In 1958 the Department of PublicInstruction authorized the name change toMaui Technical School, denoting an upgrade of vocational education to a technicallevel. In 1964 the Hawai‘i State Legislature enacted the Community College Actestablishing a statewide community collegesystem under the University of Hawai‘i.Maui Technical School was incorporatedinto this system on July 1, 1965, and jurisdiction transferred from the Department ofEducation to the University of Hawai‘i.In 1966 the UH Board of Regents authorized the College to confer the Associate inArts and the Associate in Science degreesand approved the name change to MauiCommunity College, effective July 1, 1966.The first lower division transfer courses followed in September 1967.In February 2010, the UH Board ofRegents approved the name change fromMaui Community College to University ofHawai‘i Maui College to more accuratelyrepresent the college’s programs and servicesthat now include 20 associate and 3 baccalaureate programs.The College is one of seven community colleges in the UH system. It is the only UHcollege that specifically serves the residentsof more than one island. The Fall 2016student population was 3,164 students.The main campus encompasses 78 acresat the Kahului site. Since 1995, 7 buildings have been added: Ka Lama, Ka‘a‘ike,Kaiao, Kūpa‘a, ‘Ike Le‘a, Laulima, andPa‘ina. A private, off-campus apartmentfacility is within a short walking distanceto the Kahului campus, shopping centers,markets, and banks.Accommodating students by using alternative delivery has been a primary value of theCollege. Self-paced classes, begun in 1985,opened up an array of concurrently-taughtcourses and diversified offerings in areaswith a lower population base. Technological advances further opened access tostudents by minimizing their need to bephysically present on the Kahului campus.The first cable course was br

In 1958 the Department of Public Instruction authorized the name change to Maui Technical School, denoting an up-grade of vocational education to a technical level.
