The challenges of the legacy IT stack - cost and complexity - are a resultresult of investments in multiple point solutions such as traditional storage forcapacity, servers for compute power, flash arrays for performance, deduplication appliances to reduce storage, WAN optimization to reduce data sent over thenetwork, data protection tools, and others. Not only is this expensive to purchase,deploy, and manage, but the care and feeding of this infrastructure leaves many ITteams stuck - focused on urgent tasks with little time for initiatives that are strategic to the business.SimpliVity HyperconvergedInfrastructure. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2SimpliVity OmniStackDifferentiation . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4The Data VirtualizationPlatform. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4The OmniStack AcceleratorCard. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4Business Value. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5Summary . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 5Organizations are adopting hyperconverged infrastructure to address these challenges - but not all converged solutions are created equal. Unlike first-generationconverged solutions offering pre-configured “solutions” based on a referencearchitecture, or second-generation solutions that only combined servers, networking, and storage, SimpliVity converges all IT infrastructure and services belowthe hypervisor onto highly efficient and scalable industry-standard servers usingpowerful Intel processors.SimpliVity HyperconvergedInfrastructureSimpliVity’s hyperconverged infrastructure is a scalable, modular, 2U buildingblock of Intel resources that offers all the functionality of traditional IT infrastructure in one device, with a unified administrative interface.SimpliVity assimilates eight to twelve core data center functions including thehypervisor, compute, storage, network switching, backup, replication, cloud gateway, caching, WAN optimization, real-time deduplication, and more. Designed towork with any hypervisor, OS visualization technology, management tool, Intelplatform server, and any cloud provider, SimpliVity provides a single, shared

3Figure 1: Survey data from SimiliVity customers, conducted by Techvalidate3resource pool across the entire IT stack. SimpliVity eliminates point products and inefficient siloed IT architectures, improves IT service agility, and mitigates risk.SimpliVity’s product portfolio covers a wide range of usecases and hyperconvergence market drivers for businessranging from small single site environments to large-scalemulti-site enterprises and the Global 2000. SimpliVityhyperconverged infrastructure is currently delivered on threebest-of-breed servers with Intel CPUs – the OmniCube ,OmniStack Solution with Lenovo* System x3650M5, andOmniStack Solution with Cisco* UCS C240M4. This providescustomers with the flexibility, freedom, and choice of industry-standard servers leveraging powerful Intel processors.SimpliVity OmniStack DifferentiationSimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure, delivered asOmniStack, embodies a dramatic improvement over otherforms of convergence and hyperconvergence. The foundationof SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure is the OmniStack Data Virtualization Platform software and its OmniStackAccelerator Card. The Data Virtualization Platform is SimpliVity’s data architecture, a globally-aware file system with data optimizationtechniques that enables a single, shared, scalable computeand storage resource pool across multiple sites, and provideshighly-efficient data storage, management, and mobility.

4The OmniStack Accelerator Card is a purpose-built PCIecard that offloads OmniStack’s global inline deduplication, compression, and optimization processes to ensure primaryIntel CPU resources are available to serve business applications. As a result, SimpliVity customers see an average of40:1 data efficiency ratios with a dramatic increase in application performance.4The OmniStack Data Virtualization Platform delivers threekey innovations – data efficiency, global unified management, and built-in data protection – while ensuring desired cloudlike economics. Accelerated Data EfficiencyThe data problem is not new, there is not only a datagrowth issue but perhaps more important, a performance/IO issue. The one-to-one relationship between a physicalserver and storage shifts to a many-to-one relationshipbetween virtual machines and a single storage controller.Multiplexing the different IO streams of multiple workloads by the hypervisor creates random IO streams thatmust compete for resources. This increases IOPS requiredto service the virtual workloads. To address performanceissues, more disk spindles can be added. However, this alsoincreases capacity. This over-provisioning leads to a highercost per gigabyte of storage allocated to every virtualmachine.SimpliVity and Intel address the data problem with Accelerated Data Efficiency. SimpliVity performs inline datadeduplication, compression, and optimization on all dataat inception, across all phases of the data lifecycle, allhandled with fine granularity of just 4KB-8KB. This dramatically reducing required storage capacity and networkbandwidth while accelerating performance. SimpliVity’sdata efficiency functions result in less data being transferred and stored, and eliminates redundant reads/writes,improving performance. As a result, on average, SimpliVity customers’ storage is 40 times more efficient with anincrease in application performance.SimpliVity is optimized to take advantage of Intel’s x86architecture, SimpliVity’s deep technological foundation allows the core Intel CPU to be reserved for the highperformance of business applications as SimpliVity’saccelerated data efficiency functions are offloading ontoSimpliVity’s own PCIe card. This ensures that the powerof Intel is being leveraged for the most critical needs –running business applications. Global Unified ManagementVirtual machines are portable. However, virtual machinesare tied to the datastore in the virtualization domain, whichis tied to siloed physical storage. This can limit the mobil-ity of the virtual machine. To complicate matters further, instead of managing from a virtual machine point of view,IT is managing the virtualized workload’s storage from thepoint of view of the storage system: LUNs (or NFS mounts),volumes, RAID groups (or aggregates) and physical disks.SimpliVity’s breakthrough is aligning the data to the virtualmachine, globally. Locking data into its underlying hardware infrastructure is now a thing of the past. Now, data isjust as mobile as the virtual machine itself. This is the trueessence of Software-Defined Data Center.SimpliVity’s VM-centric approach to management eliminates manually intensive, error-prone administrative tasks. Built-in Data ProtectionSimpliVity’s hyperconverged infrastructure includes builtin data protection functionality, enabling business continuity and disaster recovery for critical applications and data, while eliminating the need for special-purpose backup andrecovery products. SimpliVity’s inherent data efficienciesminimize disk I/O and WAN traffic, reducing backup andrestore windows from hours to minutes. This eliminatesthe need for complex and costly add-on backup softwareand hardware. Back ups can be done locally or stored at aremote site—including the public cloud.Business Value Agility: SimpliVity offers scale-on-demand infrastructureconsisting of a unified stack running on an Intel sharedresource pool. By establishing scalable test/dev. andproduction environments quickly and easily, and rapidlyprovisioning and deploying applications, IT can reducecycle time and get to market faster. Minimize Risk: SimpliVity’s hyperconverged infrastructureincludes native data protection that eliminates the needfor traditional backup software and hardware, and enablesdisaster recovery. Backup policies and operations occur atthe VM-level, allowing protection strategies to be customized for each workload. Native deduplication, compressionand optimization of production data before it is first written to disk create capacity, bandwidth and performanceefficiencies that are carried through to backup and replication operations. Improve Operational Efficiency: With operationalcosts more often contributing to the lion’s share of an ITexpenses, the savings impact of SimpliVity hyperconvergedinfrastructure can be significant. SimpliVity automatesand streamlines operations to reduce manual processes, and optimizes floor space, power, cooling, bandwidth, andother fixed costs. It helps break down infrastructure silos, reducing interoperability issues. SimpliVity also reducesthe need for specialized training.

Reduce Capital Expenses: SimpliVity hyperconvergedinfrastructure reduces the number of discrete components required to deliver data center services, dramaticallycutting costs. It optimizes storage capacity, network bandwidth, and IO to create additional capital and operationalexpense savings. SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructurealso reduces the labor-intensive activities associated withdeploying and maintaining infrastructure supporting virtualized applications. SimpliVity helps IT leaders make theshift from reactive management to innovating.
