Part I: OverviewWelcomeWelcome to the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) School of Physical Therapy andDoctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program. We are proud to have you as a student in thisprogram. You have made a deliberate decision to further your education at UIW and we areconfident that you will embrace the mission of the School and develop to become leaders in thephysical therapy profession and change agents in the community. We are committed to yoursuccess as you navigate and progress through the high demands of academic and professionalpractice learning.As you have questions, become stressed, or just need someone to speak with, please knowthat faculty, staff, and administrators are here to listen and help as they can. Your success isimportant to us. Our hope is for you to set goals and objectives for yourself to achieve optimalpersonal, academic and professional growth.Purpose of Student HandbookThis student handbook provides you with the policies and procedures specific to the Schoolof Physical Therapy. We expect you to become familiar with the content and keep it as areference. Please note that not all situations can be addressed within the policies of thishandbook. When such situations occur, students are expected to use common sense andreasonable judgment in determining how to handle a situation.The School of Physical Therapy reserves the right to update and amend the studenthandbook as deemed necessary with revisions applicable to all currently enrolled studentsregardless of date of admission or application. The updated version can be found atwww.uiw.edu/physicaltherapy under the Student Life tab. Incarnate Word students areresponsible for knowing the information, policies and procedures outlined in this handbook.Non-Discrimination PolicyThe University of the Incarnate Word complies with all applicable federal and statenondiscrimination la and does not engage in prohibited discrimination on the basis of race, color,nationality or ethnic origin, gender, age or disability in either employment or the provision ofservices. As a Catholic institution of higher education sponsored by the Sisters of Charity of theIncarnate Word, the University of the Incarnate Word is, however, exempt from compliance withsome provisions of certain civil rights laws, including some provisions of Title IX of the EducationAmendments of 1972. The University of the Incarnate Word is exempt from the prohibitionagainst religious discrimination of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. In accordance with 41 CFRChapter 60, it shall not be a violation of the equal opportunity clause required by ExecutiveOrder 11246 for the University of the Incarnate Word to establish a hiring preference forapplicants of the Catholic faith.
