Simplifying the Deployment of Real-timeBig Data AnalyticsWork in the SAP Co-Innovation Lab with Cisco Unified Computing System and theIntel Distribution for Apache Hadoop Software simplifies big data deploymentsuse case BriefDeveloping a Big Data Solution at SAP’s Co-Innovation LabOctober 2013The SAP Co-innovation Lab is a hive of activity with developers, IT professionals, and business analysts working in concert to define new solutions based ontechnologies from SAP and its technology partners. A recent project broughttogether Cisco and Intel to develop a real-time Big Data analytics solution. Based onthe integration of SAP HANA with the Intel Distribution for Apache Hadoop software (Intel Distribution) running on Cisco Unified Computing System (CiscoUCS ) Common Platform Architecture (CPA) for Big Data, this platform uses inmemory processing to deliver real-time results from the analysis of Big Data.Version 1.0This certified platform is now available in the Co-Innovation Lab for developmentof innovative Big Data applications based on SAP HANA, the Intel Distribution, and Cisco UCS CPA for Big Data. The components work together seamlessly, andthe unified infrastructure makes it simple for IT managers to update the hardware, firmware, and software.ApplicationsSAP Business Objects BIOpen APIs and ProtocolsFederated AccessSAP HANA (In-memory)SAP Data Services (information management)Intel Manager for Apache HadoopSoftwareIntel Distribution for Apache HadoopCisco Unified Computing System

SAP HANA : Real-time Analyticsfor the EnterpriseSAP HANA is SAP’s in-memorydatabase, built for extremetransactional, analytical, and applicationlogic processing in one database. Theheart of SAP HANA is a massivelyparallel processing data store thatmelds row-based, column-based,and object-based storage techniques.SAP has already delivered severalnext-generation, targeted analyticapplications designed specifically toleverage the real-time functionalityoffered by SAP HANA, including SAP Smart Meter Analytics, and SAP CO-PA (Costing-based ProfitabilityAnalysis) Accelerator.SAP is developing additionalanalytics applications related toretail, financial, telecommunications, and other industries. SAP HANA ishighly optimized to interface withthe SAP BusinessObjects reportingand dashboarding portfolio. Its datareplication and integration capabilitiesvastly speed up the process of loadingdata into the database. Because it usesin-memory storage, applications on topof SAP HANA can access data in nearreal-time, for actionable insights.Enterprise customers can now takeadvantage of all their data throughthe integration of SAP HANA with theIntel Distribution. SAP Data Servicessoftware and SAP HANA Smart DataAccess technology enable SAP HANAto work in concert with the IntelDistribution, giving SAP HANA newcapabilities to move data of high valuefrom Hadoop storage into memoryand to federate queries to the IntelDistribution. To business analysts and ITadministrators, the system simply lookslike a large SAP HANA deployment.2SAPHANA SAP Data ServicesSAP HANASmart Data AccessSAP BusinessObjectsBI SuiteIntel Distribution for Apache* Hadoop*Intel Distribution for Apache Hadoop SoftwareIntel Distribution is a softwareplatform that provides distributed dataprocessing and data management forenterprise applications that analyzemassive amounts of diverse data. The work inthe lab resulted in a validated, certifiedsolution of real-time Big Data analyticson Cisco’s UCS infrastructure.Big Data environments can consistof hundreds of servers, resulting inimmense management complexity.Cisco UCS provides a single point ofmanagement for the entire system—for both blade servers supportingenterprise applications and rack serverssupporting Big Data applications. Withthe system’s self-aware, self-integratinginfrastructure, IT departments canproactively monitor the system andreduce operating costs. In the lab, Cisco deployed Cisco UCSC240 servers—two-way platformsbased on the Intel Xeon processorE5 family—for the Hadoop cluster.Intel developers installed the IntelDistribution on these systems.
