Personal InjuryProtectionExplainedMedical. With Excess Medical, Meemic pays secondary after your health insurance provider. WhetherMeemic pays PIP medical claims as Full or Excess iscontrolled by your health care insurance, as manyplans exclude coverage for automobile accidents. It is important to make sure you have the correctPIP medical coverage based on your health careinsurance coverage. Your Meemic agent can help youdetermine the correct coverage for your situation.Rising PIP premiums and assessmentsMeemic Members in Michigan are affected by risingPIP costs in several ways. When you think of auto insurance, most peoplethink about damage to your vehicle. But whatif you or your passengers are injured? In Michigan, if you are injured in an auto accident, your policy provides unlimited, lifetime medicalbenefits, known as Personal Injury Protection (PIP)coverage. This means your policy covers allreasonable and necessary medical care for yourauto accident related injuries.PIP coverage also provides coverage for wage loss(up to three-year maximum), replacement household services that can no longer be performedand benefits to your survivors. Benefit limits areestablished by the Michigan No-Fault Code.PIP coverage may be coordinated between yourauto policy and a medical or health insurancepolicy, this is what Meemic refers to as ExcessFirst, increasing medical costs are continuing toput pressure on the unlimited medical coveragethat all insurance companies in Michigan provide. Those cost increases lead to rate increases on thePIP premiums. Secondly, rising medical costs alsoresult in increases to the assessment from theMichigan Catastrophic Claims Association (MCCA).This statutory assessment is currently at 186 ayear per vehicle. Finally, the threshold at which PIP losses go to theMCCA increases around 3% every few years. Thethreshold is currently at 555,000, meaning Meemicpays the first 555,000 of a claim before the claimgoes to the MCCA. As this threshold increases overtime, the PIP insurance premiums charged byinsurance companies must also increase.Meemic is committed to providing Members withaffordable insurance for educators. We will continueto look for ways to keep expense costs undercontrol and not pay for inflated or fraudulent claims. We can work together to help keep the cost ofMichigan auto insurance under control.GO PAPERLESS TODAY!Going paperless isn’t just better for the environment —it’s better for you, too!Sign up today in our online Account Center at Member.Meemic.Comto get all your important policy documents online instead. 1685 North Opdyke Road, Auburn Hills, Michigan 48326Start a Craft Education MovementMichigan Teacher of the Year Luke Wilcox finds inspiration in surprisingplaces. Here is an excerpt from his blog. To see more and to watch hisaccompanying Ted Talk, visit www.Meemic.com/Blog.The craft beer revolution has taken over theUnited States. No longer are people flockingtowards factory-produced mediocrity. Instead, they are savoring the unique flavors that arebeing batch produced through innovativebrewing processes with interesting ingredients. What can education learn from this whole craftbeer movement?Start by thinking of our students as the productof an intentional brewing process. Currently, weare standardizing curriculum, standardizingteaching practices and standardizing assessments, which looks a lot like the factory model for massproducing beer. The product we are trying toproduce is a standardized, ready-for-college robot. This may have worked well in our world 50 yearsago, but the world has changed. Our world demandsa community of diverse and individualized thinkersin order to solve complex issues. And we needto start cultivating these problem-solvers in ourclassrooms right now using Craft Education. Here are the top 3 strategies:1. Provide students with choice in their learning.2. Develop lesson plans that are interesting andrelevant.3. Use a variety of instructional methods.Using Craft Education, we can create a communityof diverse thinkers who are ready to engage inour global world and find solutions to problemsthat don’t even exist yet. To achieve this diversityof thinking, we must acknowledge and celebratedifferences in our students – and to appreciateeach student’s unique flavor.MeemicSpring 2018
