will live
